Welcome vegan and non-vegan Friends and Family March 19, 2007 12:46 AM
A vegan is someone seeking a humane lifestyle free from exploiting any living species in any way where possible for the benefit of all animals, people and the environment. Invite your vegan and non-vegan friends, and join us to build a World Vegan Network.
Whether you are a vegan or not, and whether or not you choose to become one, we hope that your stay here would give you an educational, friendly and worthwhile experience.
Once again, welcome to the Vegan Group, and thank you for considering us to be part of your family and friends.
Like it says in my profile, I'm a vegetarian and aspiring vegan . My only true weakness seems to be fish . Am now in the process of weaning myself off of it through education and research . Thanks for this group , Nick .
Hello everyone. I've been vegetarian since about the age of 18 and vegan for the last couple of years. Even as a child I used to slip the meat from my dinner plate to our little dog who used to sit eagerly under the dining table! Looking forward to getting to know you all, picking up advice and maybe sharing some too.

This month I am a vegan for 12 years. Before that I was a vegetarian. The day I become a vegan, it was like "coming home". This is what a really am and this is what I will stay the rest of my life. I feel very welcome in this group and hope to learn and love.
Congratulations Erika! I've only been Vegan for a couple of years but, like you, there's definitely no going back. It's the only way to be!

Im Tina (or nice dream, sorry im a crazed, manic, obsessed radiohead fan, nothing to do with the rice milk as someone else suggested lol), new to this board but not new to veggie life. Went veggie about the age of 14 and decided about a year and half ago now to take it that next step up and go vegan.
I just joined care2.com and am really impressed with the site and the community. I became a piscetarian in 1990, moved to vegetarianism a few years after that with a brief stint as a raw foodist, been a vegan since 2003, and just recently returned to eating mostly raw foods. It's been a great and profound journey.
I was going to die of heart attack from fatally high cholesterol and obesity but turned vegan and was completely healed, with my weight plummeting down to normal and my cholesterol count to low normal.
Hello all! I am Tiffany, aka Mystic I'm 37 and about 13 years ago I was vegitarian for almost 5 years, until I met my husband lol. I have done some fasting and a stint of 5 days raw since then. I am 90-95% raw for over a month now & I quit smoking! I am hoping to meet others who are on a path to vibrant health and if anyone here needs a friend, im open & here anytime Thanks for having this group! I was almost giving up as the other raw groups I found were inactive here at care2. Peaceful blessings~Mystic

Hi all i have been a vegetarian for 20 years now. though i still eat fish and oysters about once a month and use butter on rare occasions so im not a strict vegan
A little known fact i like to pass along is that it takes 1 acre of land to feed a vegetaian and 100 to feed a meat eater.
Ive been to the jungles of Costa Rica and have seen the forests being devistated. You can actually see the clear cutting from the air. Something like %10 of the country is owned by companies and private land owners that sell meat to resellers. Most of this makes it to the US. I spent a week in the jungle and its sooo depressing to know how quickly that rain forest is being cut for pasture. its SOOO beautiful... at least whats left to it. video from Meat.org
Information for Brad in the above comment. There is a company called Monavie that is helping to preserve the rainforest. It is called Monavie. Monavie is a nutritional supplement juice with a blend of 19 fruits and the acai berry is the main fruit.
The people in the Amazon have been getting paid .50 cents for every heart of the palm they cut. When they do that, it kills the trees. Monavie is paying these people more by growing and harvesting the acai berry. By doing this it is helping to save the forest. On top of that they are giving back to the people by helping the homeless children in the MORE project.
I am trying to create a group for Monavie but have no idea what I am doing. Any suggestions and help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance. http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/AcaiBerry

HI VEGAN FRIENDS!vegan for 20 years AND LEATHER AND FUR FREE!
Hi everyone! I see no one has posted in a while so I hope to get a response. I am new to this and have been raw for only 1 week. I am keen to learn all I can about achieving excellent health and vitality and to do as little harm as possible to the creatures we share our planet with.
Has anyone got any good tips on how to stay raw and simple recipes.
Hi Everyone,
I've only just found this site today, it's really great.
I have been a vegetarian for around 25 years, and a Vegan for 2 years.
Take care,
Julie

