Pack Of Coyotes Surrounds Groveland Woman June 12, 2009 8:53 AM

A local woman says she was scared for her life when a pack of coyotes closed in and surrounded her Monday morning while she was walking her dogs.

Mary Burke says she was walking in the woods in Groveland when coyotes closed in on her.

She used her cell phone to call 911.

"How far away are the coyotes?" the emergency dispatcher asked.

"They're like 100 yards," Burke said. "They're following me. I'm scared."

Burke took off and found herself lost in the woods with the coyotes still following.

"I'm going to run now to the end of the road," Burke said.

"You don't want to run, honey. Don't run," the dispatcher said.

"I'm so scared right now, I can't even tell you how afraid I am," Burke said.

Police say they managed to figure out Burke's exact location by tracing the GPS on her cell phone.

They directed her out of the woods while police cars raced to the area.

It was the blaring sirens from the cars that scared off the coyotes. Burke was not hurt.

Wildlife experts offer this advice if you should see or be confronted with a coyote:
1. Never feed or throw food at coyotes.
2. Do not turn your back on it, ignore it or run away.
3. Never try to pet or touch it.
4. Never move towards it, or corner it where it can't run away.
5. Yell and make a lot of noise while slowly moving towards other people.
6. Make eye contact and make your self look bigger-raise your arms high, hold up your jacket or backpack.
7. If a coyote moves towards you, throw sticks or rocks towards it, Keep yelling.

If a coyote gets too close to you:

1. Keep yelling.
2. Punch it.
3. Hit it with your backpack.

These coyote's natural food source must have either dwindled or is almost non-existent. They may have wanted the woman's dog. When food sources are low for predators they will try to find something to take its place. In this case they could have wanted the dog or were looking for a larger prey to feed their pack. Unfortunately humans are most likely the cause of this incident. Since we have been expanding into their habitat, they have to adapt to the changes or died. This is happening with other animals (cougar/mountain lion, wolves and bears are all having to deal with more humans in their territory) also which will only get worst since they will go after small pets to add to their diet so the can make it  instead of dying.
