Born of the fear-mongering, myth-proliferating, "beyond specious," "affront to democracy" North Carolina bill that seeks to target transgender people for something they've never done, bathroom hysteria is spreading across our unhinged land. This is not the first time: Many historical reckonings find that "bathroom panic is long the hill that racists and sexists are willing to die on," from the 19th century Ladies Sanitary Association's advocacy for women's restrooms to "help a class who naturally find it difficult to ask for public consideration in this matter, while experiencing grievous suffering," to the civil rights era's Jim Crow laws governing bathrooms and water fountains, to the longtime myth peddled by bigots that sexual predators will exploit non-discrimination laws to sneak into women's restrooms so to keep our blessed children safe we better just keep discriminating against the transgender community, not that they're icky or anything.

A bill that tells people where they can or can't piss - North Carolina's bars people from using public restrooms that don't align with the sex on their birth certificates - manages to be both offensive in substantive ways, and ridiculous. Transgender people have long said bathroom access represents a serious issue for them, and they've reported being regularly harassed, assaulted and humiliated. Today, unsurprisingly given what's been going on, a trans woman was confronted by a security guard at a D.C. grocery store bathroom, insulted and bodily thrown out of the store; the guard has been charged with assault, and may face hate crime charges.

That's the serious stuff. Then there's the demented stuff. Wingnuts are boycotting Target - which fares well on a Corporate Equality Index - for letting people use whatever damn bathroom they want to use; in a viral video last week, some madwoman trailed by her 12 kids marched through Target's housewares shrieking about the devil raping children. That Ablow moron also went on Fox News to ramble about how transgender bathrooms mark the unravelling of our society and the species, and if a trans person can decide his/her identity maybe a tattooed person will decide he's black...What the? Meanwhile one legislator has introduced his own bill to "protect" students from Obama's "social experiment," GOP-ese for "progress"; police - aka the thin blue line of "bathroom-enforcement cadets" - cheerfully admit they haven't a clue how they might enforce the law and they don't really think they need it and besides who brings a birth certificate to the john; and social media is ablaze with hashtags - #OccuPotty and #WeJustNeedToPee - and memes: "I use the men's room because I identify with a shorter line."

Finally, many commentators have noted that while virtually no transgender people have been found to have committed sex crimes in public bathrooms, at least three conservative GOP lawmakers - Former Senator Larry Craig, Former Florida Representative Bob Allen, and Former Senator Jon Hinson - and, depending on your source, possibly many more have been found guilty of the same offense. Entirely logically, then, one Jeremy Belanger has started a petition urging that we protect ourselves and our children by making GOP pols, invariably masquerading as "people who are morally just," use separate bathrooms. The new law would forbid them from joining the rest of us in our private business, set up "Grand Old Potty" spaces for them, and eliminate any stalls or dividers "so they can continue to monitor the bathroom activities they're so interested in." Toilet paper optional.

From another article:
In a new video, comedian and LGBT ally Jeremy Belanger takes aim at the anti-LGBT measures popping up around the country.

In his two-minute video called "Why Republican Politicians Should Use a Separate Bathroom," Belanger calls out the absurdity of laws and bills that prevent transgender people from using public bathrooms that align with their gender identity. Supporters of such measures, including GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz, claim they protect children from child molesters and sex offenders.

But Belanger has a unique idea:
"There's a group of people that have actually committed sex crimes in public restrooms: Republican politicians," the comedian said. "The people that are railing against sex acts in bathrooms the most are more likely to do it, kind of like a more hateful 'he who smelt it dealt it.'"

Belanger even launched a petition called "Force Republican Politicians to Use a Separate Bathroom." In his petition, he writes that his "Grand Old Potty" measure would ban Republicans to use special public bathrooms.
"This would be create the Grand Old Potty, a restroom set aside for the conservative lawmakers. Republican Politicians would only be allowed to use the bathroom that corresponds to their voter registration," he writes. "Should they chose to use another restroom they would have to complete the necessary paperwork of changing their party affiliation."

...the first thing to realize is the GOP is Not about truth telling, but rather Power, Control, Self-Enrichment and keeping it that way- once you understand that, it all makes sense.

