Fox News: Trayvon Martin Was Armed - With Iced Tea
1 year ago
| Hot!

Doug Burns speaks to Fox News

A Fox News guest on Monday suggested that George Zimmerman’s lawyers will be able to argue that their client used reasonable force when he shot and killed Trayvon Martin, who was only carrying Skittles and a can of Arizona Iced Tea, because “you could kill somebody” with iced tea.

While waiting for jury selection to begin on Monday, Fox News host Jamie Colby and former federal prosecutor Doug Burns discussed the case on the network’s live Internet video stream.

“I know that George Zimmerman’s attorney will prove that he has no criminal background, he’s not an aggressive guy,” the Fox News host explained. “That he’s a gentle kind caring soul who was minding the neighborhood, the police didn’t get there quick enough and he had reason to pursue, even though he was told no to. He was just doing his Good Samaritan job.”

Fox News is nothing but noise and lies

I think this will be an interesting case to follow.  We all had opinions right away and soem fo the information we heard was baised.  Many of us jumped to conclusions that may have been unfounded,  I hope to continue to foloow this.

I have to admit, the bottom line here seems clear -  an unarmed minor was walking home from the 7-11, eating skittles and talkng on his cell phone.  Zimmerman was advised NOT to pursue Martin, but he did anyway, and he did so armed with a loaded gun.  So, who is guilty here? Maybe I am biased, but it seems really clear to me.

All the arguments I have heard to the contrary indicate that Martin was a thug in his high school and he wore hoodies like a ganster.  He had photos of guns on his cell phone, etc., etc.  My question is, what does any of that have to do with the fact that he was unarmed and he was stalked by an armed man who was not employed by the police and who was acting directly against police directives to stay in his car and let the police handle it?

Zimmerman was looking for trouble.

I am biased as well however, there is that Stand your ground law.

I do think Zimmerman was looking for trouble.  Seems like alot of people are.  Who is to say that Trayvon wasn't.

Unarmed?  Zimmerman did take a beating.

Agreed Nancy...

I work at a university, if wearing hoodies makes you a thug, then most of the students on campus must be thugs <NOT>

Kathy. I do agree with that.

I am just trying to reserve some judgement.  I guess I shouldn't- I might end up on a jury!

I do have an opinion that Zimmerman was out looking for trouble and Trayvon was not.

But given that law, it is likely that Zimmerman will be found not guilty.

Think though, if you lived in a neighborhood and a watch program.  What would you want your neighbors to do?  I would be happy to have them call but not pursue a kid.

In anycase, it will be interesting to see the defense and other evidence.

I wear a hoodie.  LOL!

If somebody stalks me and pulls a gun on me, I should have the right to fight for my life without losing my life and then society letting my murderer run free.  And a beating is not murder.

The application of that stupid Stand Your Ground law will be applied with racism, bet on it.

To answer Nancy, if my area had a neighborhood watch program, I'd be happy if the watcher wasn't toting a gun.

George Zimmerman trial: Trayvon Martin portrayed as 'scary black man'

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2013/jun/11/george-zimmerman-trial-scary-black-man?INTCMP=ILCNETTXT3487

This trial is not about a scarey black man.  This is about a man who shot and killed a man.  Stand your groud law.  Sure he may think he is justified, but I disagree.

As far as Fox News well it is a fact they are nothing more than noise and liers.  What for "just a buck"  lol almost no different than a republian/tea party member

I understand Angelica- more blacks on death row than whites, higherpercentage of convicted murderes who are black (compare to white) put on death row.  If Zimmerman were a black man shooting a white kid wandering through his neighborhood, there would be way different spin.

I don't care for what I know of this stand your ground law.  And I have read of many states kidding rid of it since this incident.

I am in agreement with you.  It's derived from a wild west mentality.  It's founded in hatefulness - at least in the way it's been applied.  But I am not talking about a higher percentage of who is what color on death row.

