End The Brutal Treatment Of Sri Lankan Elephant Mihiri
6 years ago

IDA often learns of dire situations for elephants around the world, and with your help we have been able to make a difference for them. We’re now asking you to speak up for Mihiri, a seven-year-old elephant at the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage in Sri Lanka, who suffers multiple wounds believed to be the result of brutal training. Recent photos show gaping gashes on her feet and painful lesions on her face and head, likely caused by chaining and use of the bullhook.

Mihiri was born at Pinnewala, which cares for orphaned elephant calves from the wild and also breeds elephants. The elephants are habituated to humans and receive enough training so they can be managed. However, Mihiri’s training appears to be more intense and may indicate that she will be transferred to another site or even out of the country.

Stop the Selling of Michigan's Animals for Research! >>

Your voice will make an important difference.

Forward to friends >>

Hi Phyllis,

Right now in Michigan, shelter cats and dogs can be bought for experimental research. The animals are then euthanized.

Support Michigan House Bill 4663 to eliminate pound seizure in Michigan animal shelters >>

Companion animals depend on humans for their safety and well-being. Tragically, this dependency is betrayed when shelters allow these pets to be taken by Class B Dealers for resale to research.

When Class B dealers (animal brokers) and research facilities can obtain cats and dogs from animal shelters, it diminishes the shelters' credibility and purpose, and betrays public trust.

We have a chance to change this. Please sign today to support Michigan House Bill 4663 >>

Thank you for helping animals today.

Dear Ms. Pleasants,

On Monday and Tuesday, live sheep are scheduled to be used and then killed in a trauma training course at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. We need your help to end this unnecessary and cruel practice.

Mass General may be one of the nation’s best hospitals, but it is woefully behind the times when it comes to teaching Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATL. Across the nation, more than 90 percent of ATLS courses are taught using only human-based simulators, which Mass General currently owns.

Please call, e-mail, or write a letter to Massachusetts General Hospital president Peter L. Slavin, M.D., and politely ask him to end animal use in the institution’s ATLS program. Then forward this message to your friends who care about animals and effective medical education. Being polite is the most effective way to help these animals. Send an automatic e-mail.

Peter L. Slavin, M.D.
Massachusetts General Hospital
55 Fruit St.
Boston, MA 02114
Tel: 617-724-9300

Mass General owns the American College of Surgeons-approved simulator known as the TraumaMan System. The hospital uses the simulator to teach ATLS surgical skills to medical students while using live sheep to teach the very same procedures to practicing physicians.

On May 14, PCRM filed a formal request with Mass General’s Subcommittee on Research Animal Care asking that it deny the use of animals in the hospital’s ATLS program.

The letter cites an ongoing survey by PCRM, which has so far received responses from 201 ATLS programs in the United States and Canada. The survey has found that 187 of those programs (more than 90 percent) exclusively use nonanimal models for instruction. The vast majority of those 187 programs exclusively use the TraumaMan System.

Learn more about the TraumaMan System. If you have any questions, please contact me at Thanks so much for your help!

Dear Phyllis,

In the next few weeks, the U.S. Forest Service plans to reopen a

road that runs through the heart of grizzly bear habitat in

Wyoming's Sweetwater Valley.

Please go to and urge the

Forest Service to keep the road permanently closed.

With encroaching development on nearby lands, the Sweetwater

Valley -- inside the Shoshone National Forest -- has become a

secure oasis for threatened and imperiled wildlife.

In the eight years that the road has been closed, an abundance

of wildlife has thrived here, including grizzly bears, wolves,

lynx, cougars and moose.

In fact, grizzlies that have just come out of hibernation are

grazing right now on grass and other plants found in the valley.

There is no rationale for the Forest Service's proposal to

reopen the road, which leads nowhere and has languished for

years. Reopening the road would only disturb and threaten the

Sweetwater Valley's wilderness and wildlife.

Please go to right away and

urge the Forest Service to leave the road closed. Time is

running out, as forest officials plan to reopen the road in the

next few weeks.