Here is the WORDING of the PETITION - yes, it is a REAL one!!!!! READ AND SIGN!!!!!!!!

We must protect ourselves from a group with multiple sex offenders by forcing them use a separate bathroom. That group is Republican politicians.

The Grand Old Party has had several politicians that have committed sex crimes in public restrooms including Former Senator Larry Craig, Former Florida Representative Bob Allen, and Former Senator Jon Hinson. This group is a known threat to citizens' safety and security.

In North Carolina transgendered people have been denied access bathrooms that they identify with, though there has been no evidence of a trans person committing a sex crime. However, the group that has proven itself to be dangerous continues to pose a threat in public restrooms.

To prevent conservative politicians from dressing as people who are morally just only to expose themselves and their bias to the innocent public, we ask they use a separate restroom.

This would be create the Grand Old Potty, a restroom set aside for the conservative lawmakers. Republican Politicians would only be allowed to use the bathroom that corresponds to their voter registration. Should they chose to use another restroom they would have to complete the necessary paperwork of changing their party affiliation.

We are calling for the following points of action:

Congress pass a law forbidding republican politicians from using the same restrooms as the rest of the public.
Set up Grand Old Potty spaces for the GOP at public restrooms.
Ensure there are no separate stalls or dividers in the Grand Old Potty so they can continue to monitor the bathroom activities they are so interested in.
Ensure this Federal law supersedes any state or local laws that may adopt a more tolerant policy toward the group.

This petition will be delivered to:

U.S. House of Representatives
U.S. Senate
President Barack Obama

Barbara Tomlinson (431)

Okay, I was BOTH "right" and "wrong" with regard to Senator Strom Thurmond!
Here's from Wikipedia:
"Thurmond switched parties because of his opposition to the 1964 Civil Rights Act (which was supported by 63% of Democrats in the House and 69% of Democrats in the Senate, versus 80% of House Republicans and 82% in the Senate), disaffection with the liberalism of the national party, and his support for the conservatism of the Republican presidential candidate Senator Barry Goldwater."
He was FIRST a Democrat, and THEN a Rethuglican!

By the way, that Info on the PERVERTS was dug up, or at least passed on, by some guy from Austin, Texas, posting ON THE COMMENTS TO THE PETITION. Good for him! A Good REMINDER to us all.....

All this hoo-hah about Trans people, by the way, is MERELY A DISTRACTION, a Ploy by the Rethuglicans, to GET OUR ATTENTION AWAY FROM THE REAL ISSUES.
Dems, Rethugs, Independents, even RELIGIOUS PEOPLE, are MORE AND MORE CONVINCED.... but the Rethugs DON'T BUDGE AN INCH. They're COMMITTED to that stance.
"Bread and circuses", this is the Circus part, just like the Roman "circuses" THEY DON'T CARE IF PEOPLE GET HURT AND DIE... it's all to DISTRACT the Mob, that might call for THEIR blood if the Distractions weren't happening.... Decline and Fall.....

The pic, by the way, is from 1958 Virginia, when it was "controversial" for Black and White girls [or people!] to use the SAME BATHROOMS....!
That reminds me, I am 80 years of age, so I remember those times well.... and I remember an obviously Black guy, who used to ride the buses a lot, who always wore a Turban and some dabs of face paint to "pass" as being a Hindu from INDIA, so he wouldn't be subject to discrimination for being "Black".... I just thot of that, hadn't remembered it for a long time!

OK i have a thread started about The AFA .. These are the people pushing all the crap about the bathrooms ... here is the links ...
American Family Association] are certainly among the most powerful groups on the American religious right. They are also among the chief purveyors of lies about LGBT people. They have both regularly pumped out propaganda asserting that gay men molest children at far higher rates than their heterosexual counterparts — a claim that has been debunked by virtually all the recognized scientific authorities in the field ..

Good point, Rob P. BMutiny, thanks for finding and listing those crimes that Rethuglicans have committed. What hypocrisy!

I am in Asheville right now, and have already talked with people about the bathroom law - and made a couple jokes. "I was born female, I identify as female!" Quite a few businesses have gender-neutral bathrooms anyway.

