Animal control officers set "box traps" yesterday to snare a dog-napping wiley coyote hated by some Beach area residents -- and fed by others.
Sean Maxwell watched in shock Feb. 21 as the buff-coloured animal that still frequents his Neville Park Blvd. backyard ran from a neighbour's property and snatched his chihauha, Zoe.
"I was standing 15 feet away ... it's not something you expect," said the father of two toddlers.
The hunt, opposed by some people in an area bounded by Kingswood Rd., Victoria Park Ave., Queen St. and Bracken Ave., is a last resort, city officials said.
Attempts were made to drive off the coyote since Zoe was snatched, said Maxwell, who first spotted it in a ravine around Christmas.
Two other pets were reported attacked, but the city said no other incidents have occurred for the past five weeks.
The battle of the Beaches coyote has residents divided. Some told city staff they love seeing wild animals, including the coyote.
Animal services said it may take several days before the Beaches coyote is nabbed in one of the "humane" box traps being set out in secret areas. It will then be euthanized.
Due to oppinions expressed by some citizens, Animal Control has now agreed to relocate the coyote as soon as they catch it. They have not yet ... smart coyote!
