FIX MORTGAGES for Families & Stabilize the Economy! April 22, 2008 9:32 PM

The mortgage market crisis is affecting all homeowners in the U.S. -- and the future of their families -- even if their own mortgage situation is stable. As more homes go into foreclosure, nearby property values plummet, community tax bases decline and local services suffer.

Take ActionCongress is considering legislation on the mortgage crisis in the coming weeks. The bill should:

  • Encourage lenders to restructure loans so people can avoid foreclosure.
  • End lending practices that prevent people from refinancing or steer families into high cost loans when they qualify for better ones.
  • Require lenders to base their lending on a borrower's ability to repay the loan.
  • Make sure whatever federal rules are adopted allow states and local communities to develop additional solutions.

If we can keep families in their homes, the housing market benefits and everyone wins. Sign the petition and tell your lawmakers they need to help the families who are in trouble to stabilize the economy for everyone.

Cleft lips and cleft palates are the fourth most common birth defect in the world, and infants afflicted by these facial deformities in developing countries sometimes do not survive due to malnutrition and starvation. Children who grow up with unrepaired cleft lips and cleft palates find eating and speaking difficult, and they can become totally dependent on their families who may even shut them away, believing they are cursed.

Send a message of hope.»

For more than 25 years, Operation Smile has been helping children around the world with these birth defects. Their volunteer medical teams have treated more that 115,000 children providing free surgery, medicine and follow up treatment. Now they are going to Madagascar.

This is the organization's second mission to the country and we are asking that people send messages of hope to the children who will be receiving the corrective surgery. These children are now ostracized and ridiculed, but they will soon be able to smile without fear. Won't you help encourage them to smile?»

Thanks for taking action!

Not Nuts ... Just Continuing Their Plan May 10, 2007 3:59 AM

It it totally beyond my comprehension, and Phyllis I don't mean this to degrade you in anyway, but how can you only now wonder if the administration is NUTS!! This ID Card has been in the works for years, but it should not surprise you. The administration is using an old blue print for their actions. It's call Mein Kampf.

I could go through all the similarities, but for a few:

  1. Just think of Iraq as being Poland.
  2. they have divided the people against each other (straights against gays; whites VS blacks; non-religious VS the Religious Reich;
  3. imprisoned innocent people along with the guilty without trial or representation;
  4. the list goes on.

As a student of history, just remember, we either learn from history or we repeat it! Is this 1939 all over again? Oooo scary and this time they have bigger bombs!

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Launched Attack on Our Privacy Rights & Freedoms May 06, 2007 9:45 PM

Homeland Security scheming to track every American - Submit comments now!
American Civil Liberties Union The Department of Homeland Security (DH has launched an attack on our privacy rights and personal freedoms.

DHS is aiming to issue a national identity card, known as Real ID, to every American. The national ID card could dictate how you travel, what government buildings you can and cannot enter and whether or not some of your financial transactions would be authorized.

America does not need this costly "big brother" nightmare. Consider the following:

  • The Real ID card will enable the routine tracking of individuals and propel us towards a surveillance society.
  • This scheme opens the floodgates to invade the privacy of ordinary, law-abiding citizens.
  • The creation of a single interlinked database will create one-stop shopping for identity thieves.
  • The Real ID will make it easy for any business to save your personal information and sell it to other companies.
  • People whose religious beliefs forbid them from having their pictures taken or using a social security card will be forced to obey this law to participate in our society.
  • This Act creates huge administrative burdens for each state and will cost Americans over $23 billion through higher taxes and licensing fees. It provides no federal funds for implementation.

The Department of Homeland Security is accepting comments on the Real ID Act through May 8. The number of comments will be watched by many influential Members of Congress, not just your own.

Your personal comments are critical to prevent Real ID from becoming a Real Nightmare! Please add your comments below.

Support the Employee Free Choice Act March 29, 2007 5:03 PM

I thought you might be interested in this Working Families e-Activist Network e-activism campaign.

Today, the Employee Free Choice Act was introduced in the Senate. It is the single most important legislation in 70 years to ensure we have the freedom to form unions and bargain for better wages, benefits and working conditions. The bill is similar to the one that was passed overwhelmingly by the U.S. House a few weeks ago.

With your help, the Senate can continue the work the House began. More co-sponsors are needed to help push the bill through the Senate.

Tell Your Senator to Support the Employee Free Choice Act
The more people who are members of the e-Activist Network the stronger we will be and the bigger impact we'll make.

Earlier this week, several experts appeared before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions to tell senators why the Employee Free Choice Act is so crucial.

Watch video highlights from the hearing here.

Cynthia Estlund, a law professor at the New York University School of Law, points out that the bill would fix current labor law’s “wholly inadequate response to employers’ fiercely aggressive and often illegal response to union organizing drives.”

Please tell your friends, family and co-workers about the Working Families e-Activist Network.

The Employee Free Choice Act will restore a level playing field for workers and employers. It will strengthen penalties against companies that block workers' freedom to choose for ourselves whether to form unions and bargain. It will bring in mediation and arbitration when employees and employers cannot reach a first contract. And it will allow working people to form unions when a majority signs authorization cards—without the conflict, disruption and intimidation employers routinely inflict on us now.

Thank you for supporting the Employee Free Choice Act.

Working America

P.S. Learn more about the Employee Free Choice Act and see videos of workers like Ivo Camilo, Nikkia Parish and Bill Lawhorn at the AFL-CIO’s Employee Free Choice Act website:

For Stronger & More Effective Medicines March 18, 2007 3:02 PM

In the coming days, the Senate will make one of its most important decisions about your family's health by voting on a measure to strengthen our nation's prescription drug safety laws. Act now!

The problem is, this critical bill is in danger of being weakened. The Senate must hear right now from real people like you who want the safest and most effective medicines, rather than drug company lobbyists who prefer the status quo that has let too many dangerous prescription drugs on the market.

Act now: please take a moment to
sign this petition to tell your senators that their vote for drug safety is important to you. And ask them to strengthen, not weaken, S 484, the Enhancing Drug Safety and Innovation Act, to ensure the safety of our medications.

Don't let drug companies put our health at risk. Tell your lawmakers that you want a strong, comprehensive bill that will restore our nation's drug safety system to the gold standard it should be.

Thank you for taking action today,

Tell Big Retail Companies That You Won't Stand for Check-Out Fees! March 08, 2007 4:09 PM

Paying with a credit card is normally a convenience. But if retailers start to charge a check-out fee every time you use a credit card, will it still be convenient, or just expensive? Tell big retail companies that you won't stand for check-out fees! Retail companies are trying to pass check-out fees to the consumers. Consumers will not only feel discouraged from using credit cards, but they will be penalized with a fee if they do so. Sign this petition now to keep credit cards convenient! When a retailer sends a credit card slip to the credit card company or bank for processing, a percentage of each purchase is deducted. This "interchange fee" helps pay for the bank's services and for the credit card system. Retailers are trying to recoup this expense by passing it to the consumer. We can't let big companies take away our personal right to use a credit card at will. Retailers should not be passing fees on to the very consumers who bring them profits. Tell Congress to preserve your right to consumer choice! Say NO to check-out fees!>> Thank you, Robyn E. Care2 and ThePetitionSite Team  [ send green star]

Ban Paperless Voting February 14, 2007 12:27 PM

Subject: Ban paperless voting Hi, Too many voters are still stuck with paperless voting machines—machines that are vulnerable to tampering and malfunction. A new bill in Congress would ban paperless voting. It's got enough support to pass, but time is short. This week, the Democratic leadership is deciding what Congress will take up next. If they don't put voting on the agenda, there simply won't be time to make the change by the 2008 presidential election. We need Congress to ban paperless voting before it's too late. Can you help out by signing this petition to Congress? It's really easy—just click the link below: Thanks!

Protect Anti-Poverty Funding December 27, 2006 1:36 PM

Remember the ONE Campaign? It was a huge success and actually helped to secure a $1 billion increase in anti-poverty funding for 2007! BUT, Congress failed to pass funding bills for the 2007 fiscal year in the closing hours of their session. Take action!

The result is that any funding increases that we secured in 2006 are in jeopardy - as are the lives and livelihoods of millions of the world's poorest people who were counting on this funding. They risk losing access to anti-malarial bed nets, AIDS medicines, clean water, and the opportunity to send their children to school.

Thankfully, there is still some limited money that Congress can allocate for the 2007 budget. We need to let Congress know that we want this money to go towards fighting extreme poverty and global AIDS so that we do not take a giant step backwards.

Mercy Corps and the ONE Campaign are asking you sign this petition telling Congress to protect anti-poverty funding and save lives.

Don't let the progress we made last year be rolled back in 2007 - tell Congress to fight global poverty and save lives.

Thank you for making a difference today!
