Ideas needed for a public poll September 01, 2006 11:19 AM
Among the many contributions to the discussion on the Care2 News Network about the recent revelations of widespread recruiter rape were many reports of personal experiences of being raped by recruiters, or of being raped during service in the military. Some folks knew of family members or friends who have been raped.
Here is just one example which suggest that recruiter rapes is much more commonplace than the press reports to date:
"In 1974, I was 18 years old, never away from home before. I was desperate to get out of the woods and start a life. My recruiter did not "rape" me, per se, but he did seduce me. It was ALL on his pushing, I just wanted to go into the Air Force and get an education. We did not have penis penetration but just about everything in between. His wife was 9 months pregnant. He was the only recruiter within 50 miles. When I went into boot camp in the Air Force, the talk among us girls turned to recruiters. Almost every one of us had been raped or seduced or had sex with our recruiter."
The idea of the public poll is to provide policy leaders with a more complete, if anecdotal, picture of the magnitude of the problem.
So... What questions should be asked? How should the poll be circulated?

I think the first thing that should happen is to allow the person the option of answering the poll anonymously. There may be some people out there that would love to answer, but are afraid to put their name out. Some questions that may be good:
Are you male or female?
Are you currently serving in the military?
Do you feel that your recruiter took advantage of you?
Did you have sex with your recruiter?
If yes to the above, were you raped (probably need to define the word raped here)?
Were you seduced?
Did you consent to the sexual encounter?
If you were raped did you report it?
What was the outcome of the report?
I'm sure there are many more questions that could be involved in the poll.

In my courses they tell us that rape is NOT limited to sexual penetration ... you may have covered that elsewhere b/c I remember the reference somewhere else about the definition.
