Critical Meeting in Norway - We'll Be There On February 6 -7, the Natural Solutions Foundation will attend a vitally important informal working group in Oslo, Norway on Genetically Modified/Engineered (GM) food labeling. We are leaving at 2:30 AM on Monday morning, February 4 and will turn around to come back to Thailand on February 8. Why make such a difficult short trip? Because a crucially important aspect of your health and health freedom is on the block in Norway and you need to be represented there. Our side needs to be there in person to listen, observe, interact and build allies for health and health freedom. Remember, our food supply is globalizing at a rapid rate. The US is the dominant dog in Codex and, almost without exception, whatever the US wants, the US gets. Unlabeled Biotech foods is one exception. Fluoride in baby formula for healthy infants, as you may recall, was another. But the US tried a really clever ploy that may have been just a little too clever and may have backfired, big time! Biotech Fighting Hard, Dirty Here's the story: the Biotech industry has bought and bullied the US regulatory agencies (e.g., USDA and FDA) so that it can mix its genetically modified, unsafe and untested products into the food supply without any identification or labeling. Many countries fear what these dangerous and unnatural "foods" can do to the health and fertility of the people who eat them (and grow them) and to the environment. They don't trus the commercial "science" telling them that these prodicts are safe and observe that the incidence of cancer, lethal allergies, and other major preventable diseases rises dramatically while fertility drops drastically when people eat these contaminated foods. They understand the consequences of damaged and GM food in the dismal health of the US and are not eager to be next in line for this food-born set of illnesses. Robert Mugabe shared his conviction when opening a conference in Harare, Zimbabwe last year on feeding Africa that the West is intent upon killing Africa with GM food. Other countries feel the same way or distrust the technology since it has not been proven to be safe. Opposition Strong, Sustained The EU and Norway, like India, Africa and other developing economies, are far more alert to the dangers of GM foods than we are. They simply do not want unlabeled GM food in their food supply. India's Supreme Court, for example, recently issued its third injunction against growing genetically altered food crops. Monsanto and its ilk simply ignored the first two injunctions with impunity. As with so many other food contaminations which benefit the multinational interests, the US acts as if it can force the whole world to accept the same kind of food degradation we have in the US -- and get them to pay top dollar for it, too. As the Minister for Food Production Industries literally shouted at me in his living room in Delhi 3 months ago, "The United States has ruined its own health with Western Food and now you want to ruin India's health?" The same anger and resistance to the US agenda is evident in the current GM battle. Brilliant US Ploy Backfires At the last Codex Committee on Food Labeling (CCFL, May, 2006, Ottawa) the US tried a brilliant feint: knowing that there was strong, prolonged and effective opposition to its attempts to slide unidentified GM food into the world's international food trade, the US delegate to that meeting, Dr. Barbara Schneeman, told the CCFL that the US now wanted to drop the whole issue. February 09, 2007 6:55 AM True ... actually I just finished reading this article in Globe and Mail: Body can fight antibiotics for months, study shows HELEN BRANSWELL Canadian Press TORONTO — Taking a single course of a certain type of antibiotics gives rise to high levels of antibiotic resistant bacteria in the mouth, an effect that persists for at least half a year, a new study released Thursday reported. The extraordinary persistence of the effect startled the scientists who discovered it and others in the field as well — and underscores the need for judicious use of these precious drugs, experts said. Senior author Dr. Herman Goossens said he and his co-authors assumed that if they followed the subjects in their study for six months they would see the rates of resistant bacteria in participants' mouths return to normal levels. But that didn't happen. “We were pretty staggered by these data,” said Dr. Goossens, a microbiologist at the University of Antwerp, in Belgium. “We never expected this.” The finding, reported in the journal The Lancet, is a sharp reminder of the power of antibiotics, suggested Eric Brown, a biochemist at McMaster University in Hamilton. “So a quick course of antibiotics and a half a year later, you're still carrying resistant organisms. That's a little bit terrifying,” said Dr. Brown, whose laboratory is working on alternative ways to kill bacteria, because of the rising problem of antibiotic resistance. It also suggests doctors treating patients for bacterial infections should carefully consider which antibiotics they prescribe if those patients have taken antibiotics within the last