Thank you for taking action to protect our remaining western

The Clock Is Ticking

The Obama administration only has until May 9th to reverse Bush/Cheney changes that threaten vital protections for polar bears and other vulnerable wildlife.

Urge Interior Secretary Salazar and Commerce Secretary Locke to reverse the Bush/Cheney assault on Endangered Species Act protections for our wildlife.

Help send a loud, clear message to the Obama administration. Forward this message to a friend and help us send 40,000 messages in support of our imperiled wildlife before the May 9th deadline.

Dear Phyllis,

U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke have little more than one week to set right one of the Bush/Cheney administration’s most disastrous decisions on wildlife -- and we need your help to ensure that they do the right thing and restore key protections for polar bears, wolves and other imperiled wildlife.

Please send Interior Secretary Salazar and Commerce Secretary Gary Locke a message right now urging them to reverse the Bush/Cheney administration’s last-minute assault on Endangered Species Act protections for polar bears, wolves and other imperiled wildlife.

Before leaving office, the Bush administration rammed through regulatory changes to the Endangered Species Act that threaten efforts to save polar bears, wolves, manatees and more than 1,300 other species from extinction.

If left in place, these changes will...

Prevent the Endangered Species Act from protecting our vanishing polar bears from global warming, which would effectively allow America's threatened polar bears to drown in a sea of inaction; and

Let federal agencies in charge of building highways, dams and other projects decide whether those projects might drive rare plants and animals toward extinction, without ever checking with the expert biologists in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service.

Defenders of Wildlife -- and caring wildlife supporters like you -- fought hard in Congress for legislation that gives Secretaries Salazar and Locke the authority to overturn these rules. Now it’s up to Secretaries Salazar and Locke to use this hard-fought authority before it expires on May 9th.

Only 12 days remain to reverse the Bush/Cheney assault on Endangered Species Act protections for our wildlife. Please send your message right now!

More than 200,000 comments opposing the changes were submitted to the Interior Department in the 60 days that the Bush/Cheney administration allowed for the public to respond to its changes. And newspapers across the country have editorialized overwhelmingly against the Bush/Cheney administration’s gutting of Endangered Species Act protections.

Nonetheless, these regulations are now in place, and each day they remain in effect our polar bears and other vulnerable species are being placed at greater risk of extinction.

The good news is that a stroke of the pen by Secretary Salazar and Secretary Locke can restore Endangered Species Act protections for the polar bear and other endangered wildlife. The bad news is that neither secretary has taken action yet.

Use your voice to restore protections for our vulnerable wildlife. Encourage Secretaries Salazar and Locke to use the power that Congress gave them to protect the lives of our imperiled wildlife.

For the Wild Ones,

Rodger Schlickeisen

Defenders of Wildlife
P.S. Congress gave Interior Secretary Salazar and Commerce Secretary Locke until May 9th to undo the damage the Bush/Cheney administration inflicted on polar bears and other endangered wildlife. Please send your message today.

Court Date for Man Accused of Killing Neighbor's Basset Hound

On Tuesday, April 7, Christopher Dewayne Delawder of Odenville, Alabama will be brought before St. Clair County Civil Court in Ashville, Alabama on the felony animal cruelty charges after being accused of killing "Babyboy," a 14-month-old Basset Hound belonging to his neighbor, Terri L. Davis.

Delawder, 28, initially denied to police that he had shot the dog, only to confess a few hours later after contacting a lawyer. He claims to have shot Babyboy because the dog had wandered onto his property and in his opinion posed a threat to his pet cats.

On June 28, 2008, a neighbor went to Ms. Davis' house to tell her that Babyboy was laying in the road, injured. Babyboy, a docile dog, who was usually kept inside Ms. Davis' house, had gotten loose from the back yard and wandered down the street.

