Welcome to the "Friends of Ishmael" April 13, 2005 6:18 AM

This is the first group that I hosted here on Care2. I really didn't have a clue what I was doing {not that I'm a whole lot better now}. Shortly after, I got involved in all the atrocity going on right now in America and the world and didn't keep up with this group.

First let me state what I had in mind when I started this group. Anyone that has read Ishmael or seen the movie "Instinct" with Anthony Hopkins will have the general drift. I am not so sure that technology has made life better, only different. I suppose my ideas on this came from National Geographic. Their early presentations on the indigenous peoples of the world always had an impact on me. The folks they showed always seemed to have a smile and appear content {Something you cannot say for those of us living in the "Civilized World"}.

I would like to recommend a couple of movies that I think reinforce this idea.

The Emerald Forest

The Gods Must Be Crazy

Back to the intent of this group. A place to exchange ideas on how we can move the world and America to a more enviromentally friendly place. Also a place where extreme is not the bottom line. A place where compromise and ideas can grow.

Hi Bear (and everyone else). I first read Beyond Civilization last summer (picked it up somewhat randomly from the sociology section at Borders), and from there it wasn't a big leap to reading Ishmael, My Ishmael, and then Story of B.  I have always thought there was something wrong with industrial civilization, but it's not always easy to question what is taken for granted by most of society... not until you realize you aren't the only one. Reading these books was extremely validating, and I cannot wait to discuss it with others who share the same views!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

And thank you very much for the movie recommendations... I shall have to find these and check them out!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
Happy happy happy! March 29, 2006 8:49 AM

I am so happy that I found this group!  I have been looking for an Ishmael forum for months on Care2 but I was looking through the spiritual groups.

I have read all of Daniel Quinn's books and love all of them!  I read Ishmael just over a year ago and read the rest of his books one right after the other.  The inspired me a lot and fit in with many of the spiritual ideas that have started surfacing in my head.

I look forward to the interesting discussions and sharing of experiences that I'm sure will happen here!

Love to all,
