It has been so cold in Central Oregon that already 2 homeless people have died. I read in the news that two local churches in Bend have opened their doors at night to help those who need shelter.

I made some sandwiches and a general food bag to bring to people on the street this evening. I felt so bad for anyone who is out in the cold right now. It is frigid and very dangerous. I guess it could be -5 degrees in areas of Bend through the night and then south of Bend in Sunriver and La Pine up to -15 below.

I wish I had more time to help. I work full time and have 4 children. I will try and incorporate some kind of volunteer time.

Wendy, kudos to you for doing what you can, where you can.  If we each helped in some way things would be so very different!

When you get a chance, check out the winter shelter thread.  The faith community in my county is doing some amazing work putting together a severe weather shelter program.  One church had 21 people overnight on the fourth night of operation.

If there have been deaths due to severe weather, perhaps you and others could express your outrage, etc. to your local government and advocate for change.  Speak to people at local churches...write a letter to the editor of your local paper.  And remember these quotes:

~ If you think you are too small to be effective, you have never been in bed with a mosquito.  ~Betty Reese

~ Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has. ~ Margaret Mead

Many, many blessings to you for your efforts!!

Cynthia

If you could make someone's life better
in just one day...would you?
Last night 1736 people in Central Oregon were homeless.
754 of them were children.

On October 11, 2008,Central Oregon Partnership and a tri-county coalition of public and private advocates will use the Project Homeless Connect model to provide on-site humanitarian services important to the well-being of the chronically poor or homeless families and individuals throughout Deschutes, Jefferson and CrookCounties.

Spearheaded by the Homeless Leadership Coalition and community grassroots efforts, Project Homeless Connect is an ambitious step toward a ten year plan to end homelessness in Central Oregon.

Here in Central Oregon individuals, businesses, church groups and social service agencies will reach out to people living in the open, in vehicles, on the streets, in cheap motels, couch hopping, doubled up with other families, and those who are turned away from shelters because of overcrowding. These community members in need will receive advocacy and referral assistance on the day of the event for continued help after October 11th has come and gone.
