Scientists Have Detected a Crack in Earths Magnetic Shield

Earth is such a habitable place, thanks in no small part to the vast magnetic field that surrounds our planet, shielding us from harsh solar winds and cosmic radiation.

Cracks were first discovered in 1979.

"...these cracks don't expose Earth's surface to the solar wind. Our atmosphere protects us, even when our magnetic field doesn't. The effects of solar storms are felt mainly in the high upper atmosphere and the region of space around Earth where satellites orbit."

Scary and there's not a whole lot we can do about this. Thanks Sheryl.

""[This] indicates a transient weakening of Earth’s magnetic shield, and may hold clues for a better understanding of future superstorms that could cripple modern technological infrastructure on Earth, and endanger the lives of the astronauts in space."

So the good news is our magnetosphere was only temporarily cracked, but the bad news is that it can be cracked at all."

We Humans really Mucked it all up PERIOD!!! Can't return to the 1950's sadly!

It remains to be seen how serious this is, or whether this fissure is already responsible for some of the Earth's extreme climate conditions.

Very interesting, thank you! About this crack we can't do much but we can work for climate change!

Did anyone watch " Before the Flood " climate change documentary last week ? It is still on the National Geographic channel. Our atmosphere used to be tall and healthy. Now it looks like a contact lens. Not much left. Leonardo DiCaprio directed it and his father is with him. Lovely and very scary documentary.

Thanks for the heads up, Trish. I'll have to watch "Before the Flood". I have heard of it, but didn't know when it was coming out.

Thank you for that additional clarifying information, Animae. Maybe this isn't as much of a menace as it seems.

Thanks for posting, Dandelion. This knowledge is helpful, and the more we can find out, the better.

I'm not so sure that this is entirely human-caused. From what I read, the magnetic field has been weakening for some time, and it could indicate another pole flip. Not much we can do about that, except prepare.

Noted. Thanks for posting, Dandelion.

Well, they've had over a year to study it and come to these conclusions. Funny, how this is the first I've heard about it (that I recall). So, I guess we will all stay in the dark until the next time something like this happens; and if we're lucky we'll hear all about it months or years later.
This is the kind of news and information I want on the networks and cable channels----rather than spending all their time ruminating about Clinton-Trump and dissecting gossip.

It was detected years ago and I believe they don't know if it's recent or been there forever.

All things in nature have a way of repairing itself to
prevent it's destruction like these cracks in the magnetic
shield. But, when mankind interferes with nature's healing
process as in the case of the ozone destruction and farm
irrigation causing black holes, nature can not be expected
to mend and recover. We have only our selves to blame.
Thank you Dee for posting.

Trish, I watched 'Before the Flood' a few weeks ago. It was still free to view then. It is a powerful documentary about the realities of climate change. Thanks so much for recommending it, Dandelion

I wish I had caught it, I placed a link on that was working but didn't get a chance to view it before it was shut down. I'm glad he made the film from what I could see via the trailer.
