Did you know that theRhino is one of the Animals thought to be the inspiration for the Legend of the Unicorn! It makes sense, if you think about the fact that, of all the Animals thought to be an inspiration, the Rhino is the only one who belongs to the same Family as the Horse ~ of which the Unicorn is, of course, also a part! . . . In fact, there is an Asian One-Horned species of Rhino called the Rhinoceros Unicornis!
There were once dozens of species of Rhino all over the globe ~ Now only 5 main species are left: 3 Asian & 2 African, all of whom are critically Endagered, due to Poaching & Loss of Habitat!
Rhinos are an ancient and amazing Animal ~ every bit as Enchanting as the Unicorn! . . . It would truly be a tragedy to lose them!! Please help us save them, before they too become just a Legend!!! ] :< )

3 black rhinos butchered in Zimbabwe, appeal launched and reward offered. Sunday, 10:11 PM
3 black rhinos butchered in Zimbabwe, appeal launched and reward offered. . . .
It is with shock and horror that we received reports the massacre of 3 black rhino at the hands of poachers on the night of the 7th November 2007 at Imire Safari Ranch in Zimbabwe.
Just over 20 years ago, Imire Safari Ranch became the guardians of 7 orphaned black rhino. The purpose of this was to try and increase the population of the endangered species and over the past 2 decades, the Travers family, who run the ranch, have lovingly reared and bred these animals, successfully releasing 13 black rhino back into Matusadonna National Park.
On the night of 7th of November, 4 armed poachers dressed in camouflage uniform, assaulted and tied up the rhino guards and opened fire on the 3 adult rhino in their pens. All 3 were killed - Sprinter, a male, DJ, a female who had recently given birth to a calf and tragically, Amber a pregnant female who was due to give birth in a week. Amber's unborn calf also died. . . .
The futility of this terrible violence is illustrated by the fact that the 3 rhino had been dehorned 6 weeks previously in an effort to make them less attractive to poachers but nevertheless, the poachers tried to hack out the inch of new horn growth from one of the rhinos before being frightened off by the sound of a car approaching. Imire Safari Ranch is now left with 4 orphaned rhinos including DJ's 6 week old calf.
2 rhinos kileld in Hwange:
There have also been reports that two black rhinos were killed in Hwange last weekend, and their horns hacked off.
Reward offered:
Imire is offering a reward to anyone who can lead them to the despicable people who were responsible for the massacre. They have circulated the following appeal for funds for a reward . . .

The National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority has set a $3 billion reward for anyone with information leading to the arrest of poachers who shot and killed three rhinos at Imire Game Park outside Marondera early this month.
The reward comes when the country is experiencing poaching on its national and private parks despite the fact that the authority has dehorned all the country's rhinos to protect them against poachers. In a statement, the authority said the reward had been set aside to encourage people with information on the incident to open up and help it to close on the poachers and help secure the country's wildlife.
"Following the rhino poaching incident that took place recently at Imire Game Park, the parks authority has set aside a sum of $3 billion to be given as reward to the person who provides information which will lead to the arrest and conviction of the three suspected poachers who killed the rhinos," it read. A fortnight ago, suspected poachers strayed into Imire Game Park, shot and killed three rhinos leaving a baby rhino. In an earlier interview, parks spokesperson Retired Major Edward Mbewe said the move to weed out poachers in the country would be intensified following the increase in incidences of poaching in the country's wildlife parks.
"Our duty is to protect the country's wildlife and as a result we will not tire until such elements are brought to book. As parks, we are greatly disturbed by the pockets of rhino poaching that have been recorded in the country recently despite the fact that the authority dehorned all the rhinos in the country.
On 11-Nov-2007, five poachers armed with AK47s raided the rhino pens at Imire Game Ranch, intimidated and attacked the guards, and shot dead all three adult rhinos, Amber, DJ and Sprinter. To save the rhino project and the remaining rhinos, we are launching the Imire Rhino Fund, the proceeds of which will be used in the best possible way: reward money, milk powder and glucose for Tatenda the newly-born and now orphaned little male calf, and increased protection for other captive-bred rhinos.
Please donate urgently, and 100% of your donation will go towards Imire. For all tax deductible donations of $100 or more we will send you a DVD, "That we still have rhinos..," our world class documentary from the May trip, the story of some of our projects in Zimbabwe.

Take Action - top the Governor's Big Ditch - CA September 04, 2009 9:34 AM
The state legislature is currently considering legislation that serves as a road map to constructing the controversial "peripheral canal" and includes funding for new dams. California already diverts more than 6 million acre-feet of freshwater from the Delta annually and has more than 1,400 major dams blocking our rivers. The state has issued water-rights permits for more than five times the average annual water flow in all of California's rivers and streams. And an economic report released to the legislature last week reveals that the governor's proposed canal could cost a staggering $54 billion.
Does any aspect of this project make sense at a time when native fish populations have collapsed due to unsustainable water diversions and state parks are being closed by budget problems? After three decades of failing to solve the fisheries and water-quality issues in the Delta, lawmakers are now rushing to approve a patchwork package of misguided bills in the last weeks of this legislative session -- with no public input.
Though the sponsors of the legislation claim they are not authorizing a peripheral canal, the legislation would give a governor who has declared his intent to build it the majority of votes on a council that would have the authority to fund and construct it. Such a canal would facilitate the demise of Central Valley salmon and other native delta fish.
Take action to save the Delta today. Please contact your state assembly and senate representatives immediately and urge them to vote down the Delta bill package.
Time is running out for the world's smallest rhino. According to a recent press release, scientists and experts from all over the world are rushing to save the Sabah rhino, Dicerorhinus sumatrensis harrissoni, from extinction. . . .
