Legal The Bush Administration decision not to appeal the 9th Circuit's decision means the 3-year-old legal battle over hemp seed products is finally over. (September 28, 2004) Unfortunately under today’s laws Presidents George Washington and Thomas Jefferson would be arrested for the felony crime of growing Hemp plants. Thankfully for them when they both were Hemp farmers, American farmers were legally bound to grow Hemp.
High No it’s not possible to get “high” from eating hemp foods. It is not marijuana. Hemp is an industrial plant only related to marijuana, just as a Great Dane is related to a Chihuahua. It is just as harmless as trace amounts of opiates in poppy seeds. The strains of hemp plants used for food have been naturally selected to produce little THC. Even better it does not cause false positives in standard drug testing.
History The oldest relic of human industry is a bit of hemp fabric dating back to approximately 8,000 BC. Hemp arrived in Colonial America with the Puritans in the form of seed, fiber in the lines, sails and caulking of the Mayflower. Covered wagons were also covered with Hemp canvas; even the very word canvas comes from the Arabic word that means Hemp
Not only were Presidents Washington and Jefferson both hemp farmers. They used hemp products, and praised the hemp plant in their writings. Thomas Jefferson's draft of the Declaration of Independence was written on hemp paper.
The USDA produced a film called Hemp For Victory to encourage US farmers to grow hemp for the war effort. The US government formed War Hemp Industries and subsidized Hemp cultivation. During the War and US farmers grew about a million acres of hemp across the Midwest.
Henry Ford recognized the utility of the hemp plant. He constructed a car of resin stiffened hemp fiber, and even burned fuel made from hemp. Ford knew that hemp could produce vast economic resources when widely cultivated.
Health Americans are finally looking for healthy foods and Hemp is the perfect find. Hemp is a great source of complete protein offering 17 different amino acids including all of the essential ones. Simply no other single food source can provide all the essential fatty acids, essential proteins, & other nutrients in such perfect ratios. Hemp oils & seeds are 2 of the best sources of essential fatty acids. This ratio of fatty acids has been shown to prevent and even reverse Alzheimers Disease.
Polyunsaturated fats have been shown to be beneficial for the prevention of heart disease and Hemp Seed Oil has one of the highest concentrations of polyunsaturated fats. The US, FDA claims that plant sterol and stanol esters reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels. Hemp seed is the only seed with no cholesterol. Hemp Seed Oil also has a very high content of Chlorophyll, which is anti-carcinogenic.
Environment An acre of hemp produces as much pulp as 4 acres of trees and while it can take 20 years to once again grow trees on the same land. We would not only save our forest from destruction but it would also save our farmers from destruction, create job and produce healthy, more durable and environmentally friendly products all with out outsourcing.
Hemp is a soil building plant that is excellent in crop rotation and can be grown and harvested in 90 days. Hemp grows well without herbicides, fungicides, or pesticides. It's strong roots control erosion and weed eradication. In our current climate of deforestation and global warming, such sustainability gives hemp a distinct advantage over products currently in many markets. Hemp is a hardworking, environmentally sound renewable resource. People have become so wrapped up in “the drug war" aspect of marijuana that many are forgetting its uses as an industrial material and a healthy food source.
Hemp is a great source for paper, fiber and yes even oil. By using clean burning methanol fuel from Hemp we could replace 50% of domestic oil, without tapping Alaska, offshore drilling or risking oil spills. During photosynthesis the growth cycle of the plant removes 4 times as much C02 from the air as it puts in, so it helps clean the environment.
Fiber Hemp fabrics are warmer, softer, more water absorbent, will not mildew, resist odor, and last 26 times longer than cotton, Also can be woven as smooth as silk or lace. Original Levis Jeans and of course sails and ropes were made from hemp fiber due to its superior strength.
Hemp can be used to produce fiberboard that is stronger than wood, lighter than wood, and fire retardant. Hemp can also be used to produce strong, durable and environmentally friendly plastic substitutes. Thoughts How long are we going to turn our back on this amazing plant? It makes no sense that we are not using this healthy, durable and environmentally friendly plant to its fullest potential. As George Washington said "Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere." President George Washington, 1794

If you still feel this is not enough proof that Hemp is viable or doubt these findings I challenge you to do your own research and prove it to yourself you may be amazed at what you find.
What can you do to help raise awareness about this plant that would revolutionize the economy and help bring balance to our over-burdened ecosystem? You can educate yourself, write to your state representatives to vote for laws re-legalizing the cultivation of Industrial Hemp, purchase hemp products and help reduce waste by recycling. You can find the names and address of your state Senators at www.senate.gov and your Congressional Rep. at www.house.gov/writerep

if i read correctly, hemp is illegal to grow? i have seen stores with hemp products. how do they do that? if i could grow it, where would i get the seeds from?
Nice list of facts here…. There’s no question, we should be growing hemp.
Steph, the products in America that contain hemp are from hemp grown and processed overseas (Canada & Asia mostly). Seeds are easily obtainable over the internet/mail order catalogs… There are some Native American Reservations fighting the battle to grow hemp since American laws are not technically The Law there but it’s been an uphill battle with the DEA stepping in and taking charge..
OVER GROW THE GOVERNMENT...... ------------ “The best hemp and the best tobacco grow on the same kind of soil. The former article is of the first necessity to the wealth and protection of the country. The latter, never useful.” -Thomas Jefferson
Yes here in the states we can consume as much Hemp as we
want, but we cant grow it here. It is a no brainier the benefits we could obtain
by growing it. The best you can do for now is write your representatives. I now
that sounds silly but it works. Ask them to explain it to you. Public out cry
does promote change.
First of all it's great to see your site good work spreading the word!
I'm currently working on a promotion movie for industrial hemp seeds with a official certificate (Europe based),
I was wondering if you could help me find the official sources for some of the information you write about on your site. I've been doing some research on the internet already and I find it very hard to find real scientific research results in general. So if you could maybe poor some light on your sources that would be great! Thank you so much!
