Family court judges who decide cases based on their misguided desire to protect parental rights often thrust families into danger. Allegations of parental abuse by the other parent in child custody cases often go unheeded by judges, and people die.

Sentencing, parole reforms are key to getting state Corrections costs in line. Michigan taxpayers spend $1.9 billion a year -- $5 million a day -- to lock up more than 50,000 prisoners. That's more than it spends on higher education. .

Theresa, There are so many horrible things that are going on all over the world. Things that are so horendouse that even our imaginations can't concieve all of the trama or pain that is endured by the weaker or victim.
Your Timmy became depressed at a time in life that hits a lot of teenagers; that's why there are so many teenager suicides; society have just begun learning to recognize that this is a concern that is definately note worthy. Your Timmy was depressed and he was so very fortunate that you recognized it within him. A lot of people put it down to being something totally differant and that lands them into a whole different ballgame. But Timmy had that with you. I feel that this whole thing has been suffered, has been mourned, and that only God can begin the healing process that needs to take place eventually for Timmy as well as all of the other people who have died in the same way or sercumstances but nobody ever said anything about it to the outside world. With Timmy's case you have been very fortunate that you picked up on the evidence so quickly. I don't know if I would have. I give you so much credit for fighting the way that you have. It certainly looked as though Timmy had a very good life when he was healthy. My family knows alot about depression, personally as well as from others who have to deal with the people who are the depressed. I will obviously continue to pray for you and your family, but I will add that God is to start the inner healing within his time, we expect him to do things when we are ready, but we must remember that it has to be in God's time, it's always in his time. Rest as much as you can for now; okay?
Hello Theresa my family all watched the show and was so proud of you, your a great mom, sorry we had to meet this way,but so glad we did get to meet ,you and Timmy will be in my heart allways.I did not like what that women had to say,she has no heart and she made me a little mad,but the rest of the show was great. Went to see my son this weekend, and said to tell you he prayes for you,and hes so sorry your son had to die.He said to tell you thank you for trying to help him,and for being here for me his mom.God bless and no Iam praying for you JoAnn..

I thought the 60 minutes segment was very good - Theresa, you are really being a good mom to Timmy by not giving up on this!
I was alittle disturbed by the statement made by the lady representing the prison when she said a couple of cases are being sensationalised! Did this bother anyone else?? How can someone being chained up to basically die of over-heating, dying of hunger & thirst be considered sensationalism at all - I bet she would think differently if it were someone in her family.
In today's Daily Telegram there is an announcement that Jackson Prison is closing along with some other Michigan Prisons due to the budgets. Is this the same location Timmy was at???
Thank you Dee-Dee and Theresa for these wonderful sites * and* tributes to Timmy. You are both doing something wonderful by helping so many others. Love you both, Carol
I pray for the families and pray for Mother God and Father God to comfort these souls here on earth and as they journey to heaven. Wrap all in your arms and surround them with angels to provide peace and love. My heart breaks for you but please know your loved ones are no longer suffering, they have gone home and will be happy and at peace from now on. God loves and so do I. Rebecca

Restraining hold used at Fulton County facility questioned
By DAN HIGGINS, Staff writer Click byline for more stories by writer. Last updated: 3:22 p.m., Tuesday, February 20, 2007 PERTH -- A grand jury will decide whether to file charges against workers at the Tryon Residential Center for Boys in Fulton County following the death of a Bronx teenager in November.
Fulton County District Attorney Louise K. Sira said today that Darryl Thompson, 15, went into a cardiac arrhythmia moments after he was restrained by two workers at the youth facility. He died about an hour later.
Thompson, who had been at Tryon since March 2006, had a heart abnormality that may have contributed to his death, according to a final autopsy report prepared by pathologist Dr. Michael Sikirica.
Sikirica's report noted no evidence of excessive force, and there was no sign of drugs in Thompson's body.
Still, Sikirica ruled the manner of death was ``homicide'' because the irregular heartbeat that led to his death was brought on by stress from the altercation with staff.
But, Sira said, a grand jury will decide if the youth division aides, John P. Johnson, 54, and Robert Murphy, 53, acted negligently. The panel may also look at the policies of the state's Office of Children and Family Services on restraining youths, Sira said.
Adult restraints on children have been the focus of debate over the Tryon incident and another, which happened less than a week ago. On Thursday, 13-year-old Jonathan Carey, a resident of the O.D. Heck Developmental Center in Niskayuna, died after workers there allegedly applied an improper physical hold on the boy, who was autistic and mentally retarded. Those workers were charged with manslaughter after they allegedly drove around with Carey in their van for 90 minutes, running errands, before seeking medical help.
I sent the governor of Michigan an email via www.michigan.gov and clicked on the "contact the governor" link and demanded the resignation of Patricia Caruso. I asked the governor herself how she would like to endure being restrained.?!!! How dare she allow this person and persons to remain in their positions after viewing the smiling b_____ on the 60 minutes broadcast and suggested that perhaps she is as evil a person as Caruso. I hope everyone bombards this office with emails and phone calls demanding the resignation of these evil murderous people. Please let them know that we will not tolerate it and demand resignations and for the governor herself to step down. Poor Michigan that they have this type of government! May the all the angels in heaven surround Timothy and his family with love. My heart breaks for you all. Please know that Timothy is happy now and surrounded in love and peace. ACT NOW to SPEAK OUT AGAINST THIS TORTURE!!! Rebecca S. Kennedy

A federal judge held state corrections officials in contempt of court Thursday for allowing prisoners to receive inadequate medical treatment at three prisons in Jackson, threatening to fine them $2 million plus $10,000 a day for continued failure to comply.
U.S. District Judge Richard Enslen of Kalamazoo also ordered the Michigan Department of Corrections to create an independent health monitor's office staffed with physicians, nurses and others at the prisons to ensure prisoners receive adequate treatment.
"A prisoner who receives a sentence of 2-10 years deserves to do 2-10 years," Enslen said in a 61-page order. "What he does not deserve is a de facto and unauthorized death penalty at the hands of a callous and dysfunctional health care system that regularly fails to treat life-threatening illness."
Timothy Joe Souders, a mentally ill prison inmate, died Aug. 6 from hyperthermia and dehydration after he was shackled to a bed for most of four days during a heat wave, an autopsy confirmed.
