September 4th 2006 Steve Lost His Life September 04, 2009 3:39 PM

The good always die young

Steve's song already sung

His cry for conservation and preservation

Can still be heard from far and near

His love for wildlife he held so dear.

Steve loved his "crocs" with all his might

As he fought everyday and every night

For their rights....

What were the magic ingredients Steve Irwin had that made him internationally known and loved… and how can you apply some of that magic to your business? Three things come to mind immediately.

“Crikey!”

The first is enthusiasm. Boundless enthusiasm. Loud and obnoxious enthusiasm. He exuded it. He screamed it. He blabbed his message at the top of his lungs to whomever he could get to listen. If you were surfing by his channel, there’s no way you weren’t going to know he was out catching Crocs at that very moment! Big ferocious Crocs! Crocs so big and wild they could break you in half! Crikey! Crocs RULE! I found myself watching his show for no other reason than that he demanded it. His enthusiasm and showmanship demanded – and got – your attention.

The second secret ingredient was true passion. Once you watched for a little bit, you realized that this guy was no actor faking sensational stunts. He may have been faking sensational stunts for entertainment value, but behind the Crocodile Hunter’s corny G’day Mate veneer was a committed environmentalist whose love for big, dangerous, misunderstood reptiles, wildlife in general and whose dedication to teaching the world about them was as genuine as it gets. Here was a guy so passionate about what he does that people couldn’t help but listen.

Steve Irwin wasn’t the son of a millionaire. He didn’t have a Harvard MBA, Hollywood connections or political influence. But he provided something that the American public is starving for: Enthusiasm. Passion. A living example of somebody who gives a damn about something.

That’s what your employees want from you. That’s what your franchisees and prospective franchisees want from you. That’s what your customers want from you. Grab their attention with your enthusiasm. Motivate them with your passion and mission to be the best. And while you might not get a state funeral any time soon (hopefully), if you can sustain that enthusiasm and passion you will rise above your mediocre and mundane competition and achieve success undreamed of by the common and the careful. Crikey!
