Hi Everybody! My thoughts on this subject. August 29, 2005 8:39 AM
I'm new to the group and just wanted to put in my 2 cents. I think people who insist that animals don't experience emotions are willfully blind to what they see if they spend any time with animals at all. This, mainly due to human arrogance/anthropocentrism.
Even from a purely scientific standpoint,if it is true that the limbic system is the part of the brain that processes emotions, then emotions should be automatically ascribed to any animal that has one. After all, the limbic system deveolped in them before it did in us. And, since the limbic system is proportionally larger in other animals than in humans, it would make sense that emothions play and even larger role in their awareness and their lives than in ours. (BTW I do think animals who don't have limbic systems experience emotions also, they just process them in a different way.)
Even my pet snakes, who are considered so "other" or "alien" to most people express themselves quite clearly. If you've ever seen a snake at the vet getting worming medicine, you have never seen a clearer expression of "Ewww, that's disgusting!" in your life.
Anywyay, nice to know there are some like-minded people around.