Ms. Davis lives four houses down from Delawder. By the time she reached her dog, he was dead, but he had lived for at least five agonizing minutes after being shot in the spine. The veterinarian who performed the autopsy on Babyboy said that the nature of his injury was such that he would've been unable to walk after being shot. Babyboy was found heading towards Ms. Davis' home, 40 feet away from Mr. Delawder's driveway and off his property.

While no one witnessed the shooting, a large crowd of neighbors, many of them children, witnessed the dog's convulsive dying minutes. Delawder, who at the time claimed not to know what had happened, offered to get his gun from his home and "put the dog out of its misery." Neighbors were struck by Delawder's lack of emotion during the incident.

Ms. Davis was so traumatized by finding her dog shot dead that she went into shock and required care from EMS on the scene. Her daughters, Rebecca, now 13, and Courtney, now 14, were also scarred by the loss of their beloved pet and family member.

The local law enforcement and legal system proved of little help. Police confiscated Delawder's gun but did not arrest him. Davis says that the District Attorney seemed in no hurry to investigate her case. She was not allowed to give her side of the story to the DA until September 4, 2008, over two months after Babyboy's death. The DA declined to pursue a criminal action on the grounds of a lack of witnesses.

Ms. Davis was seriously ill from October through December, but filed a civil suit in December. Officials with St. Clair County briefly lost the paperwork.

As there has never been a jury trial held in Odenville, the case will be heard in the county seat of Ashville.

Several people have reported and are willing to testify in court that at least 12 of their dogs have been stolen, injured, or killed during the seven year period Delawder has lived in their neighborhood. Ms. Davis recently found a stray puppy poisoned and dead on her property.

During a verbal altercation with a neighbor Delawder threatened to kill the man's pets. Some time afterward the man snooped around Delawder's property and found a mixture of dog food and ground-up glass, though he did not at the time report this to the authorities.

On a different occasion another neighbor contacted police after an autopsy proved that their dog died after ingesting a dog food and glass mixture.

Ms. Davis states that she has never had any conflict with Delawder and that their contacts have always been civil.

Ms. Davis can provide the names of witnesses and other parties listed in this report.

Ms. Davis currently does not have an attorney. She and her friends are trying to generate local, national, and international interest in the press about the case.

The Sifton Bog used to be on the outskirts of the city, but now of course the city has grown around it and the deer have flourished. So of course now there are too many, vegetation ruined etc. blah blah blah. I am fine that they want to remove some deer but... A. do they need to kill them and B. why do they have to use bows if they do. I just hate this! I used to mountainbike through the bog, it's so beautiful.

Bow hunting is among the cruelest forms of hunting. Many deer who are shot are merely wounded by the arrow. Bow hunters routinely spend hours tracking the blood trails of deer struck by arrows before the animals finally bleed to death. In fact, three decades of research tells us that for every one or two deer struck by arrows and retrieved by bow hunters, another wounded deer disappears, never to be found.

Please help shut down all animal "kill shelters" nationally by signing this online Petition here.

Or click on this link please:

It's a stated fact that gas chambers funded by the government and your tax payer dollars are used to kill off pets nationwide. Gassing is violently cruel and tortuous way to kill a pet and it takes one hour of cruel torture to finally end a pet's life. If you ever saw the gassing process you may be horrified to hear the poor dogs and cats crying and suffering at prolonged lengths. It is a known fact that Hitler used the same process in the Holocaust to kill off millions of innocent Jewish peoples as well. This process is evil and barbaric. Other full options available to pet shelters today are daily public adoption sessions which are proven ways to get pets into good homes instead of into a pile of bodies. Shelters need to go out five or six days a week to public facilities and traffic filled corners with those dogs and cats to let the public know that pets are available. These adoption sessions work every time. Instead of using tax payer monies for expensive and inhumane killing methods that Country can use adoption instead which would save millions of dollars and also upgrade people's ethical stature. Instead of being the cruel and unconsciousable people - the Nation becomes a more ethical and humane people with kindness its key ingredient. There are no worthy reasons to just "kill off" pet populations. With real effort America can become a NO KILL SHELTER that respects life and takes care of it instead of just killing it off.

Dear Phyllis,

All six species of sea turtles that swim in U.S. waters are listed under the Endangered Species Act, but that doesn't mean they are safe from fishermen. Believe it or not, many of our country's trawl fisheries accidentally injure and kill sea turtles by entangling them in their massive nets.

Fortunately, there's a way to prevent it. It's called a Turtle Excluder Device - or TED - and it's an "escape hatch" that allows a sea turtle to wiggle out of the trawl net, relatively unharmed. While some fisheries use TEDs, too many do not, and are not required to.

We need your help to convince the government to protect these ancient creatures by requiring TEDs in all trawl fisheries in the U.S. Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico that operate in areas with sea turtles.
Help Save Sea Turtles
Protect Sea Turtles from Trawls »

Let me back up - more than 15 years ago, the government took steps to protect sea turtles by requiring the use of TEDs in shrimp and summer flounder trawl fisheries. Studies show that properly used TEDs can lead to a 97 percent reduction in sea turtle net entrapment. Many trawl fisheries catch sea turtles but the shrimp and summer flounder trawl fisheries are the only ones with TED requirements.

The scale of this problem can be seen in the Mid-Atlantic - approximately 770 sea turtles are caught each year in the Mid-Atlantic bottom trawl fisheries leaving hundreds of turtles dead or severely injured, yet only one fishery in this region is required to use TEDs and those TEDs have proven to be too small.

Still not convinced? July 28 marked the 30th anniversary of the loggerhead sea turtle's addition to the Endangered Species Act. But not only have loggerhead populations failed to recover in the last three decades, they continue to decline. Disturbingly, loggerhead nesting in Florida has declined by 50 percent during the past 10 years.

Sea turtles need better protection from trawl fisheries, and if the government is not going to require fishermen to pull their fishing gear when turtles are likely to be present, the answer is appropriately-sized TEDs along with adequate enforcement and observer coverage. We simply can't sit and watch as these creatures, which have been around for millions of years, go extinct. Please take action today by telling the government to protect sea turtles from trawls.

NY Post Columnist Says Beaten Cat Deserved to Die! Petition

This woman is a Monster, please take a moment to sign the petition, send a letter, and crosspost this to help gain signatures. Thank you

There is a case going on now in the Manhattan Courts
concerning a man who brutally beat and killed his girlfriends
cat in a drunken, jealous rage. You can read all about it and
sign the petition against the cat-killer here;

Meanwhile, New York Post columist Andrea Peyser wrote an
article about this case, stating her belief that the cat "deserved
every blow he got" and called the prosecution of the cat-killer a
"waste of time and tax-payers money." You can read Andrea's
cold-hearted article here;

We are petitioning the NY Post and its owners,
"News Corporation," to let them know that the kind of
callous indifference Andrea Peyser's article portrays does
not reflect well on the newspaper or the company that owns it.
We want to remind them that animal cruelty
is no laughing matter and that we need to take these
sort of crimes seriously. Studies show there is a direct link
between animal abusers and violent crimes against people.

We think Andrea Peyser should be FIRED for suggesting
that an innocent animal deserved to be beaten for any
reason as sends a wrong message to readers that animal
abuse is "tolerable," or "ok" to have in a civilized society -
Talk about bad press! Your paper  would be better off without
writers who openly "expouse" or support animal cruelty in
any form,.....
after all, it is against the law, and for good reason,  it is morally,
ethically and legally WRONG!  Shame on Andrea for writing such a
heartless article, and shame on The New York Post & News
Corporation for allowing it.

The New York Post has been criticized for what many consider
its lurid headlines, sensationalism, blatant advocacy and
conservative bias. In 1980, the Columbia Journalism Review
asserted that "the New York Post is no longer merely a
journalistic problem. It is a social problem - a force for evil."

"The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged
by the way its animals are treated" - Ghandi

"I care not for a mans religion whos dog or cat
