Safeguard Organic Standards February 04, 2007 1:54 PM
There are many interests who would like to cash in on the interest in organic foods, without actually following the rules. This puts the entire organic industry (and YOUR RIGHTS!) at risk!!!
The Organic Consumers Association is expanding its boycott of Horizon and Aurora organic dairy products to include five national "private label" organic milk brands supplied by Aurora, as well as two leading organic soy products, Silk and White Wave, owned by Horizon's parent company, Dean Foods. Its time to turn up the heat on the "Shameless Seven. Learn more and take action....
Thanks for that article. I took action even though the deadline has passed. I also saw that the site has a whole take action section, so I took action on a bunch of stuff. There is also a survey to take under that section to help shape rules about organic personal products.
I guess until the time we can feel safe with the standards we need to check the label and ingrediants on every piece of food we buy. Time consuming but apparently necessary!
Organic cattle should be pasture fed, not raised in intensive feedlots. Please read the USDA's proposed revisions to the National Organic Program (here) and send your comments. Send your own personally written comments. Thanks!

The official deadline for this campaign has passed as well, but it's a VERY important issue, and I think it would still be good for us all to keep sending letters and letting them know!
The Organic Consumer's Association is a very informative and active organization working to help us retain (regain) freedom of food choice and the right to have organic products andfoods!
This is a very important topic for anyone who eats organic or is thinking about giving it a try. The whole point of organic is to eat real food and nothing but. If these companies are trying to get around the rules then they are no good to us. If they use chemicals of any type then those chemicals are ingested by us and make us sick. If the animal was terrified or traumatized while it was being killed then its body is was flooded with adreniline which we ingest and that is very unhealthy for us. If the animals live in deplorable conditions they will not be psychologically well which lowers their immune system- inviting disease- which we will ingest!
It is very important that we use our voices on this topic or we will just end up eating a more expensive version of "conventional" food. We need people to run organic companies that are interested in making a sustainable living, not people who want to be rich. I believe we have a right to know exactly what we are ingesting and exactly where that food came from and how it lived or was grown.
We have to stay on top of them March 03, 2007 10:23 PM
You are so right. It's a constant battle too. They attempted to change the laws on this about five years ago with letter writing campaigns and petitions stopping them. And any country that imports these products are affected as well. Amazingly, even if the rules are strict for your own producers, does not mean they are strict for the imports. So we all need to stay on top of the organic standards for our own country and others. There should be a universal standard, but that's probably wishful thinking unfortunately.

It's Up to Us to Make Sure They "Get It!" March 11, 2007 5:58 AM
It's amazing how little the general public really understands about healthy food. I actually had one woman offer me Skittles Candy and tell me it's made with real fruit! She went on to say that she can't seem to get her grand-daughter to eat enough of them. People also think KoolAid is a good source of Vitamin C!
It's a shame how brainwashed our society's become. You'd think they'd teach it in school, but I got into a heated debate with my daughter's school once when they wouldn't allow her to choose salad in the cafeteria line! They told her to eat a hot dog instead!
Never assume people know. Let's do all we can to make sure they do! This group is a very good start! Let's invite all our friends!!!
I can see why some people turn away and fall into the "ignorance is bliss" category. Sometimes it is so hard to come to care2 and be reminded of how messed up this country is. It's like I'm in a twilight zone episode where everything is just wrong and all screwed up. I mean really, skittles are made with fruit!! Someone trying to discourage a child from eating salad!
It seems like everywhere I turn in every facet of my life everything is being done wrong and anyone who is trying to do anything right is being persecuted. I was just reading one of the news articles about codex something....If it gets passed all food will have to be irradiated by 2009 and they are going to call herbs and supplements toxins. Probably only you guys can understand how freaking mad I am right now. Those are about the only things that aren't toxins in this stupid country. I guess they've already done this in other countries and it is just horrifying to me. I don't know what to do. I've just learned about organic food and natural medicines and now they want to take that away from me in what is supposed to be the land of the free.
After 35 years of hard work, the US organic community has built a multi-billion
dollar alternative to industrial agriculture. Now large corporations,
aided and abetted by the USDA and members of Congress, are moving to lower
organic standardS and seize control. For the sake of the earth and
our health we must stop them.
Tell USDA that products labeled as "Organic" must be Organic. Vibe
Society & Culture VibraceousThe USDA has announced a controversial proposal, with absolutely no input
from consumers, to allow 38 new non-organic ingredients in products
bearing the "USDA Organic" seal. At least 3 of the proposed ingredients
represent a serious threat to standards.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture National Organic Program (NOP) announced on August 5th that 15 of the 30 accredited organic certifiers they recently inspected failed the USDA audit and will have 12 months to make corrections or lose their accreditation

Peer Review Board
After years of pressure from
watchdog groups like the Organic Consumers Association (OCA), the
Cornucopia Institute, and others, the USDA has finally acknowledged
publicly that there are problems in its monitoring and enforcement
of the National Organic Program (NOP).
In August, the USDA announced
that half of the accredited organic certifiers under an agency investigation
failed their certification audits.
The OCA has emphasized that the
overwhelming majority of organic farmers, producers, and certifiers
are indeed "playing
by the rules," but we need to stop unscrupulous
certifiers and USDA bureaucrats from saturating the organic market with
fraud. We need a professional, well-funded and independent NOP Peer Review
Board, composed of respected members of the organic community, as
required by law, and we need it now.
