Hello Although I do not have anyone who is in prison, I wanted to join this group as it sounds like the Native American has a tough time in prison as do our Indigenous people here in Australia.
I wanted to join to learn and be educated.
I will be more than happy to email anyone who is interested in emailing anyone in Australia,or to learn more of our Indigenous culture problems here.
I am non Indigenous Australian but empathise with the problems Indigenous races have worldwide.
Hi I'm Isma and came through an incident to this group. Care2 is a big place and just today I found this group through an comment of our dear host Chakwaina . I came here to honour one of my best friends an Choctaw Warrior Helowa Ossi that is incarnated for about 15 years now and will be in the Supermax of Colerado for another 2 years. We both have a wonderful pen pal friendship and teaching each other our path's. and discovering that both path's are very similiar . We call it "Choctaw meets Druidry. " It is amazing what is possible to do just with a pen and a piece of paper if you are inspired of brining joy to another. Yet, there is always the pain in me in knowing that he is in solidary confinement for somthing which would have been handled different in my home country Germany. I think that he is a great man in being able not to go insane after 14 years of solidary confinement and I know I will meet him one day. Sending you all peace and love from Clevedon.. UK

Hello. My name is Anu and I live in Finland. I have Native American penpal who is in prison in Illinois.
[report anonymous abuse]
Write him a letter and send it to the Social Security Adminstration. They will forward it to the last known address associated with his social security number.
Also, contact the salvation Army. They have a branch/department that helps to locate miising people.
Circulate his picture at the Pow Wows.

Introduction and Reason for Being Here September 12, 2007 4:38 PM
Greetings to all. I am from Southern California, and am here to find my brother, who has been missing since 1999, when his parole was violated, he went back to serve, and then disappeared shortly after release. He is full-blooded Native American, both he and I were adopted into a highly dysfunctional family. His name is John Edward Briano, AKA: Raul Gomez. He is almost 56 years old, born 11-20-51. While in prison, he always joined the Native American brothers, and when possible, attended local pow-wows while he was here in Cali. His last known location was Reno, Nevada. I have his Social Security card, and even old California driver's license, but none of this has helped me find him.
I would so very much appreciate any referral information, or any resources to possibly assist in this. I tried calling the prisons, hospitals, local jails, and even the Bureau of Indian Affairs, to no avail.
Thanks so much for reading!
~ Liza

I am sorry my welcome has been so long in coming--between my pregnant 19-year old having complications, the motel I work at being sold, my Life Partner's sister with Alzheimer's, my spinal problems and my computer gremlins--it's been hectic lately.
I started this list to help share information that we can get to the NA Prisoner's to help them educate the local warden about their inaleinable right to practice their NA spiritual beliefs.

Hi everyone, nice to meet you all. I have many Native American pen-pals in the United States although I come from the United Kingdom myself.
I have friends in many different states and from many different Tribes.
We share lot of things about our different cultures and I believe enrich each others lives as well.
I have enjoyed the last 2 years immensely and have helped them with difficulties where I can.
I am lucky to have met some very talented artists and budding poets.
These prisoners have taught me the value of living the Native American way and this has changed my life completely.
I'm glad to have found this group.

My brother has recently been incarcerated in GA. I know from him that Native Americans have a very hard time there. Also that the inmates are used to make items being sold for a profit and the state of GA does not pay them what is required by Federal Law.
They have been sued and lost, the thing is, they choose to pay the penalty every year to the Feds instead of paying the inmates properly as it is more profitable for them.

Cha'kwaina, for the invitation....I am Usdi Gadu, from Oklahoma, and my husband has been in prison for 18 months, after having been falsely accused and wrongly convicted after a rigged trial. His appeals was denied recently, but our attorney is working on a writ. There are a lot of issues involved here, including a biased judge. I will elaborate at a later time, it is almost midnight here now.....My husband's name is Melvin Kerchee, and he is at JCCC, Helena, OK 73741.....I have a blog, the link is http://sequichie-justiceformelvin.blogspot.com
Hello, Bear Warrior, so good to see you here, too....
Cassie, sending you hugs for your kindness. Love and Light, Usdi Gadu

My name is Cassie and I am here to honor a Native friend of Oklahoma whose husband has been wrongly imprisoned. She is brave, as is he, as she continues to fight for his freedom. I know that the Great Spirit will look upon the two of them with kindness and mercy and eventually bring her dear husband home to my friend.
I want to honor both of them and I am grateful that Chakwaina has started this group. I don't know what I can do to help, but I will at least be here to spiritually support all connected with this group.
Peace and light to all.

Osiyo (Hello) Everyone,
I am Bear Warrior. I a m Puerto Rican and Tsalagi (Cherokee). I have a half brother who is Puerto Rican and Apache who is in prison. I also have many other family members who are in prison as well. At the age of 17 I joined the United States Army and went to war. On the battlefield I was injured and brought back to the states. I ended up going to prison and spent 3 years there. To me it was an educational experience and I learned a lot. I had the street smarts and all that but I could not control my temper and was filled with rage, hatred and anger. A black man called Ice Water (a war hero) ended up getting a life sentence for saving his troops who was pinned down and destined to die if it hadn't been for him taught me self control and I hope to one day meet him so that I can shake his hand, give him a hug and thank him. If it hadn't been for him I might of been spending the rest of my life in prison. Today I work in a homeless shelter. I also help Native American youth learn the ways of a warrior. I am happily engaged to a beautiful lady who is Mescalero Apache and Chicana. I have 12 children 10 of them living and my 13th grandchild will be born this month. Right now I am so happy that I could go on a soapbox but won't. Yesterday we took my 7 month old grandson to see a heart specialist. He had two holes in his heart. Because of the prayers and ceremonies of many Native Americans one hole is completely closed and the other one is only the size of a pinhole. If you are ever going through something take it to Creator. Well I will close now.

I am Cha'kwaina. I currently live in Middle Tennessee.
Being Native American, I have many friends who are alos Native American or are truly interested in Native Americans. One very kind, elderly lady of the latter catagory, had a younger friend from her church that had married a Native man, Grey Wolf.
He is in prison at Northwest Correctional in Tiptonville, TN.
THis lady asked me several times to write to him and send him copies of the handouts from the Talking Circle I was facilatating at the time.
I was slightly uncomfortable doing this but provided her extra handouts to send to him. One day she just insisted and gave me his address.
We have been writing ever since as friends. He is older and the younger inmates seek him out for information. THey come from many backgrounds. Cherokee, Apache, Seminole, Creek, Meherrin, etc.
I find the tribal websites and print out all that is there and send back. I find books on half.com, alibris.com, and many other places and purchase them and send in to them.
Sometimes Grey Wolf will tell me something specific he needs to answer a question for someone and I'll find it in my Native American Lending Library and just copy out what answers that question and send it to them.
I print out the Wotanging Ikche and send it to them--addressed to a different one each time. I print out articles from many different Native news sources on the net and send it in to them.
SOme have no one to write to them. I do not always have something to say, but I try to get each one a piece of mail each week. To save stamps they will all write me a page and stick in one envelope and one buys the stamp this week, someone else next week.
They let me know things they need for crafts they are allowed to do for religous pourposes, it took me forever to get them to do this. I do what I can to get these things for them.
Sometimes, actually most of the time, these are scraps of leather, leftover glass beads, etc, from a project I have done or a friend of mine has done.
As of today's mail I have 4 Native American inmates at NWC that I correspond with. And a non-Native girl in a county jail in TN that I write to.

When you join, please take a minute to introduce yourself.
Tell us a little about yourself and the person that is your friend, family member, pen pal, etc. in prison. What state and the name of the prison name may prove helpful in others trying to assist you at any time.
Welcome to the group.
