The suppression of the Native Americans and the decimation of their culture is a black page in the history of the United States.

That was an interesting article. I am part Cherokee, through my dad. I find the historical facts regarding Indigenous Americans to be fascinating reading.

I still feel American Natives originated in Asia, over thousands of years their DNA would have altered, & some still shows DNA from the Bering Straights area.

The discrimination and injustices towards this ancient race, which had lived on the American continent long before the European conquerors came to this land.

Our stories go way back, our ancestors lived here among nature in a good way, a lot of what was told by the native population is now just being verified through science labs but native people always knew these things. It was also foretold of the day to come that we are seeing played out today if the ways of the non Indian did not correct themselves.

Yes, Dandelion. Before the time of the ancient pyramids of Egypt, the Indigenous Americans knew in their old souls and spirits what has been and is now being presented as new discoveries. Trusting upon their inner awareness and enlightened spirits, they should always have been man's inspiration as to how to live with our Earth Mother, as true human beings and should always have been honored, respected, revered, emulated.

At the least, should have been allowed to walk their path, unmolested, free. The opposite has been their experience and there are but a few of these pure souls among us now. There are many who have some of the blood in their veins, but it is rare to find those who have remained within their tribe and rarer still to have retained the knowledge, lore, arts, original teachings of their culture.

Thanks Darren for honoring this with your post. They have been suppressed, oppressed, nearly to a genocidal obliteration. Something of a spiritual magic swirls about Earth and seems to preserve the echoes of the past and lay a path for their return in the future.

People have been in North America for more than 30 thousand years. My family stories came first and prove the DNA test was correct.

Thanks Darren and Thanks Sheryl for your comment. The heritage of the Native Americans should be taught in our schools as part of the History of America. I know it wasn't when I was in school but it certainly should have been part of the curriculum.

The history and culture of the Native Americans is fascinating.

I'm not ashamed to admit I was completely ignorant of it. Like most people I grew up on a diet of Western films were 'Indians' were portrayed, in a totally racist manner, as brute savages.
When you discover the truth you realise it was the white man who was the 'savage' and the despoiler.

Intrigued to learn of the 'three sisters' and Native Americans marvellous accomplishments in agriculture.

Their 'reverence for nature', whilst not in the Schweitzer mode I subscribe to, holds a lesson for us all.

Supposedly, these native Americans came over from Asia through Alaska some 14,000 years ago. When I hiked in Himalayas or spent time with Tibetan monks, I had seen many people who look like endogenous native Americans...

Well then. The current American practice, where to qualify as native American you must be a registered member of a tribe (and the tribe must be a recognized tribe) desperately needs overhaul. Certainly tribes should continue to keep their own rolls and government, but anyone who can should be allowed to qualify as native American through gene testing without regard to tribe, and should be able to receive the benefits (skimpy though they are, there are some) from the Federal Government of being so classified.

Curious and amusing how Americans of New Format (since the phony Declaration of Independence, after genocide OF the Native Americans), can invent a system of discrimination, then force everyone else into complying with it.

Like a teenager discovering sex for the first time, THEN forcing all adults older than himself to comply with a stupid regulation he dreams up in his adolescent imagination.

Always interesting articles and comments in care2. All types of human tribes ,..native north and south american, Germanic, Arabic, etc......have been fighting for land and resources for centuries. Only cure for this is for all of us on this planet to realize the terrible past through education, stop the hate of each other and the greed that seems to be in all our DNA and start looking after each other, this planet and this universe. I send my love to all of you

It might have escaped Nyack's hysterical ranting attention, that I am aware of England's abysmal history with regards to territorial bloodshed (Scotland), as well as other countries (India, where their brutal Caste System is as destructive and evil as OUR very own Class System), and that I wasn't in any way, shape or form in favor of BREXIT, given I bear no malice, like some Englanders do, about overseas people.

Americans of New Format today who blindly and arrogantly celebrate the Declaration of Independence in effect, wipe their grubby little hands of the genocide committed against the Indigenous Native Americans.

So, if you Americans are REALLY UNLUCKY, you'll get a failed businessman (several bankruptcies to his credit), with racist, fascist, and xenophobia running through his veins of Scottish and German parentage.

If you simply vote for Clinton, you'll get a woman who has taken part and sanctioned atrocities in countries, and MURDERED ANIMALS in the process.

Your choice.

I don't see that the conclusion is all that surprising. I wonder just how large a group of Asians migrated here, and if it was a large enough population to limit inbreeding.
