"[The buffalo] have a lone advocate -- The Buffalo Field Campaign. This diverse group of volunteers led by founder Mike Mease, comes from all walks of life...Working day and night, they patrol the Yellowstone border by ski and snowshoe in extreme conditions, coming face to face with danger at every turn, from temperamental buffalo to angry ranchers and government officials to jail time. They will risk everything, including their lives, to protect these animals from certain destruction for doing what they have done for hundreds of years: roaming freely.

Newly nominated Park Service Director Jon Jarvis "should begin by replacing Suzanne Lewis, the superintendent of Yellowstone, who is doing the legacy work of the Bush administration…"
-- New York Times editorial, July 14, 2009

Read the editorial in it's entirety HERE.

Dear Buffalo friends, pray that Suzanne Lewis and all enemies of the bison are replaced in their positions.   People like her should not be allowed to make decisions as they all favor the cattle and cattle ranchers.  OUT WITH LEWIS!!

* BFC Volunteer Cabin Needs 2 On-Demand Hot Water Heaters
5 years ago
The BFC main cabin, which houses our volunteers, could use two on- demand hot water heaters in order to save energy and space. These energy efficient water heaters could shave 25% off our gas bill each month. Also they will allow us room to make another bathroom, so our volunteers don't have to form a waiting line to use our current one bathroom.

If you can help, please make a
secure online donation and specify that it is for the water heaters, or send a check or money order (no cash please) to BFC-Maintenance, P.O. Box 957, West Yellowstone, MT 59758.

If you have questions or would like more detail, please contact BFC Maintenance Coordinator Chip by phone at 406-646-0070 or by
email.

Thank you!!

"We are here once again to pray for the Pte Oyate, the four-legged relatives that have perished in Yellowstone and for the little ones born here into suffering... Let it be known that the habitat of the wild buffalo is sacred ground, a SACRED SITE for the Lakota, for all native people, and for all humanity who hold reverence for Creation... With deepest respect for the challenges of leadership, we call upon another relative, President Barack Obama, to join us to begin shaping a Nation-to-Nation agreement for the Yellowstone buffalo."

~Excerpted from a statement made by Chief Arvol Looking Horse, 19th Generation Keeper of the White Buffalo Calf Pipe, at a May 31, 2009 ceremony held on the Horse Butte Peninsula in honor of wild buffalo.

"Almost anywhere and everywhere you go in the American West you find hordes of [cows].... They are a pest and a plague. They pollute our springs and streams and rivers. They infest our canyons, valleys, meadows, and forests. They graze off the native bluestems and grama and bunch grasses, leaving behind jungles of prickly pear. They trample down the native forbs and shrubs and cacti. They spread the exotic cheatgrass, the Russian thistle, and the crested wheat grass. Weeds. Even when the cattle are not physically present, you see the dung and the flies and the mud and the dust and the general destruction. If you don't see it, you'll smell it. The whole American West stinks of cattle."

Oh my gosh!   I cannot believe those 'stockgrowers' can claim that the beautiful bison are not as sanitary as cattle!   What arrogant jerks they are!   Thanks Eva for posting.

Julia, how did the meeting go?  I pray they didn't extend the boundaries so that the bison have even less areas to roam.

I cannot understand how these greedy #@$% have the nerve or rights to say that the millions of bison that once roamed this earth have no rights to be there now and that they are not clean!   What about our rights as bison lovers and protectors?  Are the cattle barons the only ones with rights??

Also, Horse Butte is private lands and those people want to allow bison to roam on their lands so why does the IBMP and other agencies have any rights at all to dictate what the residents of Horse Butte allow to roam on their lands.  THIS IS SO UNCONSTITUTIONAL and it looks as if the CROOKS are winning.

WE WILL NOT GIVE UP ON THE BISON ~ OUR FIGHT CONTINUES TO GIVE THEM THEIR RIGHTS BACK!

Thank you Julia and Eva for your articles.  If anyone has updates please post them.

Slaughter Bill 337

All friends and supporters of the Yellowstone Bison Herd are invited:  Tomorrow at 3:00 pm, rm 335 at the Capitol in Helena, MT, will be a hearing on SB337.  (The committee members all look like white men left over from the 1800's.)  The official short title of the bill is "Revise laws governing bison--re: translocation of quarantined bison."  They're expanding further extermination of the last of the bison. (All other herds are beefallo.)  For the complete text of the bill, go to http://laws.leg.mt.gov/laws09/LAW0203W$BSRV.ActionQuery?P_BLTP_BILL_TYP_CD=SB&P_BILL_NO=337&P_BILL_DFT_NO=&P_CHPT_NO=&Z_ACTION=Find&P_SBJ_DESCR=&P_SBJT_SBJ_CD=&P_LST_NM1=&P_ENTY_ID_SEQ=

The Last Wild Buffalo in Montana, 1882

* Last Words *

"The summer after I came out Mr. Alderson killed the last buffalo ever seen in our part of Montana.  A man staying with us was out fishing when he saw this lonesome old bull wandering over the hills and gullies above our house--the first live buffalo seen in many months.  He came home and reported it, saying: 'Walt, why don't you go get him?'  And next morning Mr. Alderson did go get him.

That afternoon he suggested that we take the spring wagon and go up to where the old bull had fallen.  There he lay in the green brush at the bottom of a draw--the last of many millions--with the bushes propping him up so that he looked quite lifelike.  I had brought my scissors, and I snipped a sackful of the coarse, curly hair from his mane to stuff a pillow with."

*Yellowstone Superintendent Caters to Cowboys, Betrays Buffalo & Native Cultures
Call 307-344-2002!

On July 21, Suzanne Lewis, Superintendent of Yellowstone National Park, took time out of her busy schedule to travel to Helena, Montana and attend a Montana Board of Livestock meeting. Her statement to the Board was carefully prepared and tailored to her audience. It was thick with compromise and lacked the courage and integrity necessary to defend the wild species in her care.

She spoke of the "common heritage" of those in the room, the commonality of "rangers, ranchers, conservationists, and sportsmen" yet not once did she mention the First Nations buffalo cultures, or address any Native American concerns or interests and how the destruction of the wild buffalo is affecting anyone other than the livestock industry. How is it that Ms. Lewis was able to make the four-hour trek to Helena to listen to the concerns of cowboys, but could not find the time to attend her own Park's annual so-called consultation meeting with Native American tribes in early June? A meeting where the tribes waxed powerful and eloquent, condemning the Park's status quo and demanding that their voices have at least equal footing as that of the livestock industry.

With the aid of Montana, Yellowstone Superintendent Lewis was responsible this past winter and spring for the largest wild buffalo slaughter since the 1800's. Her words and actions betray the buffalo and Native American buffalo cultures. Under her leadership, Yellowstone continues to ignore all entities that hold no ties to the livestock industry. She is in charge of protecting America's natural, native heritage - not Montana's livestock interests - and she must be held accountable.

Read Superintendent Lewis'
entire statement to the Montana Board of Livestock:
And please call her at 307-344-2002 to remind her that she is supposed to be protecting the bison and other wild creatures of Yellowstone, not the livestock of Montana.

* "Let Buffalo Roam" License Plates for Every State

American bison once spanned the continent, 50 million strong, making their home in nearly all 50 states for over 10,000 years.  One way people across the land of the wild buffalo can show support for their return is to make a statement with Montana's new 'Let Buffalo Roam' license plates. Official plates are available for Montana residents, and anyone outside of Montana can get sample plates to let everyone know you think Montana should let the buffalo roam!   Your purchase of plates goes directly towards BFC's front lines work.

Learn how to get yours here.  When you get your plates, send us a photo and we will consider it for Photo of the Week, and will post them on our web site to show the growing support across the land for wild buffalo being free to roam!

* COMMENT:  Montana Buffalo Hunt Planned for 2008-2009

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks Commission has decided to go ahead with the exact same bison hunt as last season.  The state has still not provided any year-round habitat for wild bison in Montana, and they are still aggressively and lethally "managed" by the Montana Department of Livestock, the agency that is also authorizing the hunt.  Fewer than 2,100 wild American bison currently exist and they will be under the gun again this winter.

TAKE ACTION FOR THE BUFFALO!  Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is accepting public comments through July 18, and they need to hear from you!  Please click here to submit your comments today and please spread the word to save the herds!!!
