Gilbert's links reminded me of an idea I have--many no longer work, which further supports my point.

Internet Relay Chat (IRC) allows users to very easily share files with each other over the Internet. I would like to start a chat group where people could share files, information, zines, media, music, movies, ebooks, etc, as well as chat about issues. It would definitely be relevant to ideas in this group. I want to do this, but I can't do it on my own because I don't have a consistant Internet connection (I kind of mooch with my laptop). This chat method would eliminate the constant problem of good web sites disappearing, and it would allow files to be shared P2P, instead of posted on web space that is both expensive and vulnerable.

If you are not familiar with IRC, it is fairly simple to learn and use. There is a lot of info on it here that can get you started. You need to download a client to connect. They are available for any OS. mIRC is most popular for Windows. I use Colloquy for my Mac.

I highly suggest using IRC to chat or to download music and movies, especially if you don't like paying for things.

But I also think that with a couple people setting up a group with me it could be a useful tool to network, share resources, chat in real-time, and improve communication to accomplish various activist goals.