year. “If you're a doc who's about to treat a patient who has been treated before, it should have an impact on the decisions you make about what to give that patient,” Dr. Brown said. The study, which was partially funded by drug maker Abbott Laboratories, is the first to definitively show that antibiotic use is the major factor in the emergence of antibiotic resistance, Dr. Goossens said. It seems a bit like proving the assumed. Plenty of research has shown that as antibiotic use rises in a population, the rate of antibiotic-resistant infections within that population rises as well. And infection control experts have been campaigning for years to get doctors to cut back on antibiotic use out of a fear that resistance is increasing at such a rate as to threaten the continued usefulness of these drugs. But those studies could only draw a link between antibiotics and antibiotic resistance — they couldn't be used as proof that use of the drugs causes resistance. This study proves the effect, Dr. Goossens said, by studying individuals. Healthy volunteers who took one of two antibiotics from a class called macrolides had a rapid and dramatic spike in antibiotic-resistant streptococci in their mouths. The Truth Would Be Confusing and Misleading!" Says FDA Apparently FDA's Barbara Schneeman, PhD is really smart. Everyone else at the FDA and the US Departments of Agriculture, Commerce and State is really smart, too. Apparently, in their minds, you and I are not very smart at all. According to Dr. Schneeman's oft-repeated statement at the recently concluded Working Group on GM foods last week (Oslo, Feb. 6-7, 2007), the US Delegate at the recently concluded Codex Working Group on Genetically Modified (GM) foods we, the consumers, cannot be trusted to make the right choice if the US labeled GM foods! Based on their research, US consumers consistently state that if they knew which foods were GM and which were not, they would opt for the GM ones. In the words of Dr. Schneeman, GM information on labels would be "false and misleading" and would "confuse the consumer" into "making the wrong choice". What's The Wrong Choice? NOT Buying GM Food, Says FDA. According to Dr. Schneeman, research shows that Americans overwhelmingly prefer to eat real food, not GM "FrankenFood". They are willing to spend more money for real food and go out of their way to avoid untested, unproven and unappealing unnaturally modified lab foods. To prevent us from making that "wrong choice" and continuing to eat the food that have sustained us for virtually every bit of human history, the paternalistic, "food fascist" US government has a great strategy: don't tell Americans what they are eating and don't give them the opportunity to make that terrible choice to eat safe food! You have to admire the breathtaking audacity and out-of-the-Bill-of-Rights-and-Constitutional Authority-Box reasoning of these unelected bureaucrats! Supreme Court: 'Government May Not Prevent Spread of Truthful Information to Consumers' In the famous Thompson v Western States Medical Centers case, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor wrote a critically important opinion about whether the US Government could suppress truth to prevent consumers from acting as they chose in matters of health, "If the First Amendment means anything, it means that regulating speech must be a last - not first - resort….We have previously rejected the notion that the Government has an interest in preventing the dissemination of truthful commercial information in order to prevent members of the public from making bad decisions with the information." Thompson v Western States Medical Centers referred to the right of the public to choose compounded drugs over prescription drugs but the principle is exactly the same here. Significantly, Justice O'Connor added, discussing the rights of compounding [custom] pharmacists to inform consumers about this option, "Even if the Government did argue that it had an interest in preventing misleading advertisements, this interest could be satisfied by the far less restrictive alternative of requiring each compounded drug to be labeled with a warning that the drug had not undergone FDA testing and that its risks were unknown."* That's an interesting idea which Justice O'Connor laid out with great relevance to GM foods: if drugs compounded by pharmacists could be labeled "that [they] had not undergone FDA testing and their risks were unknown", why shouldn't GM food bear the same warning? Somehow, the issue of safety (in this case, lack of safety) of GM foods has gotten pushed way, way under the green CP rug: that's "Corporate Profits". [ send green star]

