Welcome message to new members! June 22, 2006 6:49 PM
Welcome to the group! If you are interested in joining a group that is strictly for non-religious people; a place to discuss issues affecting us in this society, here is the link: http://www.care2.com/c2c/group/noreligiontoo
We look forward to seeing you there and hearing your views!
For taking a stand. That had to have been a huge step for you. My personal opinion, I do not need god in any way to feel that I am good or am doing good. It is easier as an adult now cause I really now do know right from wrong.
Good for you for taking the next step in being your own person.
An atheist requires a gigantic leap of faith. There are two nearly impossible requirements for an atheist. An atheist must believe that everything is coming from nothing and an atheist is convinced that he will not survive. To believe these two things is quite a demanding requirement. Atheists can maintain their stance only by completely ignoring this and not even thinking about it until someone brings it to their attention.
It takes no leap of faith for one to say I am an Atheist. The only thing most atheist's have in common is "a lack of belief in any particular deity". I don't believe Santa Claus, or the tooth fairy are real either..no faith needed here. Atheist's don't make the claim "everything comes from nothing", and it is absurd to think they do. They simply LACK a belief in deities. There are strong atheist's and weak atheist's. As far as surviving the death of my body, I do not believe that any conscious, aware part of me will survive my death. In the words of Albert Einstein :
I cannot conceive of a God who rewards and punishes his creatures, or has a will of the type of which we are conscious in ourselves. An individual who should survive his physical death is also beyond my comprehension, nor do I wish it otherwise; such notions are for the fears or absurd egoism of feeble souls.
It is fine to find a group like this for me and my sweet Nancy. We are already active members of Peggy's group. And after some problem's in our open groups we started 'Do you hate me?', a group for open discussion, not reserved to atheists, but we both discuss everything from our atheist view.
We are active in Mary Neal's AIMI too, because we are very engaged in what happens inside the walls of psychiatry and never see the light. I added two blogs about.
We are happy to meet so many atheist-friends here, because sometimes it is hard to be non-religious on Care2.
It's hard to be non-religious anywhere it seems.Unless you want to fall under the scrutiny of the religious, and labeled a person that is influenced by the devil...It's a sad thing..
Hi everyone! I am an atheist and ultra liberal from Puerto Rico.
It ain't so hard to be an atheist, for me its just a factor of common sense. We didn't came from nothing, we are the result of billions of years of chemical and atomic reaction. The randomness of the elements and the emergence that maintain them united and bonding, even with big cosmic explosions new things are created, there's creation in the entropy and we're the result of that. So if there's an all powerful being, that created that beautifully insane universe of elements from which we are part off and full of paradox, it will be so boring and tasteless. I feel more awe in my heart in a universe made of elements which interact with themselves in a organized-chaotic symphony, that in a universe created by some godly being that already have everything in mind and ready-made.
I believe that religion its okay for anyone who wants to believe in it, and for all the people who doesn't want to look further into the beauty of our world, to understanding it with real facts provided by our everlasting quest of knowledge and not with the diluted vision of a group that wants to take the complexity of the universe and substitute it with plain and mythological based answers.
The only part where being an atheist hurts its when people by ignorance or stupidity judge you, sometimes without knowing you... and many times, even knowing you. From unknown people to friend and family, everyone have a piece of argument against you, even when you don't mess with their religious philosophy. And that says a lot about human behavior.
I believe that the clue of being atheist, its that you don't wander preaching your ideals because you understands that diversity its important, but the religious ones don't understand about diversity. They want you to believe in their vision, no matter if it hurts you or not. that's a bummer.
I am glad to share this piece of thought with you.
You stated that very well, Christian C. When you're religious neighbors and friends, and people you don't know find out you don't believe, they most often do judge you. They feel that because you don't believe in god you must be influenced by the devil. It does in fact make a sad statement for humanity.
