  • Alexander Von Humboldt, German geographer and naturalist, said that Nature is a unity in diversity. We would not have an active Earth, including the history of the human race, if Von Humboldt's observation was not true. Nature, beyond the human race, continues to exist with this understanding of the power of the diverse despite the man-made pressures we have subjected her to. Diversity is in essence nature, whether we talk about a mangrove forest or the makeup of a society. Recognizing diversity is about more than just tolerance. It is about valuing a person's individuality as well as their role in the greater ecology of life.

In this issue of the Buzz, Carl Anthony invokes a new story about race and class in our cities, Rachel Remen's book My Grandfather's Blessings: Stories of Strength, Refuge and Belonging reminds us of the power of selflessness, Michael Pollan shares provocative ideas on local food production, and much more.