This I posted previously on a different thread:

When Christine Jorgenson, the first or at least the first NOTORIOUS person to have a sex-change operation, "came out" as a Woman, ABSOLUTELY NOBODY asked her or made an issue of, which Restroom she should use!
NATURALLY, and OBVIOUSLY, she used the WOMEN'S RESTROOM, and nobody thot twice about it!!!!!
Going into a Men's Restroom, with her high heels, makeup, women's hairdo, skirts and jewelry, now THAT would have been a Scandal!!! And, possibly gotten her beaten up....

I got NEWS for some people! TRANSGENDER FOLKS OF ALL AGES, HAVE BEEN IN OUR MIDST, FOR DECADES. You probably in some Department Store or Public Place, HAVE BEEN SHARING RESTROOMS WITH TRANSGENDERS OF YOUR SEX, ALL ALONG! Without knowing it!!! and, of course, with NO problems AT ALL.....
There has not, in ALL HISTORY, been ONE SINGLE INSTANCE of a Rape by a Transgender person in a Public or School restroom.... NOT ONE SINGLE ONE.
This is a MADE-UP ISSUE by Rethuglicans and the Religious Right. To DRAW ATTENTION AWAY FROM their hideous Agenda for the People of the United States, increasing the Tyranny and the Wealth of the Rich, screwing the Poor....
It is a MADE-UP ISSUE, because they LOST on the non-issue of Gay Marriage. They will LOSE on this one, too - but, in the meantime, just like the non-issue they squawked so long about on Gay Marriage, it serves as a DISTRACTION away from REAL VITAL ISSUES during an Election Year...!!!

A Trans man or woman, boy or girl, going into the Restroom INAPPROPRIATE FOR THEIR SEX, runs the risk of GETTING BEATEN UP. Often, SEVERELY BEATEN UP. Especially a Female Trans in a Male Restroom - some men are so VERY INSECURE about their Gender Identity, their "Manliness"!

Over 22,000 Signatures on this Care2 Petition so far!
WELL DONE, Care2!!!

About This Petition
Target has always been inclusive of the LGBT community. Recently, they publicly affirmed their stance on inclusivity, inciting ire among many who are opposed to transgender individuals using the restroom that aligns with their gender identity.
A petition AGAINST Target has since started to make the rounds, providing support to discrimination, HATE, and bigotry. (This "Pledge to Boycott" already has over 295,000 signatures.)

I created this pledge to show Target how much we appreciate them and support their stance! We need to show that the supporters OUTNUMBER those who wish to discriminate.
Sign and SHARE to show your solidarity!

On April 19, 2016, Target made the following statement:
"Recent debate around proposed laws in several states has reignited a national conversation around inclusivity. So earlier this week, we reiterated with our team members where Target stands and how our beliefs are brought to life in how we serve our guests.
"Inclusivity is a core belief at Target. It’s something we celebrate. We stand for equality and equity, and strive to make our guests and team members feel accepted, respected and welcomed in our stores and workplaces every day.
"We believe that everyone—every team member, every guest, and every community—deserves to be protected from discrimination, and treated equally. Consistent with this belief, Target supports the federal Equality Act, which provides protections to LGBT individuals, and opposes action that enables discrimination.
"In our stores, we demonstrate our commitment to an inclusive experience in many ways. Most relevant for the conversations currently underway, we welcome transgender team members and guests to use the restroom or fitting room facility that corresponds with their gender identity.
"We regularly assess issues and consider many factors such as impact to our business, guests and team members. Given the specific questions these legislative proposals raised about how we manage our fitting rooms and restrooms, we felt it was important to state our position.

"Everyone deserves to feel like they belong. And you’ll always be accepted, respected and welcomed at Target."
See above for the Link to the ORIGINAL Petition on this thread, the one. [That doesn't even have 200 Signatures yet!]

The Republican Party has gone from sad to darn right stupid and scarey. I'd like for you to get with the times, stop kissing the Corporate butt, and actually work at making this Nation work for ALL of us not just some of us. Think that can be fit into your day between kissing your mega donors butts so you can keep your job and ruining our Country? That was my comment on the SIGNED Petition. They make mountains out of molehills. While Rome burns this is what they want to spend their time on.
