ABOUT ORADEA October 12, 2007 4:43 PM

About Oradea

Oradea, one of the beautiful cities of Eastern Europe, is the entrance gate to Romania, on the Western border, and the capital of the Bihor County. Located on the hills between Crisana Plain and the foot of the Western Carpathians, on the banks of the Crisul Repede River, the town blends nostalgic imprints of the past, magic of nature and wind of change all together.

Petit Paris, as Oradea Mare used to be called in the early 20th century, has the spirit of the belle epoque even today. This feeling is rendered by the architectural Secession style that gives a special elegance to this town, still preserving the atmosphere of the turn of the last century. The town also suggests a long lasting spirit of a community that, for centuries, has been placed at the crossroads of trade routes, at the junction of civilizations, circumscribed to both the Western and the Eastern Worlds.

BEZDIN MONASTERY November 01, 2007 2:36 PM

http://www.crestinortodox.ro/cele_mai_accesate_articole/Manastirea_Bezdin-22-17141.html

Manastirea Bezdin

Manastirea Bezdin

Existenta manastirii Bezdin a insemnat un moment important in istoria comunitatii sarbesti din aceasta provincie a Imperiului Austro-Ungar, in jurul sfantului lacas mentinandu-se vie credinta si coeziunea de fratietate a acestei etnii.

Manastirea Bezdin

 Manastirea Bezdin          Manastirea Bezdin

In anul 1753 cunoscutul pictor aradean Stefan Tenetchi picteaza iconostasul bisericii. In anul 1771 conacul manastirii avea deja dimensiuni importante, avand peste 52 de incaperi, capela, antreu, trapeza. In acea vreme vietuiau aici 16 calugari.

Manastirea Bezdin

SOUTH WEST OF ROMANIA November 02, 2007 7:24 PM

The city, which was originally called Drobetae by the Romans, took its later name of Turnu Severin, or the Northern Tower, from a tower on the north bank of the Danube built by the Byzantines, which stood on a small hill surrounded by a deep moat. This was built to commemorate a victory over the Gauls and Marcomanni by the Roman emperor Septimius Severus (222-235). Near Turnu Severin are the remains of the celebrated Trajan's bridge, the largest in the Empire, built in 103 by the architect Apollodorus of Damascus. The Danube is about 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) broad at this spot. The bridge was composed of twenty arches supported by stone pillars; only two are still visible at low water.

Ruins of Trajan's Bridge

After the retreat of the Roman administration from Dacia, the city was preserved under Roman occupation as a bridgehead on the north bank of the Danube (4th-6th centuries). Destroyed by Huns in the 5th century, it was rebuilt by Justinian I (527-565). It was in the Middle Ages that the city changed its name to Turnu Severin and became the political center of the Banat of Severin (13th century). The city was claimed and possessed first by the Kingdom of Hungary, which established a Roman Catholic bishopric in Severin, and circa 1330 by the Wallachian voivodes. It was seized by the Ottoman Empire in 1524. Once under Ottoman occupation, the territory's administration moved to the west of Oltenia, and was centered in Cerneţi

After the Danube was freed from Ottoman control (as a consequence of the Treaty of Adrianople in 1829), it was decided to build the present city (in 1836, following a rigorous program), and then the harbor (1858). The building of some industrial factories spurred the redevelopment of the city. The city experienced growth on multiple levels (economic, urban and social), and in 1972 it received the name of Drobeta-Turnu Severin. The first written document mentioning the city 1,870 years earlier was commemorated IN 1992

I FORGOT TO MENTION , BEFORE OF SOUTH WEST OF ROMANIA THERE ARE ALSO November 04, 2007 5:00 PM

PÂNCOTA

PANCOTA is a dynamic locality, with a powerful trade network, high school, cultural house, library and many public institutions. The locality was famous for the fairs and markets, organized since the XVIIIth century, being a handicraft centre, where the team system appeared at the beginning of XIXth century. For ancient times the people used to practice the leathery, to ensure the life conditions of the people.

At a distance of 500 m from the bottom of the locality, there was a citadel, a feudal fortification, probably a centre of a Romanian cnezat (region), form XIVth century. In Pancota there is the unique curved furniture factory in Romania.

SIRIA

The old residence of the voivodes in the middle eve, centre of an important and expanded feudal area, Siria passed in its rich history flourishing periods, as well as sieges and military conflicts. The fortress and the area belonged along the centuries to Iancu of Hunedoara, Matei Corvin or to the Bathory family.

Fortress

- The Fortress (documentary certified in 1331) raised on a hill next to the commune, still keeps between its walls Roman bricks. Being part of the fortification system that defended the western part of the Transsylvanian. Principality, the fortress has been repeatedly conquered, by the rebels of Gheorghe Doja (1514), the Ottoman (1607) or Hapsburgic troops (1693) that do also destroy it 1784, in order not to be any more occupied by the rebels. In 1599, the same as Ineu, the fortress has been dominated by the army of Mihai Viteazul (Mihai the Brave).
- The Bohus Castle (XIXth century) remembers of the capitulation of the Hungarian revolutionary army in 1849. It house the Memorial Museum Ioan Slavici, that relates the life and literary activity of the great Romanian novelist born in Siria.

PESTERA URSILOR IN THE WEST CARPHATIANS July 07, 2008 1:35 AM

This is to honnor Horia,Cosca and Crisan, great romanian heros.Music and lyrics by Adrian Paunescu, sung by Cristian Buica.
The Revolt of Horea, Cloşca and Crişan began in Zarand Country, Transylvania on 2 November 1784, but it soon spread all throughout the Apuseni Mountains. Their main demands were related to the feudal serfdom and the lack of political equality between Romanians and other ethnicities of Transylvania.
The leaders were Horea (Vasile Ursu Nicola, born 1731), Cloşca (Ion Oargă, born 1747) and Crişan (Marcu Giurgiu, born 1733).
They fought at Câmpeni, Abrud and Roşia and defeated the Austrian Imperial Army at Brad on 27 November 1784.
The revolt was crushed on 28 February 1785 at Dealul Furcilor (Forks' Hill), Alba-Iulia, and afterwards the leaders were caught. Horea and Cloşca were executed by breaking on the wheel; Crişan hanged himself on the night before the execution.

Early in my childhood have I became familiar with the traditions of my area. Here I am on a grape festival and for this purpose also on a horse. I already have ski at the age of five. That can be done here too. This picture has a long story. Notice the white grass. Somewhere in the Bihor Mountains... ...there lies a chapel on the field... ... and under the field. Now to an almost unique outlook. The Cetãtile Ponorului, a system of three collapse dolinas, lies before us. There is only one similar to this in Europe in Slowenia. The Dolinas are huge, deep... ... and for that wonderful too. The Hungarian name of the place is Csodavár, that means castle of miracle. Thought that almost everyone can go quite easily to the ground of the dolinas ... Or even under that the ground. Here is the entry of the cave. Soon we'll find a subterranean river. There are at least 400 caves in the Bihor Mountains. The one on the picture is the Focul Viu cave, that means Living Fire. The largest ice cave of Romania is also in these mountains. The cave Scãrişoara is easy to visit. 95 % of the caves are not enlarged and only one, the bear cave, is illuminated. The cave on the picture is from the Sighiştel valley. There are a large number of small, but beautiful caves. But now let's go out of the caves... because the Sighiştel valley is also wonderful ... photo: Gabriel Mera ... and after a healthy hike... ... we reach the Galbena valley. It is one of the narrowest in these mountains. It begins with this fountain. The water flows rapidly. Sometimes it disappears ... ... and reappears. A strange phenomen of the most beautiful lime mountains. Here another valley, with the Vârciorog waterfall. Nearby there is a large ravenna, the Groapa Ruginoasa.

The water flows rapidly. Sometimes it disappears ...

... and reappears.

A strange phenomen of the most beautiful lime mountains.

Here another valley, with the Vârciorog waterfall.

Nearby there is a large ravenna, the Groapa Ruginoasa.

Castelul Banloc – Timis

Castelul Banloc
