New here, but not to rats September 07, 2004 10:31 AM

I've had rats since 1998, well over 200 since then, and no I don't breed them. Usually when I got them from the pet store they were already pregnant so I always kept the babies, the most I've ever had a one time is 52. Right now I'm down to 8, all girls and I love them dearly. I have other pets too, but rats are by far my all time favorite. I only have one dumbo girl left now, I just love those big ears on dumbos, the other 7 have regular ears but I love them too. Most of mine die from old age or tumors, I hate tumors, it's too bad that it's so commom with rats, especially the females. Knock on wood, there is no myco here on the island as I've heard that can wipe a whole colony of rats very quickly.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi! You're an expert, then? I've just had 4 and I'm mad about them all the same! I feel kinda guilty though, because my boys stay in their cage while I'm asleep or in school, which makes the most part of the day.  [ send green star]

Wow! September 07, 2004 1:46 PM

Welcome and Wow! You've had a lot of little friends in your life! Let's hope that you never see the ravages of myco in your furkids. It's awful. Cindy  [ send green star]

Myco September 07, 2004 5:57 PM

Myco, or Mycoplasma, is that respiratory infection I mentioned to you before. That oh-so-common ailment among rats. It SUCKS!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi all! September 08, 2004 6:22 AM

I'm new to rats, we got two boys last year and I just love them! I'm so surprised at how many people are really afraid of them. They are so sweet and don't bite at all. My big concern has always been how short their lifespans are. It is so hard to lose a pet you love. Jimmy belongs to my middle son and is a "black rat" and Rocky is fawn coloured and belongs to my youngest. I want my own rat but they are in a converted rabbit hutch now and I want to wait and build our "rat condo" before I add anyone new (and then I'll have a quarantine cage). They were pet store rats but I won't buy from a pet store again as it was traumatic for me. I didn't like seeing them all in a cage that was overcrowded and with little ones too young to be away from mom. I also hated how people who didn't know how to handle them would hold them by their tails, dangling. Nice to meet you all! Theresa  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi September 08, 2004 7:31 AM

Hi Theresa, I know - it would be so nice if they lived longer. You get to know them and love them, but don't have long to be with them.  [ send green star]

I have never owned a rat, and I have never met a person who owns one. And now I find a whole group devoted to owning and caring to rats. I have an affection for all animals and I would love to show my affection for rats as well. It's nice to meet you all!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Hi September 11, 2004 12:58 AM

Hi Caitlin, It's nice to know that SOME people who don't own rats actually like them! As you see here, in our group rats are some of the most lovable of them all! They're so affectionate, friendly, intelligent, loyal, independant... the list goes on.  [ send green star]
