Save the Monarch Butterfly October 11, 2006 2:59 AM
The fall season marks the annual migration of the majestic monarch butterfly from Canada and the U.S. to Mexico. They will fly thousands of miles to reach their destination in the forests of central Mexico in an area threatened by logging and deforestation--which if it continues, will have a devastating impact on the butterflies. Read on to find out more and how you can help protect one of our greatest treasures.
Save the Monarch Butterfly
Monarch butterflies are famous for their massive transcontinental migrations. Each year, millions of monarchs travel thousands of miles to overwinter in the forests of the Transvolcanic Mountains of Mexico--an area that provides unique conditions that promote monarch survival in freezing temperatures and help conserve energy stores for their return remigration in the spring.
In recent decades, however, the forests on which these butterflies depend have been cleared at an alarming rate, leaving the butterflies vulnerable as well as harming local communities by contributing to soil degradation and the drying up of natural springs. When record cold and snow blanketed the mountains in January 2002, a great number of butterflies died as a direct result of deforestation. Butterflies depend on the massive trees for protective shelter, and as these forests are killed at a staggering rate, so is the monarch.
You can help by funding the planting of tree seedlings in the butterflies' overwintering area in Michoacan, Mexico, through the work of The Michoacan Reforestation Fund. This important organization has worked with its Mexican partners to plant over two million trees since its founding in 1997 and is committed to restoring protective forest cover. As the trees grow, they serve as a climatic buffer that protects butterflies from harsh weather. And when sustainably harvested, the trees provide a renewable source of income for local residents.
By making a gift to Save Monarch Butterfly Habitat, you can fund the planting of 50 or 100 tree seedlings in the butterflies' overwintering area for just 50-cents per tree. This is in addition to the 6,870 square feet of land you will preserve with your purchase. Shop today and help save these amazing creatures and their vital habitat.
Thank you for your ongoing commitment to the cause!
In case there are any Treehuggers or butterfly lovers out there that are going to plant trees in this forest?
I have done this multiple times. I have now currently planted 550 Trees.
If you plant through TheRainForest site. Plz select 100 trees because you pay the same amount for 100 trees as you do 50 trees. Also know that when you do plant the seedlings through TheRainforest site that you are also helping 6,870 sq ft of endangered land also so your $50.00 donation does go a long way!
If you wish to help but don't have $50.00 to donate to plant trees you can donate any amount by visiting the Monarch contact link below Every tree planted is just .50 cents and any amount donated really does help and adds up!
By visiting this page and seeing the banners above, you have removed 2 pounds of CO2 (carbon dioxide) - which causes global warming - from the atmosphere, by helping to plant trees in the monarch butterfly forest of Michoacan, Mexico; through the Michoacan Reforestation Fund. (more info.) These forests are the winter home for the millions of North American monarch butterflies living east of the Rocky Mountains. By planting native trees to protect the remaining forests, we are helping to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and also insure that monarch butterflies will continue to exist. If you would like to plant trees to honor a loved one and have them receive a certificate please click here. Note: one ton of carbon is removed from the atmosphere over the next 42 years for every 3.45 trees planted in this forest, so when you plant 25 trees you are also removing 7 and 1/4 tons of CO2! (EcologyFund and The Rainforest Site have planted over 20,000 trees since 1999).
As of 10/01/03, the reduce pollution project on EcologyFund has retired over 2600 tons of CO2 (to fight global warming) and 5 tons of sulfur dioxide (to fight acid rain) by purchasing CO2 and SO2 credits from the Environmental Action Desk and having them retired by the Environmental Law and Policy Center (ELPC).