In fact, she sang another verse of "America the UnBeautiful", to the mingled apparent amusement, shock and distress of the pro-consumer countries present. Countries Say: "We Trust Consumers to Use Information Correctly" Most of the nations represented at the meeting made it clear that they spend a huge amount of effort accurately and truthfully informing their consumers about GM foods. In fact, the EU website devoted to the subject was reported at the meeting to be among the largest websites in the world. They hide nothing from the consumer in this debate and have made consumer information and truth in labeling a corner stone of their regulatory public policy. Fantasy "First Amendment Issues" Draw Gasps, Titters from Delegates India, the EU, Japan, Norway and others responded with an audible gasp (followed by titters) as Dr. Schneeman defended the FDA's adamantly paternalistic, anti-consumer refusal to label GM foods "because it is a First Amendment issue". She said that "the FDA could not compel a company to put something on its label because that would be a violation of the First Amendment". Excuse me? The FDA tasked with enforcing accurate and truthful labeling for drugs, devices, foods and supplements, suddenly demurs and does not feel that, despite its general practice, it can apply truthful labeling standards to Big Biotech although it rides supplements particularly hard in this regard? What's that I smell? Have I caught a whiff of corporate corruption, influence peddling and dangerous disregard for public safety and the future of the environment here? "EU Adamant: No Unlabeled GM, Tell Consumers Everything" The EU was unyielding at the CCFL meeting: no GMs without labeling and precious few GMs for human consumption, (despite high levels of GM feed for animals). Consolidation of their ability and will to choose options other than those presented by the US developed. From our point of view, we watched as the might and weight of the US position was thrust aside by nations activated to protect the rights and health of their people. That was, frankly, inspiring. A systematic view developed of how countries carry out their GM labeling and how very important consumer information and choice are to many countries. We see this as a possible paradigm shift if this trend is expanded upon properly. The US Biotech Buddies and, in particular, the US made themselves ridiculous in their blind commercialism. February 15, 2007 8:06 AM Received today about the previous post: My most recent post, "I Never Met A Consumer I Could Trust", contained some typographical errors which this email is designed to correct. Thank you for your time in reading this information and incorporating it into the FDA/GM picture. Consumer research consistently indicates that US consumers, like others, would prefer NOT to buy or consume genetically modified food (variously called GM, GMO, GE or biotech food by official sources and "FrankenFood" by many health advocates). The US FDA believes that consumers would "make the wrong choice" (that is, NOT buy genetically modified foods in favor of natural ones) if they had the information necessary to make that decision. Therefore, the FDA policy is to deny consumers access to accurate information about genetically modified foods since labeling such foods accurately, they say, would be "false and misleading". The FDA maintains that genetically modified foods are safe although the US FDA does not carry out or review any safety data on genetically modified foods. The US FDA does not require safety testing, conducts no safety testing, does not examine documentation of any safety testing for these foods. Instead, it relies solely upon the assertion of the patent owner (the company that wants to market the GM food) that the product is safe for human or animal consumption and poses no threat to the environment. If GM food has the same sensory characteristics as natural food, the FDA will grant a "Certificate of Equivalency" which has no safety assurance associated with it whatsoever. If GM food is "substantially different" from natural food, that difference will be labeled, but the fact that the difference arises from genetic modification is not labeled. The US FDA regulates advertising/labeling claims and can removes products and devices it believes are unsafe or dangerous from the market and does so regularly. In the matter of genetically modified foods, the FDA policy is different since it takes no responsibility for food safety assurance in these products. It also pursues a policy which shifts questions of safety (and hence liability) for marketing unsafe foods to the the courts although in other areas, it makes efforts to determine safety of food, drugs and devices before they are put on the market, and thereafter, as well. This judicial determination is rendered, in my opinion, meaningless if there is no way of tracking whether GM foods have been consumed because of absent food labeling. The US Delegate to the recent Working Group on Genetically Modified Foods (Feb. 6-7, 2007, Oslo) stated that the FDA could not compel companies to "say things on their labels that they did not want to say" because of "First Amendment Issues" despite the fact that the FDA regularly compels companies to add or remove language which the FDA feels is appropriate. I was kiddnaped from my own home! I want to make it very clear that I believe the majority of police officers are very close to the ideal, I talk about in my "Onion" paper. I also want to make it very clear that in my opinion every employ I met at Blackfoot was an example of a caring medical professional. In any job you are expected to do as you are told and assume it's the right thing to do. I don't think the doctors and nurses at Blackfoot are hiding the truth. I think they are looking for the truth. People are being illegally forced to take this resperdal against their will, even when it is not needed and dangerous side effects are likely. Johnson and Johnson is lying about it's safety and effectiveness and paying government officals to promote it. I believe my lack of "sanity" is used as an excuse for not dealing with the real problems with the way people are treated. Let my victims come forward and tell me what I have done, so I may repent! In all of September I was allowed only one visit from my mom and never got a phone call. Why didn't they except the 1st psych. evaluation. at the start of September? I talked to only one representative from the public defenders office I asked him to tell my mom I was OK and have her get the proof all my money was legally obtained. He was not my lawyer. He did not do what I asked. He did not state my case. He went against my wishes. He never even informed my mom of my incarceration. On the 25th I ate green beans, then my throat swelled shut. I slept around 12 hours. I woke up in urine and feces. I asked for a shower and waited around an hour before being rushed to court. I sat in chains for 3 hours and never saw a judge or a lawyer. Why did they have to torture me and talk me into a second psych. evaluation, that I did not want or ask for? A person should not be abused because of their physique, odor, clothing or biological needs. After my 1st poisoning they waited 3 days, to give me scrambled eggs cooked in corn oil the mourning of the psych. evaluation.. If corn oil was not a poison to me, how would I know the difference on eggs or green beans? A person should not be abused because of their nervous and shaky motions balance and gracefulness, pace and volume of speech, or handwriting reading and spelling. A person should not be abused because of their abilities perception, use of figurative speech, or idealism. Is my idealism any excuse for this treatment? If I believe we can learn to love each other and plant gardens every where, dose that make me insane? Who are you to doubt me? Should I be abused or arrested? Let my victims come forward and tell me what I have done, so I may repent! No more of this punishment without description of a crime! After 46 days in jail I was sent away On October 24th. I was forced to take drugs I did not want or need. The drugs made me dizzy and sick, they blurred my vision and clouded my mind. My belly swelled with pain, but finally they took me off the drugs treated my thyroid problem and found me fit to proceed. On December 21st I was returned to jail. On the morning of January 2nd I finally got a preliminary hearing I was in formed that day. My lawyer was notified December 27th. The prosecutor called the 1st witness she looked like She seemed confused and looked like she hadn't slept in a week. She said the drug task force agent had asked her for the names of me and my roommate when she was caught with pot. She plead the 5th and asked for her counselor. The 2nd witness was the drug task force agent J. Mason himself. He was nervous cause he was telling lies. His testimony contradicted his report. He listed off witnesses and pieces of evidence, but he never showed any evidence or produced other witnesses. Let my victims come forward and tell me what I have done, so I may repent! Alf I.	re: antibiotics. April 09, 2007 6:25 AM I'm jumping in a bit late here but regarding the antibiotics stuff earlier, if you eat meat you are getting doses of antibiotics everytime you eat it. Factory farmed animals are dosed regularly with antibiotics to stop them dying from the multitude of infections they get being in such cramped conditions. Think what that is doing to your body!!! This strategy violates US legislation AND US Supreme Court decisions (case law). In the public comment we are urging you to send to the FDA those violations are spelled out. Briefly, the 1994 Dietary Supplements Health and Education Act, DSHEA, says that supplements are foods and foods are generally regarded as safe. Dangerous supplements can be removed from the market. All others are to be left alone. The Supreme Court said that the FDA MAY NOT control information to keep people from doing what they want to and what the FDA does not want them to - in this case, know about supplements and buy them. You may recall that in my lecture "Nutricide" I defined Nutricide as: 1. The death of a body of knowledge about the health benefits of food and 2. The death of large numbers of people through manipulation of the food supply. This Guidance is Definition No. 1, pure and simple. This Bill proposes significant changes to the current Food and Drugs Act that would remove critical checks and balances from Health Canada and endanger your Constitutional rights to "life, liberty, and security of person" (Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Section 7). Without immediate action from concerned citizens like you, this Bill will soon be law in Canada.
