i don't know what i'm looking for but i'll know it when i see it. i'm at a point where i am moving more towards meditation and combining stretches, yoga, strengthening and other exercises for a full body work out. i've practiced yoga for many years but i'd like to go deeper with it somehow.

Hi Everyone,
In addition to the exercise where you lye down on your stomach and push up in a Push-up sort of way with your chest getting higher and going backward a little, which other yoga exercises do you recommend to strengthen the back muscles?
Thanks, Mongi. I appreciate your honesty and offer to share articles that are of interest to you. I'm looking forward to seeing some articles in the future!
I need to be honest and admit, to write about yoga or participate in the threads here is not my strong suit, but it´s true, --and not just to talk nice-- am glad to´ve come across this group that got me back on the mat, as I said the other day; in short I do read the postings and love to see some views that think alike, often most positive...Am sure though, if I find some interesting article here when surfing about, I´ll copy and paste it.

An intellectual practice? Interesting... could you expand on that, Thomas?
If it's a long explanation that others may be interested in, feel free to start a separate topic for that. Thanks.

Take your time with your research and reporting back. The thread can wait until you're ready for it. In the meantime, it's there in case others are familiar with the topic and can contribute.

Am I an idiot or what? So Dawna went and made a whole "sense control" thread. OK, I guess I've got my work cut out for me. Fortunately there are a lot of people here in India who seem to know something about this so I should be able to come up with something.

I'm looking for more information about the importance of sense control and continence in the male in yoga.

Hi Marissa! I put your question in its own thread - there are probably a lot of people who want to start and don't know where to go or how to get going.
hi I am looking for more information about yoga and how to really get started. I would also like to find a friend who can go through this process of learning with me....

Neo, great question. I'm putting this in its own thread.
I am looking for like-minded people; I am always open to learning about how yoga has affected others.
For me, yoga and meditation have made a huge difference in my life. If I were to be diagnosed, I would probably be border-line ADHD, and I've always been all over the place - dabble in a lot of things, concentrate on nothing, anxiety attacks, never really finishing anything. Yoga and meditation have helped be to stay more in the present, to concentrate on the here and now.
Cathy, that's very good advice. I'm struggling to begin a home yoga practice after being away from the mat for about a year now... I miss it and know it would do me a lot of good, but am unsure how to make this space yoga-friendly and make me feel comfortable doing a practice in my living room.
I think a thread was started in the past on home practice... will have to revive it, I think.

Don't worry about starting over; it's easy. Start with 5 or 10 minutes a day simply doing what feels good to you at the time. If you'd like just do some basic sun salutations, which are a really good stretch, and utilize your ujuyai breath to bring you into the moment and out of your head.
Some way to connect with people to help get me restarted in yoga since I've been out of it for several years, about 5, but had practiced semi regularly most of my life. Now life has swamped me and time is too precious for me to do this daily. Mainly, though its my attitude towards yoga that has suffered due to depression and ptsd from a violent encounter. Now I need to find peace with yoga and its associated parameters. Hard to explain totally as this is highly personal for me. I definately don't want pictures since I have yoga cards delivered to my email. Thanks.
Hi everyone. I arrived here a few days ago and what I was hoping for were pictures of your members in yoga positions with descriptions of how they are benefiting from the positions. How often, how long, how to begin and end, history and suggestions for beginners are what I was hoping to find....Am I totally lost?.......smile.....Rick

What an I looking for in this group? Info and like minded people mostly. I'm not new to meditation but am new to yoga. I am just starting to get active after many years of debilitating Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and FM. I was bed bound for many years because of CFS/FM and chronic back pain but am now less so, although I am still almost housebound. I have been reading about Ayurevedic medicine and got interested in yoga through that. Despite being about as supble as a plank of wood but, I am enjoying the exprience of moving and using my body in this way. It seemed a natural progression to join a group of like mind people. At the moment I don't feel I have either the knowlegde or the expreince to contribute much to the group but I am loving learning more about this wonderful subject. I have a short daily yoga and mediatation routine that I am deeply enjoying, and look forward to being well enough to get out to a yoga class.
I am 47 yrs old with progressive MS and Fibromylagia. I know that I would be better for doing yoga or pilates but all the videos and classes I can find are too much. I even tried videos for over 50 or inflexible peoplel. Still too much. Does anyone know of a company that makes videos for people with a MS or some other type of disability?

I joined this group because I have practiced yoga sporadically for some time and am constantly encouraging myself to practice more regularly. I guess just looking for a place to read about others experiences, be able to ask for specific advice when I need it, and maybe find some new positions.

Pretty new to yoga, coming from a religion based background, grew up an athlete. Now I've injured my knees, traveled, lived abroad, and believe we are one spiritually. I once had an amazing yoga/meditation experience with a Brazilian teacher & have renewed practice. With yoga, I feel balanced, challenged, and grounded, and I love that I have SO much to learn. I'm here to learn.

I am looking for people who are knowledgeable about yoga, kriya in specific. I feel it is what I have been looking for now for a long time. But also just connection with anyone who is open minded and knows about or is interested in yoga. I also respect meditation and actually practice meditation. I have not yet started yoga but hope to soon. namaste Michael

i think i'm looking for connection with others with a similar worldview. i am a committed christian, but think many are misguided in the way they manage stress, their bodies, illness, and interaction with the world. the instructors at my local yoga studio seem to see many things as i do.....unfortunately, illness and my work schedule preclude making it to many classes; most of my practice is solo at home.

I want to learn about teaching in a variety of settings February 04, 2007 5:30 PM
Hi Dawna,
I joined this group to hear from other teachers about the in's and out's of practicing with different populations, in different settings. I teach in yoga studios and healthclubs in a high school with teenagers. In April I start a Yoga class though an employee wellness program. I need to tailor my delivery to meet the client needs and seek to gain a larger scope of practical information in this regard.
I am new to this site and looking to be educated on the subject. I am newly exploring yoga, and hope to embrace th way of living day to day in all facets of my life.

hi there, i joined this group because i would like to learn more about the different types of yoga available. At the moment im just doing the sun salutation every morning but i do it at home and even just this i find hard to motivate myself!!!
i dont have much to input at the momentbut i will try, i am very happy to be a part of this group.
Tana, welcome. My apologies for a delayed response.
There are a few threads set up for stories about your practice, experiences at yoga conferences, how you got into yoga, that kind of thing. If there's a theme that's missing, feel free to start a thread!
Wanda, that was the first book by Lama Surya Das that I read and I really enjoyed it. Learned a lot, too. Another good book is Yoga and the Quest for the True Self by Stephen Cope. It talks about how yoga helped him on his journey of self-discovery and it helped me see how yoga really is more than just an exercise, but a way of life.
There are lots of other books recommended by other Yoga Journeys members in Good Yoga Books.
My adult daughter recently became nationally certified as a yoga instructer. I joined this group because I approve of her decision and want to learn more about what she does. Apparently there are several branches of teaching in yoga. She is learning Tibetans teachings and sent me a book to read....Awakening the Buddhist Heart..........to help me better understand where she is living. I have begun reading this book, but have not gotten very far into it. So far I have found nothing that gives me any concern as her mother. She keeps telling me that this is A WAY OF LIFE....not a religion. Okay, do you hear me any disagreement from me? No. So far the little I have learned does not go against anything I raised her to be or believe. I'm here to expand my knowledge.

I'm new here, and am enjoying reading through old threads and new postings. I haven't seen much about personal experiences and find that while people have very different reasons for having a dedicated yoga practice, there are many inspiring stories to share. I looked to see if there was a thread for Yoga Journey Stories, but didn't find one.

Janet, I'll post your question in a separate thread. Great question!
So let me clarify - what more can this group offer its members? Are you looking for more articles? Or personal experiences? Or resources you can tap into? Or are you satisfied with everything that's here so far?

i wouldn't have said this a week ago, but.... December 04, 2006 9:55 PM
i already know how wonderful yoga is for alleviating some specific types of pain, and for relaxation.
now i need to get some cardio in without impact (arthritic feet). i've tried rodney yee's yoga for athletes, but for some reason can't make it through, even tho i used to do 45 minutes of hard aerobics, no sweat.
What are you looking for? Input please!! December 03, 2006 6:53 AM
It seems that there is a core group who post here, and who comment here, and a lot of people who lurk and listen and read.
For the members who do come here regularly, thank you.
For all Yoga Journeys members, I have a question or few.
What are you looking for from this group?
Are you looking for particular information? Are you looking to share experiences with other members? Are you looking for resources and class suggestions? What would make this group more interesting or helpful for you?
Feedback, please. I'd like to know how to make this group better for everyone!
