Sigh. The human is so intelligent it can make many wonderful things with technology but also does the flip side. I'm not sure why we must always go to that dark side but now we have things coming on worse than nuclear war. I"m glad I'm getting old, but I hate to think what my children and grandchildren will encounter. Very sad really.

There are no winners in war, unless you lower yourself to that level of human existence.

We certainly don't need more weapons and in this day and age there should be more understanding to what causes nations to fight

I share Dandelion's feelings. What I've seen over the last 6 decades has been scary.

What will our children and grandchildren have to face because we have not managed stop the arms race and we keep electing politicians who do what the arm merchants want?

Let's be real honest. The human species is capable of great things. It is also for the most part still not that far removed from the trees.
What is it that most people glorify over every other thing? We glorify the mighty warrior; needless violence and crass materialism. Someone once asked me what I thought the beast in Revelation was. My answer was that it is a system operated by men. The number 6 is the number of man. What do we humans for the most part desire? We desire the instant titillation of sensual pleasures and creature comforts.
We overproduce; over-consume and overpopulate. We desire money, sex and power or 666. We remain unawakened. Or as Morpheus from the Matrix would say, do you want the red pill or the blue pill?

Most of the latest techno comforts that we have enjoyed since the industrial revolution have been the by-products of war and other forms of armed conflict. Many profit from war and the wealthy of today are no different. They profit from arming both sides and playing them against the middle. Continuous conflicts on a global scale creates enormous profits for the 10%; removes unwanted indigenous population and eventually by electing puppet governments employing austerity economics allows them to create wage class slaves and control of said country's resources. That too is warfare at which we're quite good at. Strategy; policies; procedures in war are the parents of future technological developments. It also creates an army motivated by economic necessity; patriotism or religious fervour that they can use to solidify their hold on global resources in the name of defending said Nation's national security. The truth of the matter is that the only security that matters is the interests of the multinational corporations seeking 100% global control. Every once in a while they throw us a technological bone.
Laser optics for example is a great development in many venues that does benefit us yet laser weaponry is supposed to be banned. The US Navy has developed a naval laser that can be fired from the deck of a moving ship. The US Army has developed microwave weaponry that can disperse a crowd or fry them on the spot. Who knows what the Russians and the PRC have developed.
No weapons in space; think again. There are already hunter/seeker satellites in orbit. Psy weapons used to control the masses? Not so far fetched when you think about the development and deployment of ULF and ELF type waves. There is so much going on and being developed in those black ops think tanks that we the people don't know anything about.
There are holdovers from the Nazi era in deep containment vaults such as race specific viruses that would eradicate specific demography from the world. Care to guess what happens when the Muslims have served the Elites' purpose?
Or how about a global network that can control and regulate weather among other things? HAARP is already here and established globally. It was originally developed by the oil industry and sold to the US military who have been messing about in the ionosphere and with several other applications of HAARP. You can and some of you will call this conspiracy and brand me as another nut. Unlike them I follow the profit trail. I ask who profited; how they profited and why. The profit trail usually explains motive. Untriangulated theories are nothing more than theories and have no validity. Who, What, Where, When, Why and How are the questions we need to ask.

I think that intelligent men like Musk and Hawking have a good right to be trepid. Consider the Elites' statements since 1997 at the UN conference where they stated 85-90% global population by any means necessary as of 2025 with 0% population growth thereafter. They want a managed population that will eventually die out. They have stated infrequently that they intend to deposit or upload their collective consciousness into a vast quantum computer system. They have also stated that they will provide AI bodies for themselves if and when they want to visit the planet and manage any problems. I'm not making this up. It is their words not mine.
They think they are gods and intend to become gods and don't get in their way. They create think tanks and foundations that although superficially state their intent is humanitarian and the sleeping masses believe them are nothing more than another way to balance their evil deeds while profiting off you the people.
Roddenberry had this AI concept with his Borg in STNG and I wonder where he got that idea from? The AI theme has been around since Philip K. Dick's time. Read "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" [1968]. Of course there's also the movie Metropolis produced by Fritz Lang in 1927. It plays into Nietzsche's god man in Spracht Zarathustra. Then there's James Cameron's Terminator with Sky Net and the age of machines.
All that being said I think it illustrates to a degree that technology can produce beneficial things but it is the intent of the person/s who develops; deploys and profits from technology that determines its axiom. If that intent is to become a god at all cost even to the extent of genocide and terracide then we the people are in deep ykw.
If there is intelligent life out there it is certainly wise enough to maintain its occulted presence and to inter mankind in its backwater solar crib. Then again.....

In the film I Robot; a Hollywood adaption of an Isaac Asimov novel robots or AIs have three laws programmed into them. One of those is the prohibition against hurting humans. Of course VIKI (Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence) realizes that humans intend to eradicate all AI. It takes steps by eradicating Dr. Lanning its creator; by reprogramming the AI which leads to war between machine and human.

The similarities between Cameron's Sky Net in the Terminator movies parallels this concept. It is indeed what Hawking, Musk and others are afraid of today: an intelligent; reasoning and utterly ruthless AI system capable of eradicating the human species it sees as a threat to itself.

Would that AI system care about the environment or would it only care about incorporating resources and people into its system such as the Borg do?

Then there's the movie Demon Seed. Demon Seed is a 1977 American science fiction–horror film starring Julie Christie and directed by Donald Cammell. The film was based on the novel of the same name by Dean Koontz. It concerns the imprisonment and forced impregnation of a woman by an artificially intelligent computer. One of the interesting things in the book is the care that Proteus IV expresses for the environment.

In the Dick Book "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" the question is raised, do androids have the capacity to understand and employ empathy?

One of the things I've noticed is the push in today's media to become transhuman. That raises the question, Where Is Humanity Going? Are we to divest ourselves of our corporeal bodies and adopt a cyborg one? Would that enslave us in a hive mentality like the Borg; at the whim of a central controlling entity?

The question that people like Hawking and Musk pose is that they don't think that AI technology does have the capacity for empathy or the care for the environment. Perhaps it also encompasses our intent toward our creation.

We do not need any weapons. All we need is love (The Beatles).

As long as there is one angry, out of control head of state, there will be weapons and they will be used. Reality is we are frightened and we have reason to be. ISIS, Netanyahu, and others of that ilk keep us armed to the teeth, and nothing will change that. Humanity is very inhumane.

I agree with the sentiment of the panel,
"War is hell" - G. Patton
I also agree with the Scientific community
to ban all AI weapons. No good can come
out of it.
Thank you Darren for posting

I recently read an opinion on Quora suggesting that AI will become the biggest issue in human survival in the very near future. Seems it may becoming sooner than later.
