Culling has been reinstated due to fears of elephant overpopulation in protected areas and the habitat destruction that too many elephants can cause. But this plan disregards the fact that elephants are extremely intelligent, social creatures with strong family bonds. It is well known that elephants mourn their dead, and killing large numbers of these sensitive creatures is cruel and unethical.
Please urge the South African government to continue exploring non-lethal options for dealing with growing elephant populations.

2. Please write a letter! Your letter could really make a difference. It should be polite and respectful and should outline why you are opposed to the culling of elephants in South Africa. Sample letter & address are below.

Some points you could consider including in your letter:
- The
killing of elephants, whether individuals or family groups, causes deep
distress to these highly intelligent animals. No matter how carefully
and quickly carried out, culling will ultimately result in panic as
elephants watch their families systematically killed in front of them.
Even elephants some distance away from the site of the culling will be
able to detect the distress calls. For those elephants not culled, the
suffering and distress may have lasting effects.

Ivory
is a valuable by-product of elephant culling, which would undoubtedly
be stockpiled following any elephant cull. This could lead to pressure
to lift the ivory trade ban in order that the ivory can be sold.
Indeed, at the CITES meeting this June, some southern African countries
are seeking to lift the ivory trade ban. Many, however, remain
extremely concerned that any relaxation in the ivory trade ban could
lead to widespread poaching, particularly of those elephant populations
which are most vulnerable. See the CITES pages or Will's blog for more information on this.

Recognised
elephant experts have themselves stated that elephant culling is
unacceptable. These experts explain that culling is not a long-term
solution, as elephant populations reduced to artificially low numbers
may increase their breeding rate to compensate. For more

- There
are several non-lethal, humane alternatives, including range expansion
and contraception, which if used in combination, can help mitigate the
perceived current overpopulation of elephants in southern Africa.

Right here in S. Arizona. This is supposed to be one of the top breeders in the country. Six people were arrested, but were let out without bail. Not good. What is good is that the HSUS is on the scene. I doubt that they're going to let this bust just fade away.

As for YouTube... I think the site should treat animal cruelty videos the same way as if a child porn video has been uploaded. There's a petition somewhere it came around again, deadline next month. It only makes sense that if enough people flag (and they add a category for 'illegal), YouTube should in turn keep a record and report it to the authorities then take it down.

Please sign but the purpose is not what I hoped for. I'll look into their COC and procedure for child porn. The problem with the internet is that although postings can be traced, the perpetrators come from many different jurisdictions, some where cruelty to animals is a norm.

I, too, wondered whether flagging an abuse video is the answer. I did flag the one listed below. I see it comes from the UK, as was the one posted the other day, but I don't know what can be done by YouTube or the authorities to track people like this down. I'd be interested to know if YT does keep files on such things, or if they contact authorities in matters such as this. There are so many different kinds of horrid abuse images and videos on the Net, it's really out of control. Sadly, there aren't enough laws and resources to track down and arrest all these *%$#s.
I just saw this comment in another group - and it seems to make sense - horrible though it is to ignore that disgusting filth! What does everyone else think?

Each
winter, 80,000 - 100,000 people visit the Crystal River National
Wildlife Refuge to snorkel and dive with endangered manatees, and
thousands more go to swim with manatees in the Blue Waters area of the
Homosassa River.
Inevitably, many of these visitors want to
touch the manatees or interact with them in some way. Manatees are
protected under the Endangered Species Act, so grabbing them, feeding,
surrounding, or chasing them can be considered harassment and is
therefore illegal. But local, state, and federal law enforcement
officers are limited in numbers and unable to adequately monitor the
area, so there are many incidents of manatee harassment each year.
Recently,
a video shot at Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge shows people
grabbing, walking on, and riding manatees. And the St. Petersburg Times has featured several news articles documenting the manatee harassment in this area (see more articles and video below).

Maricopa County was spending approx. $18 million dollars a year on stray animals, like cats and dogs. Sheriff Joe offered to take the department over, and the County Supervisors said okay.
The animal shelters are now all staffed and operated by prisoners. They feed and care for the strays.& nbsp; Every animal in his care is taken out and walked twice daily. He now has prisoners w ho are experts in animal nutrition and behavior. They give great classes for anyone who'd like to adopt an animal. He has literally taken stray dogs off the street, given them to the care of prisoners, and had them place in dog shows.
The best part? His budget for the entire department is now under $3 million.
Teresa and I adopted a Weimaraner from a Maricopa County shelter two years ago. He was neutered, and current on all shots, in great health, and even had a microchip inserted the day we got him. Cost us $78.
So much has happened since we released our investigation last Wednesday:
- The USDA suspended its purchases from Hallmark within hours of our release of information on the case.
- Millions of people have seen our undercover video of abuse, whether on CBS Evening News, CNN, local television broadcasts, or on humanesociety.org.
- More than a dozen U.S. Senators and U.S. Representatives have expressed outrage and demanded action to prevent this kind of abuse from happening again.
- California, Iowa, Minnesota, Oregon, Washington, and other states, responding to letters HSUS sent to them about possible food safety risks, have stopped serving beef from the slaughter plant we exposed.
These responses show that the public will not stand for such cruelty to animals, nor for the health risks that come with using "downed" cows for food. But the outrage has not yet prompted a change in federal policies related to the handling of downer cows.
Public pressure is essential to the success of this case. Again, please tell as many people as possible about these terrible slaughter abuses and how they can help.
