But they require political will and some forward thinking. Europe has changed since 1989, and the need for transportation on the Danube will increase. But this does not need to come at a cost of the Danube as a living river and the multitude of benefits and services that it provides all of us. Plan right -- We need to make sure that we have the best solutions, before undertaking irreversible river regulation measures that we may well regret later. Current approaches to promoting shipping on the Danube focus on digging and building first, and then seeing what happens -- a backward approach that makes neither ecological, nor social or economic sense. 2. Use innovation and technology -- We need to look forward and exploit innovation and technology, including new and proven designs for building ships as well as information and communications technology. Current approaches focus on building bigger and bigger ships -- and then fitting the river to the ships. Fitting the ships to the river is less destructive -- and much cheaper. This needs political will and support to change the fleet within the next 15-20 years. 3. Address other bottlenecks -- Many of the bottlenecks to increasing shipping on the Danube are not related to the depth of the river. These include the logistical connections between river, road and rail that permit the smooth transfer of goods from one destination to another, as well as poor availability of longer-time predictions of water levels. Existing capacity for shipping on the Danube is not fully used. The focus should be on removing logistical and other bottlenecks before irreversible changes are made to the river on which we depend. Group History ABOUT THE DANUBE DELTA August 12, 2007 10:50 AM The real surface of the Danube Delta is 4152 sqkm, out of which the greatest part is situated on the romanian territory, respectively 3466 sqkm; has been formed in a gulf starting from the Upper Pleistocene, by creating an offshore bar that had closed it and transformed it into a lagoon. Danube Delta has evoluated in closely connection with three Danubian branches: Sf. Gheorghe, Sulina and Chilia. The Danube Delta maintaining delta's characteristics a plane region. The positive relief forms, called "grinduri", have different genesis: marine levees (Letea, Caraorman, Saraturile, Crasnicol, etc.), riverbanks, continental lands (Chilia, Stipoc). The deltaic space differentiation is a result of time evolution which had determinate the forming of the riverbanks, of the marine levees, of the lakes, streamlets, wetland, respectively of the ecosystems. As a young region in full process of consolidation, the Danube Delta represents a very favorable place for the development of such a flora and fauna - unique in Europe - with numerous rare species. The values of the main climatic parameters are: lowest nebulousness, 70 days with blue sky, 2500 hours/year of sun shining, 125-135 kcal/cm²/year sun radiation, between 11-11,4 °C the average yearly temperature, precipitations between 350-450 mm/year. The aquatic medium is prevalent, so that flora and fauna will be aquatic. The terrestrial medium is also present on which a xerophile flora and an adequate fauna are growing. It's a specific flora and fauna for the east-European steppe with Mediterranean influences. Between these two mediums the swampy, easily flooded medium is interposing, which has a special flora and fauna, with alternative possibilities of adaptation (water, land) depending on the seasonal and yearly hydrological regime. Ychthyofauna dominates the ecosystem of running waters and it's represented by: carp, pike perch, sheat fish, rapacious carp, little sturgeon, sterlet, vyza, Danube mackerel, marine sturgeon, common sturgeon, stor sturgeon. In the lakes there could find species like Tinca, Abramis, Scardinius, Carasssius, Perca, Esox, etc. Birds are giving to the Danube Delta, beside the attractive and characteristic landscape the fame it had gained into the world. Out of 280 bird species it's estimated that 177 species are hatching species and 103 are not; 44 hatching species are sedentary and 133 migratory. The non-hatching species are winter guests and only passing over in spring and autumn. By its geographical origin the birds are belonging to the following types: pontical, sarmathian, Black Sea, east Elba and Carpathian. Among the 280 species of birds, law protects 10 of them; some being declared nature monuments, because they threatened to disappear. The protected birds can be divided in two clusters, by the color of their plumage: white birds (common and Dalmatian pelicans, spoonbill, big and small egrets, silent and singing swan) and polychrome birds (gruidae, wood-pecker, white and red start, white tailed eagle). Another three species focus the scientist's attention in order to be protected: crane, danubian falcon and land's bird. I love pelicans a lot and it is lovely to see so many in one place as I used to when I was a child here in Australia. Our River Murray is nearly dead. In our state at the end here where it goes to the ocean but is scarcely a trickle now and is the main drinking supply for Adelaide, about 1 million people. I am very careful with water and have been concerned for at least the last 20 years but the government has done nothing to save water and now they are calling it a crisis. So I will do all I can to help your cause of course. Water of course is important but so is all the wildlife that lives in peace there. Lach V.	June 29, 2008 2:59 PM Dear Danube friend! Today Hubert von Goisern's 2008 musical tour along the Danube starts with a concert in Obermühl, Upper Austria. It is also the starting point for the second part of WWF's Danube Campaign summer musical program. In 2007 WWF and local partners accompanied Hubert von Goiserns concert ship downstream along the Danube to the East - from its origin in Germany all the way to the Danube Delta in Romania and the Ukraine. The Danube Campaign team joined many of the concerts, informing audiences and the public about the Danube and the threats it faces. WWF also collected signatures for the Save the Danube petition- until now around 60,000 signatures have been collected. This year Hubert von Goisern's journey travels to the West - up the Danube and Rhine all the way to Rotterdam. Together with the German partners "Bund Naturschutz" and "Landesbund für Vogelschutz", WWF will be on board again to collect more signatures for a living Danube. This year's summer along the Danube promises to be as exciting as last year. The Danube Campaign team will of course keep you informed about the concerts and the latest Danube news. The new police force numbers 100 people from the border police and the Romanian Police and it is equipped with “a-two-digit number of very fast boats, helicopters with infrared cameras and thermovision and a flood-light of a 2-km range,” Minister Nica said. ‘It has a very silent helicopter, which can film the poachers from a very long distance, and it provides information to the land police crews that go and catch the trespassers.
