Brain Storming Thread December 12, 2006 3:26 PM

I figured we could use a thread where we could talk about new ways we can get the Humanist's message to world leaders and others that will be willing to spread the concept. The key to making this group, and it's ideals, work, is actually getting some world leaders to read and accept this concept.

If anyone has some fresh ideas please feel free to post them here.  Peace.     Ty

Please span this were ever it is legal and exceptable!!!

My thoughts... December 13, 2006 12:05 AM

My thoughts on the subject, for what they are worth, are simple. I think that we do infact need to spread the word to people. But we need to do so in a way that is sensitive to their current belief system. You will not win anyone over by just beating them up and telling them that their beliefs are wrong. We need to encourage more people to question things. It depresses me to no apparent end at how much people will accept without questioning. We need to encourage people to question everything, and to keep an open mind. I personally have been doing a lot of talking with one particularly religious soldier, and I have gotten her to admit that she can question the bible, and that if it is in fact the infalible word of god, it will easily stand up to questioning. The only reason not to question such a thing is if you are affraid it may fail and thereby shake your belief structure...

I think that if we are sensitive and careful with how we approach people, humanism and an open mind are such blindly logical and obvious stances that people will easily 'see the light'.

Anthony,

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I have been trying to come up with a good approach to people that are ultra-religious and it is a tough subject. I am trying to push Humanism and allow people to continue to keep thier core beliefs. I think then we can gently teach the earth sciences that have been key to our current knowledge about our world and our place in it. I think the evidence of us having evolved as a species is getting to be too overwhelming to ignore. I think this is the first step to developing the knowledge it takes for some people to understand that thier religion's explaination of our beginnings on earth may be flawed. I think this is one of the best seeds to plant because anyone who truely wants peace in the world and has accepted Humanism as a possible worldwide solution needs to eventually come to the conclusion that thier ancient writings they live by are metaphorical and the literal interpetation of the religious rules are one of the biggest stumbling blocks to uniting the world's populations. I see no reason people can't worship thier God if this gives them comfort. I do think they all need to relax thier grip on thier religion as the only possible course through life and try and except other's with different beliefs.  Peace Bro.  Ty

I'm not sure if this would work, but we could make things like those flyes in the store and things like that. I don't know aboutyou guys, but I stop and read those every time I see them.

Anthony and Ty,

For the first 22 years of my life I was extremely religious, fighting with all that came across my path that the bible was right and they were all wrong! It wasn't until my 23 year of life that I realized that there are a lot of flaws in my religion and I began to lean more toward Buddhism and now I am completely lost !! I don't know why my beliefs change they just did. I have found myself still afraid though of sinning and questioning the bible and that is from years and years of being told by Christians and Pentecostals ( my old religion ) that I was going to hell if I believed in anything else or if I had even the shadow of a doubt in my head. In my mind, now, that is wrong I think that there is a higher power and we must respect all that this world give us.... animals.... the ocean..... the land.....humans..... and even down to the blades of grass we walk on. But the reason why I said that is because sadly most people are closed mined and the only way we or any one else could get through to them is by example. If we lead a good life and we make a difference in the world then they will all see and the word will begin to spread...... I don't know if I am making alot of sinse but I am trying, lol! It all makes sinse in my head its just hard to write it down.  We need a world of peace and sadly I feel that the bible is not the way to go. I do hope that you understand what I am writing but I compleatly agree with you both     love and hugs, Brandi

Randi, I am so sorry I haven't been in here for so long. I have had many medical problems and other obligations but I stopped in here to check out the group and I realized I totally missed this post. I agree with every word you said. You were making total sense.

Its really hard to approach anyone with a belief that goes against thier religious teachings. I see no reason people can't allow themselves to learn about other things. Its hard to find that chink to get past the wall some have built. I don't feel that any of these people are at fault, as they are entitled to thier beliefs. My problem is that some refuse to learn about other's beliefs, and in some cases, wish to wipe out anyone who does believe what they do. This, I think, applies to a small precentage of peoples from practically every religion. It is the Zealots that make it difficult.

I think getting the word out about this form of Humanism is key. We must accept that some people have a need for thier form of religion. There is no reason I can see that reason, logic, informed judgement from trial and error and acceptance of everyone else's beliefs and ways of life can't be incorperated into evryones religion.

Thanks Randi for your post. I was inspired by the fact that I did a google search for 'Progressive Humanism' and this group came up third on the first page. I plan to start trying to post more here and I hope our members can come back, and help spread the word of peace to our world leaders, political, governmental, and religious.

Feel free to email me if you'd like.
