The Humane Society of the United States is the nation's largest and most powerful animal protection organization. Since 1954 we’ve been fighting to reduce their suffering, and eliminate cruelty and abuse. We celebrate the wonderful bond between humans and animals, and assist when disasters strike.
Our major campaigns are factory farming, animal fighting & cruelty, the fur trade, and inhumane sport hunting practices. We also work on other issues such as puppy mills, the Canadian seal hunt, greyhound racing, private ownership of exotic animals, and animals in research and testing.
This Care2 group is for supporters and friends of the HSUS. Welcome! Please feel free to participate in the discussions or start one of your own. We're here to talk about all things related to the welfare of our furry friends and how we can make the world a better place for them.
Please help the dogs of "SOSCoky" - the Canile of Santa Maria di Castellabate, Campania, Italy - in signing our petition. The area of the Canile is placed at a former rubbish-ground without infrastructure. There is no electricity and water. Many of the dogs are sick - suffering of Leishmaniose, Ehrlichose or other diseases. Already five years ago the municipials have promised a new area for the Canile, but 'till now nothing has happened. It is time for keeping promises now!! Join our petition please! Thank you!!
Please read and note...distribute widely. Thank You! BIG Hugs

ANOTHER STORY!!!! Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog Calypso, decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly. Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the companies web site, this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs.
Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is true that studies have shown that 50% of th e dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'
True information about the mulch can be found here - http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoa.htm This site gives the following information: Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theo bromine'.
It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. J ust a word of caution check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens.
Theo bromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs.
Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

at the moment we are trying to help a dog in Bangkok (Dany). He lives in the street in the Klong San area, the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok. The picture was taken by a student in Bangkok (Dan).
I have been in contact with him and he is trying to help as much as possible. Dan the photographer has no idea how to deal with animals, and he has no way of taking the dog with him. But he has promised via mail to go back to Dany immediately, to check up on her and bring her food with the hopes, that she will make it until we have found a solution to save her.
There is a dog rescue center in Bangkok, which I have mailed to but not received an answer yet.
Maybe someone from Bangkok will be able to help, someone who has experience with animals?
Possibly this person would have to go to the Bangkok rescue center personally to ask for help.
We will get a sponsor for Dany so the rescue center will not have any costs with him.
Another possibilty would be for an animal lover in Bangkok to collect the dog and brings or ships her to the rescue center in Koh Samui for medical attention.
If anyone happens to be in Bangkok at this moment, please write to me. Dan will explain to you exactly how to find Dany.
If you have other suggestions for help, please get in contact with me.
Subject: 4-10 month old Amer Bulldog mixes to be PTS next week @ OCAS-owner sent to IRAQ~
THis is horrible.....5 puppies, only one of which has since received an application, were placed at OCAS in Orlando kill shelter when their owner was shipped out to SERVE OUR COUNTRY in IRAQ!! I don't know why he didn't place them at the local SPCA but the fact is they're there, he's in IRAQ and they WILL BE PTS next week!
When I first inquired on this pack of 5 I was told they were rather timid and not too social due to being scared....so I knew why they weren't getting applications! Then yesterday I got emailed by Debra, David and Kat at OCAS asking for my help in getting these "SWEET" puppies a home or rescue! They have in this short time at the shelter really come around and are super loving and cuddly....proof they were meant to be kept alive! They want to know love and life..but they need your help and fast! Kat (staff at OCAS) sent me these pics and this info below!! again they are ONLY 10 months old and HW NEGATIVE!!! FOUR NEEDING RESCUE OR A HOME!!!! This is so horrible- he gets deployed and the puppies suffer !!! Two negatives need a POSITIVE.... let's get them out of there!!!!
Kat writes: They are such joyful pups. I little timid on the leash and don’t know how to sit, but the volunteers are working with them to try to help them learn. They are very, very affectionate though. Tons of potential.
