"altering" a male rat May 11, 2006 12:30 AM

 Hey all,

My boyfriend and I are thinking of getting a male rat, but we already have two beautiful girls that I'm not really trying to get pregnant. I know it is possible to alter a male but at what cost and what cut of age (no pun intended).

Find the best vet May 27, 2006 12:49 PM

I had two of my boys neutered in October of last year.  I had hopes of joining two new "teen" boys into a colony of three adult males but they hated each other.  One of the teens even became aggressive to people.

It depends on where you are. I am in Atlantic Canada and it cost me $90 each.  But I didn't go to the best vet for "exotics" and as a result they had abscesses and needed antibiotics and rechecks.  My Georgie has never been the same since.  Whatever it costs for the best vet in your area, pay it.  Shop around, talk to people in your area who had a rat neutered.

Younger is better for neutering.  My youngster who was 4 months when he was fixed, weathered the abscesses, additional surgery to drain his abcess and healed well.  He  is fine now.  My one year old (at the time) healed slowly and has been sick ever since.

Find the best vet.  A regular cat and dog vet without rat experience won't cut it.  Indeed you want one with the most experience.

Theresa
