Life in the Gig Economy or The Economics of Desperation

The newest tool of exploitation is weaponized desperation. For the belief that they will one day rise to the ruling class, workers shed their rights to health, happiness, and dignity. The gig economy is nothing more than a farce which exploits workers

The gig economy dangles a false promise in front of the desperate and lures them into even greater desperation.

And it works for exactly the reason Steinbeck pointed out - US culture pushes identification with the millionaires, not with the "masses" who have more in common ...

And that identification is totally destructive for most people ...
Because it is insidious, plants the idea that one's a failure if one DOESN'T make it big 'in the land of opportunity' ... and who wants to identify with 'other failures'???
And who wants to 'subsidize' those 'lazy failures' (with which one DOESN'T identify) ???

Of course - one knows that the labels don't apply to the people one knows ...

Luckily - there are people out there fighting this institutionalised mindset. People whose deepest traditions run directly against such a mindset (e.g. many Native Americans ... but also others whose local religious communities haven't been overrun by corporate capitalism)

And Bernie did a great job of shaking the tree during his campaign, making people stop & question ...

Depends on the ethics, morality, compassion and, if any, conscience of the person with riches/wealth.

And Bernie is still shaking the tree. His last town hall meeting speaking about Universal Health care was watch online by over a million viewers. He also had on stage someone from Norway and Canada to debunk that if we had universal health our wait times would be long. These scare tactics have worked well over here and for those who do not have any medical insurance they wait forever - many die due to it.

Great Steinbeck quote! But the grapes of wrath cut deeper... Many people go back to their family roots in which or generations they have heard the rich will somehow come at the top and the struggles to turn around will prove futile because historically it has been so. Not all true but not completely false either. That part of fatalism which is not religious must be dealt with showing how some things have changed for the better and why if they haven't persisted in righting wrongs there are instances where specific decisions were taken which were mistakes. Chile's coup in 1973 might be a case in point. Allende named Pinochet to a high profile army position even though he was advised to the contrary. And so the history goes...
