Sign the End the Occupation of Iraq Pledge September 11, 2007 9:44 AM

We, the Undersigned, endorse the following petition:
Sign the End the Occupation of Iraq Pledge
  • Signatures: 15,141
  • Goal: 30,000
  • Deadline: Ongoing...
Our elected officials may not be ready to end the occupation of Iraq - but we are!

There will be pivotal votes on the Iraq war throughout the summer, leading up to General Petraeus' progress report in September. We must be relentless in our pressure on politicians and let them know that the American people will accept nothing less than a timelined withdrawal of US troops from Iraq.

We must be ready to end this occupation ourselves - by exercising our power as citizens. Take our pledge not to vote, volunteer or contribute to any candidate that doesn't support ending the occupation of Iraq.

Resist recruitment September 12, 2007 9:23 AM

Tell everyone who is thinking of enlisting- it is not a matter of either coming home a hero or dying for your country.  This two-option scenario makes enlisting very attractive to young men wanting to make their mark on the world.

Instead, tell them the truth- there are many possible outcomes.

You might die- but not for your country- the Iraq war does nothing for our country except spend it into government bankruptcy (which we won't know about until it is too late)

You might come home- but not necessarily a hero.  Many Iraq vets come home sick, wounded, disabled, troubled, or worse yet, homeless.  Few are treated like heros.  Many come home to broken marriages (too much time apart wrecks the marriage), lost homes, lost businesses, unemployment, emotional problems severe enough to wreck their employability, marriage, family relationships, etc.

A huge number of US soldiers come home disabled- with a long hell ahead, followed by their whole life being permanently altered by disability.  (I know what that entails, I am disabled.)

Many soldiers will be sent back again, and again, and again, and again, and each and every time, the above possibilities are much more likely than coming home a hero.

Worst of all, hundreds of thousands of vets (from Vietnam, Gulf War 91, and this Iraq war) are or will be sick the rest of their lives, often too sick to make a living, which means the rest of your life you will be dependent on others- not the he-man hero life so many new enlistees expect from joining the military.

Tell the people the truth and change will follow!
