Gay athletes and spectators would not be safe in Russian 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, after a law passed last month in Russia's Parliament and signed earlier this week by President Vladimir Putin banned "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations".

"Some gay rights activists like RUSA LGBT have asked corporate sponsors and partners of the Sochi Olympics -- including Coca-Cola, VISA, Omega Watches, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Procter & Gamble, Samsung and Panasonic -- to withdraw their support and funding unless Russia can ensure the safety of all visitors to the Olympic Games."

You can also look these Corporate Sponsors up on the Internet and e-mail them directly.
LETTERS, real OBJECTS they can handle, ALSO can have a MAJOR impact!
They do KEEP TRACK of these things, for PR purposes!

Change the Winter Olympic Games back to Vancouver, Canada, where they were held before, is ONE suggestion made.

Free speech and the LGBT community in Russia are under attack by the Russian government. Countless LGBT Russians and their allies have been detained, arrested and in some cases beaten for protesting the wrong-doing of their government. Our attendance would only condone these hateful, bigoted and horrific acts. Although The United States Olympic Committee has stated "the Games can take place without discrimination against athletes, officials, spectators and the media," the law in Russia is clear:

'The new law allows the Russian government to arrest and detain gay or "pro-gay" foreigners for up to 14 days prior to their eventual expulsion from the country. Russian residents are subject to these fines and sentences as well.'

United States Olympic Committee committed to hate?

AND:

'The law, which was passed unanimously by both houses of Russia's Parliament, imposes a fine of up to 5,000 rubles ($168 USD) for any citizen who shares information discussing "non-traditional sexual relations" with minors that might cause a "distorted understanding" that gay and lesbian relationships are "socially equivalent" to heterosexual pairings, reports Russia's RIA Novosti. The fines increase if the person disseminating the "propaganda" is a state or legal official, rising all the way to 50,000 rubles ($1,530 USD) for an official promoting such information to children.'

'Any individual using mass media or the Iinternet to share information about LGBT identities can be subject to fines up to 100,000 rubles ($3,050 USD), while officials are subject to fines twice that amount, and legal entities face a 1 million ruble fine or 90-day suspension for discussing LGBT people.'

Putin signs anti-gay propaganda bill.

If the United States Olympic Committee attends the 2014 Olympics in Russia, they will be ultimately condoning these extreme acts of homophobia.

Russian Lawmaker: We will arrest Gay Athletes, Tourists at Winter Olympic Games

http://www.care2.com/news/member/827551733/3618625

"We WILL arrest...." There you have it, folks!
======

WINTER OLYMPIC FIGURE SKATING will definitely be affected -
Figure Skating is practically a "Gay Sport" and that should MAKE NO DIFFERENCE IN HOW AN ATHLETE IS TREATED.

According to the Russian draconian laws, even ACKNOWLEDGING YOUR SAME-SEX MARRIED SPOUSE OR PARTNER is a PUNISHABLE CRIME - for TALKING ABOUT a "non-traditional" relationship..... yes, TALKING...

These laws according to how they are written, EQUALLY AFFECT RUSSIANS AND FOREIGNERS - 4 Dutch tourists HAVE ALREADY BEEN ARRESTED under those laws.
You don't have to BE Gay, just SHOW SUPPORT...

The Olympic Committee and their Russian contacts CANNOT "promise that the athletes and their friends will be safe".
Repeat, they CANNOT. These are merely WORDS. They know they HAVE to say that.
EVERYONE KNOWS, THIS IS FALSE.

You trust them? then, you're CRAZY! You'd go over to Sochi, on the basis of TRUSTING THOSE WORDS?

THEY ARE A BUNCH OF UTTER HYPOCRITES, who don't care WHO they put into Danger, into Harm's Way...

UPDATE

UPDATE ON REACTION FROM THE GAY COMMUNITY:
The Gay Community is not of course a Monolith! Reaction has been DIVIDED, so far. One part of the Gay Community, as recorded in the Gay Press, wants to BOYCOTT the Winter Olympics in Stochi, and everything connected with it - including the CORPORATE SPONSORS, [such as Coca-Cola, Proctor&Gamble, Sony, Panasonic, OmegaWatches, etc.].

Others, however, say that Gay Athletes and Fans SHOULD go to the Olympics, and MAKE A DEMONSTRATION OF SOLIDARITY THERE, risking arrest and worse, if necessary! [They might be beaten, even expelled from the country - and thus not be allowed to participate in the Olympics at ALL! In which case, one hopes that OTHER ATHLETES FROM THEIR COUNTRIES, ACT IN SOLIDARITY WITH THEIR GAY BROTHERS AND SISTERS!!!]
Among the prominent figures advocating the latter course, are Olympic diver and AIDS activist Greg Louganis; and progressive sportswriter Dave Zirin.
Among those advocating Boycott, are Russian-born American filmmaker Wes Hurley.
ALL, however, advocate SPEAK OUT! ACT UP!

Other ideas promoted in the Gay Press, include, TO BOYCOTT ALL THINGS RUSSIAN - which would include STOLI brand Vodka, and other Vodkas. If Vodka is really your thing, then OTHER COUNTRIES export Vodka too - such as Poland. Change brands - and don't forget to go after publications that ADVERTISE Russian brands.
Another thing, is to WRITE the State Department and Congress and Officials, to NOT GRANT VISAS to those Russian legislators behind the Gay-repressive laws. We don't want such HATE spread in this country! There is good precedent for this... ALL European and other countries can do this.

This information comes from the Seattle Gay News, a weekly newspaper, the August 2, 2013 issue.

To Boycott or Not To Boycott the Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014
1 year ago

The case AGAINST a Boycott: as recorded in the Gay Press:
The Gay Community, including the Gay Community in RUSSIA, itself, is DIVIDED on this issue.
23 Russian LGBT activists have issued a statement calling for a boycott of the Games, scheduled to begin February 7, 2014, in the resort town of Sochi.
"Vladimir Putin's regime will not get away with anti-Gay violence. We speak out in favor of boycotting Russian goods and Companies, and the Olympic Games in Sochi."
Other Russian activists, however, are urging the world to participate in the games but use the occasion to protest Russia's anti-Gay policies.
The Russian LGBT Network, an NGO affiliated with the International Lesbian and Gay Association {ILGA}, called for athletes and spectators to attend the games but visibly display solidarity with Russia's LGBT population. [See entire statement, too long to post here, on the ILGA FACEBOOK PAGE.]
"Do not boycott the Olympics - boycott Homophobia! Stand in solidarity with people in Russia and bring LGBT pride and values of human rights and freedoms to the Games in Sochi!"
Moscow Pride leader Nikolai Alekseev announced his group would organize a "Sochi Pride" to correspond with the opening day of the Olympics.
"Join us! It will be much more effective to draw attention to official homophobia in Russia all around the world and expose the hypocrisy of the International Olympic committee, which went into discriminatory agreements with [the] Russian regime, and of the European Court of Human Rights, which still has not considered our complaint... Vive Sochi Pride 2014!"
Two of the most prominent Gay American Olympians also joined in opposition to a boyott of the Sochi games: Gay figure skater Johnny Weir.... announced that he would compete at Sochi. [Altho the Russian Hate Campaign] "is heartbreaking and a travesty of international proportions... I still will compete... I implore the world not to boycott..."
Olympic diver and AIDS activist Greg Louganis told the New York Times that "Boycotts don't work... boycotts hurt the wrong people," meaning athletes who lose their opportunity to compete rather than the host country.
Weir and Louganis are joined by Gay New Zealand speed-skater Blake Skjellerup, who announced he would compete wearing a rainbow pin while in Sochi. "For me it's less about taking a stand and more about just being myself," he said. "I have no interest in going back into the closet in Sochi..."
[Former Olympic Athlete] John Carlos, [who in the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City, made waves by raising his fist in a Black Power salute on the medal stand], said: "The bottom line is, if you stay home, your
message stays home with you... Don't let your message be buried and don't bury yourself. To be heard is to be greater than a boycott..."
WILL SOCHI BE SAFE?
The International Olympic Committee issued a statement... saying it had "received assurances from the highest levels" of the Russian government that athletes and fans would be exempt from arrest...
Nevertheless, Russian officials maintain that they will enforce Russian law. [!]
[Whom do you BELIEVE?]
[Also, if Olympians are "exempt", how about the innocent LGBT people who LIVE in Russia who are NOT "exempt"? How best to SHOW SOLIDARITY with them. An OPEN Question!]

This CONSIDERABLY CONDENSED from "A Debate of Olympic Proportions: Should the LGBT community boycott the 2014 Winter Games in Russia?"
by Mike Andrew, Seattle Gay News Staff Writer.
