Pete May 06, 2005 12:16 PM

One of my rescue boys is sick with pneumonia and we're struggling to get it under control. Would you guys please send good thoughts his way? He lives in Colorado.

Thanks much!

Thank you May 10, 2005 11:17 AM

Pete continues to struggle, but he is eating a few things now. He still sounds horrible, but I have hope since he's getting some nutrition. I've been nebulizing him with Albuterol and it seems to be making a difference!~

Thank you for your good thoughts for him. He still needs them...

How is it going with Pete?

Pete May 15, 2005 6:57 PM

Well, although Pete is snuffling still, he is full of energy and eats well and acts quite normal other than being a little more sleepy than the others. I've never had a rat survive so long with the snuffles. God Bless this little guy!

Thanks for asking!

How are your babies?

Pete June 09, 2005 1:25 PM

Pete is still gurgling. I am going to start him on another round of ab's. I hate to hear him gurgle like that. Makes me sad for him...

How are all of your ratties doing?!!

Hmm June 12, 2005 1:48 AM

Aww poor baby. My ratty Dash has a lumb between his leg and his little bottom, and the vet says it could possibly be a 'bone tumour' as he broke that leg when he was a little baby rat. The other one is sneezing and coughing, so they're both on antibiotics, and if the sneezing is better by Friday the vet says she'll give Dash an X-ray to decide if she should give him a major operation.

It's unsure, because they're nearly 2 and his tumour is in a very awkward place. Anyway, I believe in my little boobooDash because he's very strong and lovely. He can get through anything. I believed in Pamper when she was alive, and she survived a major surgery to remove a big lump from her neck when she was 2 1/2.

Hmm June 12, 2005 1:50 AM

I hope your poor little Pete gets better, the gurgling thing is so sad. I had to endure it all night with Scamper, but hers was so bad she couldn't move; I had to put her into a comfortable sleeping position and we had her euthanized the next day.  [ send green star]
Dash June 20, 2005 12:18 PM

I wonder if Dash may have a bone infection from the break? It will be interesting to hear what your vet finds in the x-ray when you have it done.

I now have 5 sick rats. It's very sad, but I thought it might spread once Pete got sick. Keep your fingers crossed for my ratties and say prayers if you pray.

Let us know about Dash, okay?

Hmm June 22, 2005 3:04 AM

Aww I hope your poor sick babies get better! My ratty Dash's lump appears to have stopped growing for now, so if they can't remove it, it's not all that bad. Harvie won a rosette at the show last Saturday! I'm so proud of him. 150 rats there, and he won the rosette for the rat the judge most wanted to take home

He didn't win 'best rat' though, because he's old and scruffy, like an old teddy bear.

Rosette June 24, 2005 12:23 PM

I love the award of "Rat the Judge Most Wanted to Take Home." That's so cute! You must be a very proud ratty parent. Do you have any pictures you could share? I'd love to see them.

I have even more sick ratties now. Seems most of my 15 have the sniffled. Not good. I am forever trying to find ways to get them to take their meds. Heavy Sigh. Wish me luck!

Hmm June 25, 2005 8:00 AM

Aww, your poor little babies... don't you just put the medication in their drinking water? The stuff mine take just goes into water for the rats to drink.

The vet says Dash's cancer is chewing away at his leg bone - and now the bone is the consistency of honeycomb or something... I wish there was something I could do... the vet says the only thing she'd be able to do would be to amputate his leg up to the hip. But at his age, it's hard to tell whether to put him through that or just to let the cancer run its course... I think I'm going to leave it, and hope for the best. It does seem to have stopped growing, or at least to have dramatically slowed down.

Hi Alice and Catriona and Everyone! June 27, 2005 12:10 PM

Unfortunately, things in my ratty home have taken a turn for the worst and I now have 15 sick rats. I am medicating as best I can (Catriona, what medicine do you put in your rats' water bottles?) but making sure they get enough is not easy.

I will be focusing my attention on trying to care for them, so if I disappear from all my groups for a while, I hope you all understand.

Thanks in advance for any prayers you might send our way...we sure need them.

God Bless you and all your ratties. Dash - you hang in there and enjoy the love your mom gives you. You deserve it!

Sneezy Rat June 29, 2005 8:09 AM

My name is Bonny and I am a new rat owner.  I've had my two male rats for a little over a month now and one of my boys is sneezy.  He came to me this way.  I've put vitamins in his water and they both get a varied diet of rat food, rat treats, and then misc. stuff like cereal, kale stems, soybeans (their favorite), mixed berries, cherry tomatoes, grapes, whole grain bread, sunflower seeds, and whatever else I make for myself that I think they may have a liking for.

I am really enjoying getting to know these intelligent, sweet little guys!  But does anyone have any ideas for a sneezy rat?  I haven't seen any medication for rats, do you know where I can get some?

Thanks much!

Bonny! June 29, 2005 9:25 AM

CongRATulations and Welcome Bonny! You will fall in love with rats over and over again and wonder how you ever lived without them...

Sneezing can be caused by a variety of things:

  • Dusty or incorrect bedding/litter (no cedar or pine - Aspen or Carefresh are best)
  • Other airborne irritants they are not used to
  • Upper respiratory illness (needs a vet visit) - usually, but not always, accompanied by porphyrin staining (looks like blood but isn't) around the nose or eyes
  • Happiness or an expression of frustration (some of my rats sneeze at me after I move them from a place they really like but are not supposed to be!)
  • Allergies

How long have you had them?

Again, congRATulations!

Sneezy Rat...... June 29, 2005 9:34 AM

I've had Decon, for almost 2 months now, and this other little guy, unnamed as of yet (I was thinking Strick 9, to go with the rat poison theme, calling him 'nines' for short--I know its morbid.......sorry).

Nines has been sneezing since I got him.  He had cedar/chip bedding at the swap where I got him but I have the soft recycled paper I think its called Care Fresh?  Not sure, its gray & soft, no smell, and then I have another kind that is little balls also a recycled paper product. Both bedding types are not dusty.  I did read up on them quite a bit before I got them.  They both love each other already and I have them in a four story ferret cage, with plastic ramps & shelves so their feet don't hurt from the wire, and a solid bottom.  They have a fully enclosed, plastic, 12 inch rat wheel that also has no wire for their little tootsies.  Like I said I give them vitamins in their water.

He has no runny or bloody discharge around his nose, but when he sneezes it is moist, and he cleans his little face off.  I listened to his lungs with a stethoscope (I work in animal rescue & have lotsa stuff, never saw rat medication tho!) and they sound clear.  His eyes aren't runny or anything.  He does seem a bit tired but I thought maybe it was because he's new and a bit stressed out.  His poop is normal.  Hmmm..........I think thats it?  He's a cutie! White with a brown head.  Decon is black with a white belly & four white paws.

Thanks for your imput Cindy!

How long did you say he's been sneezing?  [ send green star]
Sneezin' Rattie..... June 29, 2005 1:46 PM

Since I got him, a few days ago (he's my new guy).  I got him on Sunday.

Cute Pics Cindy! Do you breed rats?

[ send green star]  [ accepted]
No breeding June 29, 2005 1:54 PM

Definitely no breeding for me! I rescue rats. Right now I have 15. I love them all!!!!

Since you've only had your guy for a few days, give him a little time to acclimate. It may be stress or just getting used to the new environment. If he's still sneezing by early next week and nothing has changed, you may want to take him to the vet.

Best be getting back to work...

Breeding June 30, 2005 8:19 AM

I'm glad you don't breed!!! I saw your hairless and thought you 15 rescued rats! Thats fantastic! Maybe in the future when I get more experience I could do something like that.

I work in dog/cat I'm not really a fan of breeding.....

Thanks for your help!
