This is all too common in families who don't see any other revenue options. Read Half the Sky by Nicholas Kristof. Very sad.

The mother should have prostituted herself instead of forcing her daughter...

Abbe, that us too true. Economic conditions are getting worse for people all over the world and this is a direct result of it. How many babies are sold into slavery every day?

Too many families see daughters as exploitabel commodities in a variety of cultures. This is a crushing story; I can only hope the victim is protected, the mother prosecuted.

How could all the money in the world enable that "mother" to look at herself in the mirror? Poverty is no excuse.

Noted, and thanks, Anna, for the article. sorry Patty, no green star this time. As has been said, this is all to common an occurrence... especially in the poorer countries of the world. I'm glad this girl had the guts to speak out, because most of them suffer silently, I'm also glad to see India's laws changing and children being protected... especially girls. The mother and the beauty shop owner need to be punished severely for the damage they have caused this child.

Can't you find anything better to do than sitting around dishing out bad news every day?

Unfortunately 80 % prostitution is going on by force throughout the world and 20 % due to poverty and illiteracy and no any Government in any country try to stop those people who are doing this criminal act openly which is sad, however Anna thanks for sharing here for awareness.

There is no excuse for this mothers actions for abusing her child this way if she needed money she should have done the act herself, I hope that there is a severe penalty and this is going on everywhere in the world and should be stopped.

I feel terrible for that poor girl. I hope she gets the love and care that the mother never gave her and that she will be healed with proper guidence and therapy. the mother should be put in jail and sterilized.. shame on her! she should never be allowed to have any more children!

Is this the little girl that there was a story about recently whose mother told her that she could not continue at school even though she was very bright. The idea was to send her back to her grandfather presumably because he lived off their earnings.

It is a common and sad story in India, I hope this little girl is helped to a new life.

This is truly a sad story. Unfortunately, it isn't only in India or another less-developed country. I used to work in a residential treatment center here in the US and had 2 patients that their mothers sold them as young as 4 and 5 to men for drugs. This happened for several years until they were taken from the mothers. I think we also have to look at how horrible the men are that abuse children like this.

Some people should be sterilized, point in case! Sad that every day we euthanize perfectly innocent, sweet animals and yet let human GARBAGE like this walk the earth.

Indian Govt. is obessed with high growth rates. no effort is made to improve socio-economic status of economically lower strata of population.India is country for few first world classes of people(Industralist, business families, top bureacrats),who benefits from govt. policies.for which they bribe the politicians with everything. the rest is living life of acute poverty and financial disabality.
