Response to the Idaho State Journal Letter about Rats November 23, 2004 6:12 PM

The Idaho State Journal printed the following letter in reponse to
the crazy rabid rat lady:

"I am writing in response to the ridiculous anti-rat letter printed
in today's paper. Rats eating baby's heads? You've got to be kidding.

I could not find one article about a rat killing a baby, not in
recent or archived news. Oh wait, there was that one article in the
Weekly World News ...

There are many different kinds of rats. The two main types are the
Norway rat (brown or sewer rat) and the Roof rat (black or house
rat).

Then you have the many different types of wood rats, kangaroo rats,
rice rats, cotton rats, and lots more. And those are just the wild
rats.

Domestic rats are specifically bred for generations, becoming the
docile, intelligent, friendly pet rat.

There's a really great Web site that will educate you on rat species,
strains, breeds, and varieties. You can find it at
www.ratbehavior.org/RatSpecies.htm.

There's also a wonderful article talking about the joys of owning a
rat. It's at: www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?
P=A&A=1626&S=0&SourceID=28.

That is, if you are open-minded about learning more before making
such outrageous statements. I suggest you learn the facts before
submitting such an opinionated, ignorant item for the general public
to see. I just hope that those who read it are smart enough to know
that you can't believe everything you read.

I, too, saw the ad for the free baby rats. I assumed that they were
cute, clean domestic rats, and thought they might make a good
Christmas gift for my son. But that was before I found out they were
actually disgusting, rabid, baby-killing rats.