I have not been on in a while and like wise i was vegan for over a year then went back. I am vegan again almost a month now and am very happy about it. I feel better physicaly, mentaly, and well my soul is telling me its the right thing to do. The one constant in my life is change but I hope to end that. I feel so much better with no negativity in my conscious. And I have been reading everyones posts and I see I am not alone. That helps a lot. Thank all of you for being here and for being vegan. Not many people around me understand it and this makes it all better. Namaste Michael
I've sort of trying to become at least a vegetarian. It's hard shopping these days. Being on a low income, I don't eat very well. And I've gotten so use to meat, giving it up sounds almost horried. Pray for me so that I can start thinking about others, not just myself.
I'm trying to take that first step. Today I went shopping, and just about killed my budget. But I made sure that I at least got SOME fresh fruit and vegetables. One thing I got was some of those "baby" carrots. They're real good steamed. With just a bit of mayo to dip them in. I haven't checked out the vegan type of mayo, but one day I just might get brave enough to try it.
It Doesn't Have to Cost a Lot to be a Vegan May 03, 2008 5:00 AM
Congrats for your first step, Christine
Yes, I know it seems like those fresh veggies are a bit expensive. But once you take meat, milk, eggs, cheese etc off your grocery list you will find you have a lot more money for veggies!
Actually, if you are willing to be a little adventurous in the kitchen, you can live quite cheaply as a vegan.
For instance, that vegan mayo you are talking about can cost quite a bit ready made, but you can make your own at home. It is not difficult and it saves a lot of money.
Thanks. I have to admit that my food bill is going up. Just Thursday I spent $98 at Walmarts. The only "non food" items that I got were Cat food and Kitty litter. And I still don't have enough to get through until mid month when I get payed again. Of course, I can,and will, be get more groceries. No matter how much I watch my spending, it always seems like I have little to show for it!!
My name is Lisa and I'm from Sydney, Australia. I've been vegan since 1st of June 2008 and before that, I was lacto-ovo vegetarian for just over a year.
Hi to everyone in the group. I am so glad to be finding more and more vegan poeple. I am not totally vegan I think, because I still use some food items that have animal products in them, like chocolate. I went veg, trying to be totaly vegan in July of 2008. I am so upset over the animals being used for food, that I have been in a panic all summer trying to convert friends and family to the veg lifestyle. I have ended up with more enemies than converted meat eaters. I can not believe how touchy poeple are about eating meat. No matter how diplomatic or carefully you aproach a meat eater they become very offended at you for suggesting they don't eat meat. It used to be religion people got so touchy over, now I truely think it is whether you eat meat or not is the most touchy subject to say away from. Poeple feel very offended and feel that what they eat is thier choice and not anyones business. Even doctors don't stress not eating meat, they will tell you to cut back, they are even bold about stop smoking, but seem afraid to just simply tell you meat is bad for you and to stop eating it. Maybe it is because most doctors still eat meat and believe it is nessary to our diet?
Anyway, I have a question. does anyone know why no advertising is done on the radio or TV about meat not being good for you? I mean if the reports are true that meat causes cancer and other illness, why it is not advertised? The goverment is against cigg and has all kinds of compaigns and no smoking laws. Yet eating meat supposedly has been proven to kill more poeple than cigg. Do the big meat industries control what is advertised that much?
hello. my nick name is spade (even my parents call me that). i have been a vegetarian most of my life which started out as an inability to keet meat down, hence my taste for meat never developed and i have happily been a vegetarian since. later on, as i grew and developed, i began to see the ethical side of what i did and in no way could i turn back now.
some background on me which may help - i am autistic, i have adhd and ocd and considered learning disabled. i often repeat myself and may repeat the same thing if i am not sure it is understood or if i have not stated it clear. i lose words quick and if i talk too long i forget what i was saying. the same applies to emails and stuff. if it goes off topic, i will not know what it was about, so in general i read more than post and listen more than talk. it makes no odds to being a vegan, but might help if you think i am just being annoying or deliberately not getting something.
veganism always interested me but not so much from the point of begin one. i used to criticise it a lot with comments like - surely a cow has to be milked? surely a chicken will always lay eggs? if we buy organic milk and eggs or any other dairy products then it will be alright? i dont know if i am wrong or right on that but i just left it there.
so two things happened. first off i am finally getting the house i live in together and having a proper kitchen which means no more having to eat microwave stuff and all that. i have no skill in cooking which is the same for most things - not bright or talented, just me and that doesnot amount to much but is ok by me. i want to improve so when i get the new kitchen i will have a lot of new stuff so that i can learn to cook and experiment more. try new things and even make my own stuff using ingredients and whatever.
second thing is i watched a program where a vegan made food for other people. i watched what she did and how it all turned out and it did seem nice. i am unsure how i would go about not drinking milk and using eggs but i am willing to be open and learn. i have joined the vegan society in the uk and sent for some books from amazon so i can read over what it is all about.
if anybody wants to reply and tell me more or help me understand some of it would be good. i am not here to annoy others but to learn and get to grips with it. the program i watched that i wrote - the person on it did explain about animal cruelty but i didnt think that happened with just dairy stuff? i do buy organic and always buy ethical where it is available. if i am wrong please tell me so i can understand it myself.
thanks for everybodys time and letting me join spade
My name is Cecilia and I've been vegetarian for the last two years, thank you for the welcome. I just want to say that I'm REALLY happy that finally I can look a chiken (or a cow) in the eye and NOT feel guilty about it. This is the CHOICE of my life and I'm working to become a vegan one day. My only weakness are chocolate and cheese, but I'm working on it.
Hello! I became vegetarian when I was almost 11. It was a struggle for me because I was not ready for it, and my family was not all too supportive. But I made it. Then, New Year's of 2008, I became vegan. My family still does not really support me, but my father buys me vegan foods sometimes. I am almost 14, and I think I am pretty healthy. I certainly have not gotten sick quite as much as when I ate meat. I hope to make vegan friends soon!

You are a very brave and mature young lady, to make the switch all by yourself while living with meat eaters, and being just a teenager. Major kudos to you!
My name is Bill. I am a pro life Vegan. i joined this group because that is how it is tagged. Being pro life and Vegan is a very unique niche these days.
I was a vegetarian for over 15 years before becoming a vegan in 2005. I live in New York City and manage the Vegans in New York City meetup and facebook groups.
Please check us out there if you live in the metro area!