The facts in this case are clear.  Trayvon was a minor and minors, according to the law, do not have the judgement adults are supposed to have.  That's why they can't vote until they're 18.  He was 17.  Zimmerman, the adult, got out of his car carrying a loaded gun to follow - stalk - Trayvon.  This smacks of premeditation.  Why bring the gun if you weren't planning on using it?  Trayvon, as the victim, as the one stalked, had every right to defend his life.  So he beat Zimmerman up.  Well...yeah.  I should hope so. Zimmerman carried a loaded gun and a case could be made that he was looking for trouble. He did not have the authority to stop Trayvon Martin or question him or molest him in any way, shape, or form simply because he was performing community watch service.

I fear that Zimmerman will be found innocent and that this verdict will spark riots.  We need justice - not politicized vigilantes in the jury box.  One juror that was interviewed on the stand today claimed that he could be fair because he is "sick of Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson speaking out on this case."  Outrageous, since it never was about them.

I hope the jury does a better job than the C. Anthony jury did.  That was frightful.

Neighborhood watch (from wikipedia):

"Neighborhood watches are not vigilante organizations. When suspecting criminal activities, members are encouraged to contact authorities and not to intervene."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhood_watch

I then started thinking of the Guardian Angels, a public safety group:  the red berets.

"The organization accepts volunteers who do not have a recent or serious criminal record and are not members of a gang or racial-hate group. In order to join the Safety Patrol program, members must be at least 16 years old; youth programs for younger applicants are offered. Safety Patrol members are prohibited from carrying weapons and are physically searched before patrolling. They are trained in first aid and CPR, law, conflict resolution, communication, and basic martial arts. Members are paired up and follow the directions of a Patrol Leader. If their own or other citizens' lives or health are endangered, they are allowed to do whatever is lawful and necessary."

I bolded the sentence above.

I would rather have the Guardian Angels in my neighborhood than George Zimmerman.

The George Zimmerman trial will create havoc all over the USA -  if he is found innocent.  His lawyers are already doing everything they can to poison the public's mind about Trayvon Martin.  Blame the victim is all they've got.

That's good information, Nancy, that helps clarify what community watch groups are supposed to do and - what they're not supposed to do (which is what Zimmerman did).  I think this makes it a clear case to determine.  However, it has been politicized way too much and that will play into the jury's decision, I fear.

I am really glad that I don't live in a stand your ground state. WOW

You have to ask yourself why that law was created.  All the answers I get are not good.  The article you posted is accurate.  Scary, sad, and backwards thinking.

Zimmerman clearly stalked Martin, who was an unarmed minor. I don't understand why people are even talking about "if he is found innocent."  How could he possibly be found innocent?

As I recall the stand your ground laws are a creation of ALEC.  Nothing good has come from any ALEC sponsored laws - unless you're among the 1%.

Aren't the Koch brothers behind ALEC?  More garbage from them - just what we need.

Well, he might be found not guillty-  certainly not innocent.

What was so enragin about the article I posted- they sided against the no-white and non-male- in both cases. DESPITE what the white male said- which should have led to the conviction of the white male in the first case, and a not-guilty verdict for the black woman in the second case.  20 yrs?  Disgusting.

I really haven't been following this, but can't see how Zimmerman could be found not guilty, and agree that it will cause a lot of problems if he is.

If Zimmerman really thought Trayvon Martin was a menace and had any desire for justice to administered through proper channels, then whey didn't he simply pull the gun on Martin (not that he had the right to do that) in the first place and detain him until police arrived? He premeditatively started a conflict with someone who was doing nothing threatening, against the direction of police, and knew he could end the conflict quickly (and obviously didn't hesitate to do so).

As ususal, Fox is a sick joke.

Excellent points, Bryan and Nancy.  Stand Your Ground is a racist law. I agree that there was premediation with Zimmerman carrying a loaded gun over to accost Martin.  I think you're allowed to protect yourself if you are approached and threatened by someone with a gun. I also think the fact that Martin was a minor should have some bearing on this case, too.  But it is Florida.  So, we will see.

Don't we already have laws that allow self defense? I'm sure there are some details i'm not understanding, but why do we need "stand your ground" in addition? Maybe it means "protect your turf," but is only applied to people deemed to have that right.

Nancy, that is an enraging article. Truly disgusting.

Bryan- I think that there are state to state variations on that.  I know when I took a self-defense class, it was dicussed.  In some places, criminals do have rights (to not be killed, for exdample).  Of course we were learning exactly how to hit a nose so the septum goes up into the brain.  Not how to use a gun.

I have no problem with defending yourself in your home but in some places the line is drawn at the door.

I think the way Stand Your Ground has been used demonstrates clearly what the intent was.  A black woman who was raped and killed her attacker during that crime was not allowed to use the defense.  George Zimmerman is.  See how it works in Florida?

Zimmerman trial joke leads to apology

Zimmerman trial joke leads to apology

A prosecuting attorney greeted the jury in the George Zimmerman trial Monday with a quote full of expletives, while his adversary decided it was appropriate to tell jurors a knock-knock joke.

And that was just the beginning of opening statements in Zimmerman’s long-anticipated murder trial.

In a case that has ignited national debate about gun laws and race relations, Zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain, is accused of second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in February 2012 in Sanford, Florida.

Judge allows school records in Zimmerman trial

A DNA expert says tests of George Zimmerman's gun revealed the neighborhood watch volunteer's DNA on the firearm's grip — but not Trayvon Martin's.

The lady is a real Lady as Zimmerman is a rasist dumb man.  To think he almost got away with murder.  Yes he still may go free but at least Trayvon and his parents got a trial.  But if I had to bet. I don't think he will go free.

We're talking about Floriduh.  He might very well walk.

Imagine if the juge allows the defence team to act out in Zimmerman words what happen on the night he killed Trayon?

"The young lady that Trayvon was on the phone with said that his last words on the phone were to scream "Get off, get off!" Then the phone went dead.  I believe her."

I haven't heard the tape.  Both families say it sounds like their son.  I keep thinking about that.

On the other hand-  Screaming, gun shots, immediate silence.  Think about that.  (I'd have to hear a real version, not some concocted YouTube versions).  If it had been George screaming, there probably would have been a pause between the screaming and the gun shot while he pulled out the gun amd aimed.

I suppose it all hinges on whether you think that Zimmerman can be found innocent. Right now, it looks like he'll walk on these charges.  But will he really be innocent?  His actions were less than rational on that night.

He was NOT innocent.  The question is whether he is not guilty.

I hear he has already maneuvered himself a lucrative book deal.  I hope that's not true.

OMG-  make sure you DON't Buy it.

lol you think he is counting his chickens before they are hatched?  No matter what Trayon did when Zimmerman was been followed not knowing what was going on.  Zimmerman caused the events that lead up to Trayon being killed.  I don't believe he will just walk out (writing a book racking up his millions)  maybe while he sits in a cell it will dawn on him what he did.

Yes Zimmerman has all the people who wish to make a buck sit up there and defend him but the fact are facts.  And he can not run away from them.

Whether he is found Guilty? Nancy  I have tried to watch this as much as possible even if I have to DVR it and I think he may have 20% change but 80% tells me he will not walk.  But as always the jury has the last word

Now Zimmerman will or not  testify

Zimmerman not guilty: Victory for new kind of civil rights era?

Part of America sees the not guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman case as a travesty of justice, a modern iteration of Jim Crow, where a white man walks free after shooting an innocent black person, in this case an unarmed Florida teenager named Trayvon Martin.

Another part sees in the verdict the emergence of another kind of civil rights movement, a gun freedom movement ultimately tested in the Zimmerman trial by a state willing to forego hard evidence in order to try to prosecute what police originally deemed an open and shut self-defense case.

Prosecutors in the case said Zimmerman had evil in his heart and that he crossed legal boundaries when deciding to follow an innocent Trayvon before shooting him on a rainy February night last year. Zimmerman supporters, though, say he was providing a civic duty in a post-9/11 America, where safety and crime concerns have become paramount even as overall crime rates have dropped to historic lows.
