From rescuing hundreds of dogs and cats from the streets of Romania,
feeding dogs at Mr. Cenac's shelter, offering free spaying and neutering, 2007 was a
year filled with victories for the street stray dogs and cats in
Romania. We were able to spay/neuter over 1200 animals in Galati, Romania, and helped finance the spay/neuter of over 200 dogs and cats in Arad. We were fortunate enough to have many supplies donated to us from Merial and the Wildlife Center of Virginia, which we inturn shared with many Romanian vets and organizations. Food was donated to Mr. Cenac, thanks to the brilliance of AJ Solomon and Kelly O'Meara! Aura Maratas of Daisy Hope in Bucharest also donated many pounds of much-needed food for Mr. Cenac's dogs.

which American veterinarians volunteered their services to teach
Romanian veterinarians pain-free spay and neuter techniques and to
perform hundreds of spay and neuter procedures together. Many
citizens brought animals to the clinics and as many animals as
possible were provided food, shelter, and veterinary support. A lucky
few were brought to the United States and adopted through shelters,
grateful to us for providing puppies for adoption, and we are eternally grateful to Helen Woodward Animal Center, Berkeley East Bay Humane Society, and Marin Humane Society for their help. Also, a huge thank you to Eva and the Schnuffie team, and to Frances, who went over and beyond the call of duty to save many animals in Romania! But there are many animals in need of our help as the snow and ice blanket Romania.
Without the generous donations of our donors and strong voices of our
advocates, RAR would not be able to advance animal welfare in
Romania. Your support has made a world of difference to the dogs and
cats in Romania.

The latest from Romanian Animal Rescue:
Dr. Jeanne Olson will be leaving Alaska on October 3 to travel to Romania and train numerous vets on pain free surgical techniques and spay/neuter procedures, as well as spaying/neutering hundreds of animals during her 3 week stay. Dr. Olson will be bringing 500 sutures and needles, as well as a pressure cooker to sterilize instruments, instruments, and other supplies that are very difficult to find in Romania.
Thanks to our donor, AJ Solomon, Dr. Olson's flight costs were donated to Romania Animal Rescue!
While in Romania, Dr. Olson will be working in 4 cities and towns:
Galati
Cluj-Napoca (providing training for the NUCA vets)
Buzau*
Buftea (Media Pro Studios)
RAR will be working in coordination with Animed Arad's Claudiu Iosim, who is managing the program in Romania, and is providing transportation and assisting Dr. Olson during her visit to Romania. Claudiu and been remarkable. He has helped to coordinate the program, and has ordered the supplies for Dr. Olson, such as vaccinations, antibiotics, injectible anesthesia, de-wormer. Claudiu will also assist in veterinary procedures, help trap the animals for sterilization, and translate for Dr. Olson. Thanks to our wonderful donation from MERIAL of 2400 doses of Frontline for dogs, we have our external parasite treatment for the dogs covered!!!!
Upon arrival in Bucharest, Dr. Olson will be provided free transportation to her hotel in Bucharest by our wonderful friends at Emerald Auto http://www.emerald-auto.ro. Once again, Alex Caragata from Emerald Auto has offered his company's free service to RAR!!
Dr. Olson will be bringing CD's of surgical sterilizations to give to vets throughout the course of her training. Claudiu Iosim will also be giving CD's of Dr. Marvin Mackey's sterilization procedures. Dr. Olson is putting together a powerpoint demonstration that she will be giving in each city for numerous vets.
A special thanks to Dr. Andreea Sleahtenea who is transporting crates, catch poles, and other supplies from the USA to Romania for RAR!

OMG this news shakes me to the core. Jeza makes a lot of sense in her email. Sad for the victim...also, I worry about the bears. I thought I had a thread for the Belgrade zoo here? I guess I didnt post as I can't find it. I'll have to look for the site and post it. It showed the very sad conditions esp of the bears

Body of young man (Branko Jovanović (22), worker of post office)
was found in the morning when zoo worker (animal feeder Kosta Šain) came near bears.
in cage of two Tibetan bears near the bloody naked body(part of stomack,one leg and face were the parts which bears "eaten" )
police found victims clothing (clothing was not ripped off-it looked like it was throwed separatly, along with shoes... so police suspected that body was thrown into cage after the murder)
and other personal stuff were lying around, two mobile telephones,money...
Suspections are that young man was drunk and fell over the edge.(note: BEER FEST IS HAPPENING ON that same fortress where animals are!!!!)
Bojovic (zoo director) commented that he was horrified with that scene and he felt sick.
but he mentioned that people have to understand that animals are exponates, attraction- and they should not be touched- but people want to be close to them...
P.S.
I saw on B92- reportage (in morning show "Dizanje") - video reporter clearly showed that all bars on cages are old, rusty and almost to fall off..that cages are dirty ,rusty and small.. but no one commented on that..
(pps- there is not so much blood around..if bears killed him, blood should be sporced around...
it must be that someone ditched him in cage...

It's great to see some recovery programs being implemented. When I was young, I remember my mom having a Lynx coat that was given to her by my great aunt. Lynx were popular "fashion victims". She never wore it, and it creeped me out. It got shoved to the back of the closet. What a waste of a beautiful animal.
