August 12, 2006 10:10 AM Everyone here is encouraged to post any current/old/incoming news concerning children whether it be welfare issues, child exploitation, child abuse and neglect,child labour, child porn, starvation issues..Anything folks..okay?!. Keep NEWS to this thread only so everything will stay tidy. In 1989, when I was just starting out as a new face in the local Malaysian music industry as a Music Producer-cum-Composer,I teamed up with Malaysia's most influential and renown lyricist Habsah Hassan to co-produce with a local record label New Southern Records an charity album for "Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect" "S.C.A.N.". I composed two songs in that album alongwith other composers.From that instance onwards..I knew my passion would be for all children in Malaysia and the world.It is interesting how things turn out for me.I have always nutured a deep feeling of charity.It is part of my nature to do charity in all areas.In my music, in my piano playing, in my productions and even in my jingles for TV and Radio which number well over 200. Nice combination wouldnt you say: Children and Animals.I love it! Brings a warm feeling inside me.People would laugh at me..suspecting I was odd or something.Now I know they're odd! Chiesi Brown Published Aug 11, 2006 A Rochester woman pleaded not guilty to charges she helped her boyfriend sexually assault her 15-year-old daughter. Wendy Wilkins is charged with third-degree rape and criminal sexual act and endangering the welfare of a child. Authorities said that Wilkins helped her boyfriend Miguel Colon sexually assault the girl between January and July. Colon pleaded guilty to third-degree rape earlier this month. Among many factors the poor status of the development activities are also more responsible for the whole cause. From century children’s economic system remain unchanged in the poor countries. Poor political system, and poor programs are equally responsible. Children literacy rate is still low, infant mortality rate is still high. This is very bad signal for reducing child poverty. Other serious problem are seen in the policy area, such as in school curriculum development, and quality of education. Even there are many ways to enhance children development. Some of the important instruments are to raise children education, better hospitals and services. But existing programs are not capable to develop children status. Today, the fight to reduce poverty will succeed only by elaborate campaigns to change our programs, a task for which we are admirably suited. 1. To get more money to poor children welfare reformists must spend more time and money using the media to change attitudes toward poverty instead of writing about it in obscure academic journals. Therefore, we must spend more time and money keeping the child poverty problem uppermost in our minds, pricking their “conspicuous consumption” attitudes, and reminding them that the poor are not necessarily poor from laziness, but rather from the attitudes of those around them who have plenty. Furthermore, it is necessary to remind the taxpayers through the mass media that reducing child poverty results in less dangerous and costly criminality, and more productive workers and citizens; in other words, the rich amply benefit by helping the poor. With respect to the effects of high child poverty, we are in the realm of speculation. Since poverty usually is defined as inadequate food, clothing, shelter and medicine, it is circular reasoning to show that child poverty produces inadequate food, clothing, shelter and medicine. There are divisions between abolitionists and pro slavery advocates. How can children survive without economic development? The issue of the economy are two viewpoints on the nation. Even economy is mentioned as a minor issue along with several other issues. We should realize that poverty is the issue at the economy. Maintain the strong economy is the key component to reducing child poverty. Lose that bond and we will see poverty that we have never dreamed of. Poverty And Domestic Workers Children Even Human Rights Watch said in a new report today “Domestic workers face a wide range of grave abuses and labor exploitation, including physical and sexual abuse, forced confinement, non-payment of wages, denial of food and health care and excessive working hours with no rest days. Migrants and children are especially at risk of abuse. “Millions of women and girls turn to domestic work as one of the few economic opportunities available to them. Abuses often take place in private homes and are totally hidden from the public eye. In the worst situations, women and girls are trapped in situations of forced labor or have been trafficked into forced domestic work in conditions akin to slavery. Domestic workers are often hostage to labor agents and employers. Governments must better regulate working conditions, detect violations and impose meaningful civil and criminal sanctions. said report. According to ILO more girls under 16 work in domestic service than in any other category of child labor. Exploitative working conditions often make domestic labor one of the worst forms of child labor. Human Rights Watch urged governments to extend key labor protections to domestic workers, establish minimum standards of employment regionally to prevent unhealthy competition, and ensure that employers and labor agents are held accountable for abusive practices. They should also prioritize the elimination of the worst forms of child labor, including child domestic work. Recommendation Regarding above views the authority should consider following measures to reduce child poverty. It should identify the major macro and micro barriers obstructing programs. It needs to provide economic opportunities to the parents and to rural household and raise social and economic status by increasing their income. Authorities programs and policy should be effective to make the target groups successful. Authorities also need to provide plan for enhancing national programs. It should also aim for increasing the income of rural poor. anonymous	Kerala News August 12, 2006 10:36 AM Over 18,000 kids rescued by child labour task force Mumbai, Aug 8: Over 18,000 children have been rescued from their workplaces in the city in the last one year by the task force set up to curb child labour, Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said here today. The children have been sent to district collectors of respective states from where they came here, he said. In Mumbai, 36 localities have been declared as "child labour free" localities, Patil said. The number of child labourers in the state had declined from over 27,000 in April 2005 to about 8,000 by July 2006, he said. Agnes C.	August 13, 2006 8:48 AM To protect children all over our Country has been growing quite fast. Not the required yet due to the huge distances from one place to the other. Various actions have been introduced to a) have parents more informed and aware of what goes on / can happen to their children, b) keeping the children in school for at lest 6 hours/day (parents/responsible ones receiving an amount for each child in school and provided they do not miss their classes), c) intensive hard work against children working as “domestic employees” and also in the fields (mainly when of sugar cane crop, hard, hard dangerous work) d)intense campaign against Sexual Tourism. Also it is spreading the “Community” gathering to have the children to some kind of group meeting when they learn dance, music, theater, , drawing and painting etc. TV campaigns are on (also in the radios) calling for the attention of the adults to the risks (and punishments) regarding the not-well caring for the children. I do not have the statistics right now, figures are still high but from the past 6 years todate they have decreased and am glad to say, all official entities and NGOs are working hard to reduce these figures. The main worries regading children in Brazil are related to the children working as adults and prostitution. In the case of child prostitution, also to e mentioned the abuses committed in their own homes – results mainly from lack of knowledge and orientation by their parents, alcohol consumption and dissimination of drugs among the young ones. Violence is still a great problem here as well. Somehow the financial help to the families to keep children in schools have helped reducing this too but…as I mentioned, distances are a problem, people to be daily in the fight still small nr. versus the huge work to be carried out. We do have hopes, however, that spreading these actions starting with the families, going to through the communities and schools and the severe punishments being imposed to those that break the Laws, that some even better results will be showing up in the near future. And this improvement is what we hope, will also take place in all Nations. Nothing of what is being done to protect our Children will be enough untill one day we can say "Our Children are Children and are safe, not starving nor hungry, not raped not suffering from any kind of human abuse". (11/08/2006 - 12h29-Brazil local time) Jury sentences woman to 38 years in jail for killing 11 years old baby-sitter The Jury Court of Belém (capital for the State of Para, in the Northeast of Brazil) sentenced Roberta Sandreli, 21 years old, to 38 years in prision for having participated in the torture and dead, in November 2005, of a 11 years old girl that worked in her house as baby-sitter. The Jury Members took about 16 hours to debate the case and sentence was known early this Friday (11.August.2006) Roberta Sandreli´s lawyer, Dorilvaldo Belem, will petition for a new Jury having in view that the sentence surpassed 20 years. In Brazil the maximum inprisioning is of 30 years.. This 38 years sentence was of 30 years for the crime itself – committed due to thorpe cause, futile (jealousy the woman had on her husband), use of cruel methods and lack of defense means by the child and 8 years for “home prision” of the girl. The girl´s body was found inside the house where the defendants were living. She was working there for 3 months, to look after a 2 years old child, and that with her mother´s consent because it had been promised to her the child would study and receive gifts. The legal exams shown that the child was raped, received electric shocks, was with burnts and was spanked to dead. In her defense Ms.Sandreli affirmed that she was forced by her “husband”, Ronivaldo Guimarães Furtado, to participate in the crime. Mr.Furtado, on his turn, affirmed that his “wife” was the one who spanked the child because she had jealousy , suspecting he was trying to “use” the girl.. Mr. Furtado´s trial will be decided in a few days. On a first psychiatric exam, it was declared that he is “totally incapable”. He shall be submitted to new exams as the Public Ministry has questioned this first results considered not definitive to avoid him going to Jury. If these next exams prove that he is capable, sane, a new Jury date will be determined for him. In his sentence Judge Raimundo Flexa wrote that “it is easy to conclude that the baby-sitter was killed with perversity and sauvagery coldbloodeness”. [ send green star] [ accepted]

It is to deeply regret that this child was killed by those that were in charge of having her at school and well taken care of. This having no way out as unfortunately she died, it is to be noted that the Jury and the Judge did their job perfectly. In no case here that involves children, sentences have been light. And from strong decisions as this one we have clearly noticed decline in murder of children (except when it refers to one child killing another, legislation is different, they go to a "special" (awful) place till they reach 21 y.old and then get out "records clean...."). In many small poor cities it is quite common to the mothers to have their girls as baby sitters because they being poor this job will somehow help the family as a whole. This is being hardly worked upon to reduce the childen working before they are 16 y.old and some good results have already been achieved. [ send green star] [ accepted]

RE:JonBenet Ramsey August 17, 2006 11:23 AM I watched this last nite on CNN and it was just so unbelievable.The parents have suffered so much for 10 years trying to prove that they are innocent when everyone was against them and the real killer was out there looking for another victim.I remember the interview with Barbara Walters a couple of years ago and the way the media portrayed this case was that the parents tried to sell their daughter using her beauty and she couldn't win the beauty pageant and basically that is why they killed her.The media and the police concluded that they should be guilty because there was no other suspect and also they acted pretty weird on camera.Imagine if my daughter is brutally murdered,I'll be acting more than weird,that's for sure.If the police has done their job properly to look for a suspect outside this family, then maybe another kid could be saved.And the mother died from cancer so she couldn't even see that at the end there is justice for her family.This is such a tragedy. Joann S.	drugs and kids dont mix August 22, 2006 11:55 AM hello iam a grand mother who lost my granchild do to drugs. my daughter inlaw was staying with us and we had a family swim party, her sister showed up with her too little boys, she was hight on drugs, everone in family had tryed to help her, C.P.S. was called many times but no action was taken. When my daughter in law asked her to leave she got mad , she throw a rock it hit Angla in the head, and she died,the county we are in said they did not have money to persue the case so no charges were filed. C.P.S. at last took her boys so that was good but we miss angla everday, drugs and kids dont mix We pray everday that people will wake up and take better care of the angles god gives them Thank you.
