A veteran Hub animal cruelty officer says that a battered and bloody pit bull left to die in a wooded area of Hyde Park on Sunday night is the worst case of abuse hes seen in his 35 years on the force.
Im amazed people can be this cruel to an animal, said Lt. Alan Borgal of the Animal Rescue League of Boston.
This dog was dumped there to die, Borgal said. These people dont feel this dog feels any pain, and they dont care about its suffering.
Borgal said Turtle, so named because she was found in a field near Turtle Pond Parkway, was a good-natured female whose temperament made her a natural as a bait dog, a canine punching bag used to train vicious pit bulls for their deadly competition.
Three youths killed a two-day-old
fawn in Dorset by stamping on it "for a laugh",
a court has heard.
Two 17-year-olds and a 16-year-old caught the female
baby deer as it waited for its mother in Upton Country
Park, on 10 June.
Poole Youth Court heard the teenagers were "egging" each
other on.
The teenagers, from Poole, who cannot be named for legal reasons, all deny
intentionally killing a deer while on land without consent.
They also deny an alternative charge of
beating a wild mammal with intent to cause unnecessary suffering.
A post-mortem examination showed the fawn suffered
several skull fractures, a severed spine and a fractured right leg.
The teenagers were arrested on 15 June
after a police appeal attracted international interest and officers were
tipped-off with their names, the court heard.
Prosecuting, Paul Griffin said that one boy swung it by
its leg and another karate chopped its head before all three "stomped" it to
death.
Reading extracts from their police interviews, he said: "(one of the
17-year-olds) said 'For a laugh break its leg'.
"The deer was moving, it was trying to escape. Then they
all decided to kill it.
"He admitted that he and (the other 17-year-old) were
laughing because 'we thought we were having fun'.
"He accepted he had stomped on the fawn's ribs because
he thought it would be fun."
The teenager told police: "I got carried away and was
stupid. I thought it would be a laugh."
'Karate
chopped'
The court heard that the youngest defendant told police
he only nudged the fawn once with his foot and did not laugh like the others.
One of the older boys told police the fawn was already
injured and they were putting it out of its misery, the court was told.
Dog walker Keith Arthurs, 52, was so distressed by what
he saw he no longer goes to the park.
He told the court: "When I first saw the three youths in
the field, I decided then this didn't seem right, that's when I decided to phone
999.
"While I was on the phone to the services one of them
karate chopped the young fawn across its nose.
"It was still in the other youth's hands. His hands were
stretched in front of him. Quite clearly he had an expression on his face of an
enjoyment-type expression."
Dog
survives being dragged 2 miles behind truck in Port St. Lucie
By Tyler
Treadway, TCPalm
December
15, 2009
A
31-year-old man was arrested on animal cruelty charges for allegedly dragging a
dog nearly 2 miles behind his pickup truck.
According
to Port St. Lucie Police Department reports, Napoleon Davis, who told police he
was homeless and living with a brother in the 1500 block of Iffla Avenue, said he was taking the dog
to the Humane Society of St. Lucie County because his relatives would no longer
take care of it.
Police
spokesman Tom Nichols said the cab of Davis' truck "was full of stuff, and
rather than clean it up and put the dog up there where it belonged, he put it in
the back (of the truck)," tying the dog to a post in the truck bed with a
15-foot leash Monday morning.
The dog,
described as a small pit bull mix, apparently jumped out of the truck near Paar Drive and Darien Street and
was dragged to the 3200 block of Rosser
Boulevard, a distance of 1.9 miles, according to
police.
Nichols
said two people tried to stop the truck, "but it just kept going"
before another pair of passers-by managed to stop Davis.
"The
first people (who tried to stop the truck) called 911," Nichols said,
"and (Davis)
called 911 once he stopped."
Nichols
said Davis told
police he didn't know the dog had jumped out of the truck.
Davis was being
taken to the St. Lucie County Jail late Monday morning, Nichols said. The dog
was taken to Animal Hospital of West Port St. Lucie.
"She's
in pretty rough shape," Dr. Leonard Fox, a veterinarian at the clinic,
said of "Holly," the name given to the dog because of the Christmas
season. "She has road rash everywhere; and treating road rash is like
treating a burn victim. You can't stitch the wounds together. She'll have to
have her bandages changed every two to three days for a month."
Fox said
the worst injuries were to the dog's feet, which he said "look like ground
beef."
"She
was dragged so long on her back legs that what you might call her big toes were
worn down to the bone," Fox said, adding that at least three of the dogs
toes will have to be amputated in surgery planned Tuesday.
Fox said
the dog weighs 42 pounds and is between a year and 18 months old.
Treating
the dog is expected to cost from $1,000 to $1,500, Fox said.
David
Robertson, operations manager at the Humane Society's animal shelter in Fort Pierce, said that
estimate "could be just the tip of the iceberg. She's got some really
horrific injuries."
Fox said
his office will donate some of its services, and the Humane Society is dipping
into its emergency fund money.
"We'll
do whatever it takes," Fox said. "She's a good dog. She hasn't given us
a hard time, hasn't tried to bite anyone, even with all the work we've been
doing on her. I think she appreciates what we're trying to do."
The Holly
Fund has been set up by the Humane Society of St. Lucie County to help pay for
medical treatment for the dog dragged nearly 2 miles Monday morning in Port St.

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- The case of a man accused of dragging a dog behind a pickup truck in November http://www.wate.com/Global/story.asp?S=11450020 is scheduled for Knox County Felony Sessions court Friday morning.
Jimmy Lovell was arrested and charged November 3 with one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, which is a felony.
Witnesses called police to report seeing Lovell driving in the area
around Liberty Street with a little brown dog being dragged behind his
truck. The dog was tied with a rope.
The dog was eventually found abandoned along Sutherland Avenue.
Doctors at the UT Veterinary School say "Little Brown Dog" has made
remarkable progress healing from severe wounds on all four legs, over
her breast bone and on her knees.
The vet school says Little Brown Dog only has one bandage left. She had
two skin grafts. One took completely and the other mostly took.
The vets describe Little Brown Dog as a "diva" who loves to be petted. She will roll over and let people rub her belly.
Organizers presented a petition signed by more than 5,000 Facebook fans of Little Brown Dog http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=188423549216 to the Knox County District Attorney General's Office Thursday afternoon. It asks for Lovell to get the maximum sentence.
On Friday at 9:00 a.m., they'll hold a support rally at the courthouse.
The Facebook community, along with other animal lovers, has raised more
than $15,000 to pay the UT Vet School for the care of Little Brown Dog
and others like her. http://www.wate.com/global/story.asp?s=11656677
In their latest ploy to cause maximum damage to international forces
stationed in Afghanistan, the Taliban is using donkey suicide bombs to
attack British troops in southern Afghanistan.
Recently, a senior British Army officer and six other military personnel
survived an attack when a tethered donkey laden with explosives was
detonated as their armoured vehicle passed in southern Afghanistan.
"We'd spotted the donkey tethered to a tree as we were on our way down south
to monitor an operation that had been going on that day, but thought nothing
of it. There are donkeys around everywhere," ...

Bath County Kentucky Horror-Golden Hung!!!! November 14, 2009 8:08 PM
I received this information from one of my rescue buddies this morning. It actually addresses issues in three different places, although the primary focus is Bath County, Kentucky. If any of our group are in the Bath County, KY area, or Memphis, TN -- and all you great folks in the NYC neck of the woods -- please read this and do what you can. No matter where you are, please send an e-mail, make a phone call, or circulate this information to anybody you know who is or may know someone in those specific areas. We know animal abuse laws are too weak, but SURELY if enough people protest, they can be strengthened.
I am asking this simply on my own behalf, and I'm sending it to every rescue organization and rescue volunteer I know. I hope you will ALL be as outraged as I am.
This is long, and some of it is repetitive. I've tried to clean it up as much as I can. Y'all are smart people, you don't have to read something you've already read, but some things kind of ran together. Remember, there are three specific geographic areas addressed here, but the issue is the same -- ANIMAL ABUSE! I'll have to admit I could not bring myself to look at the pics. I have work to do and I can't get myself worked into a state where I'm bawling my head off all day.
Again, I ask this personally, not on behalf of this or any other rescue organization.
Thanks!

The idea below is a brilliant one -- emailing Oprah. Poor Eureka (the
co-organiser of the Firebull group) is very unwell at the moment, and I know
that this would give her a huge emotional boost to know that we are all emailing
Oprah to push this subject into the international spotight. PLEASE take the few
minutes it takes to ask Oprah. These poor animals can't ask for themselves.

Subject: The
dreaded FireBull Fiesta in Soria, Medicaneli - Spain is going ahead, despite
massive internet protests.
Dear Friends,
The dreaded FireBull
Fiesta in Soria, Medicaneli - Spain is going ahead, despite massive internet
protests. Various animal rights groups will be protesting on site.
Both the protesters and
the animals that are to be tortured need our strong, loving and protective
energy. The locals do attack the protesters (they did so last year) and it must
be an experience from hell to watch a live animal on fire, and being helpless to
stop the atrocity.
So I ask everyone at Care2
- please turn your thoughts to Spain this weekend - and send a clear mental
image that the use of an effigy is just as much 'fun' without inflicting
horrible pain on an animal, let alone the dehumanising effect it has on those
who set fire to and watch the bulls burn.
Our FireBull group is
literally a FOUNTAIN of information on this subject. Our mailing lists are the
most accurate on the internet. Our various topics are encyclopaedic on the
legal and moral points of this issue. Our Billboard looks 'busy', but it is
very well organised - making it easy for anyone to contribute an
ACTION.
I thank you for your
support, and as I type here I'm struggling for faith in a benevolent universe.
But if we concentrate on that which we want, rather than on that which we don't
want - we could swing the world on its axis!

Cart Horse Won't Walk - So Owner Sets It On
Fire!
Please send

A horse was
burnt alive in Santiago de Cali - Columbia
(translated) ====================================
Apparently
the animal refused to walk and that is why the owner poured gasoline over it and
set it alight. Posted on Friday October 23, 2009
The incident occurred
east of the capital of Valle Bonilla Aragon near the neighborhood. In a crop
of sugarcane, the villagers watched as 'Paul', the carter horse from a neighbor
was consumed by flames, eventually dying from burns.
"I immediately
called the 123 and moved the Environmental Police personnel. It was a rough
picture of animal cruelty," said Sgt Yovanni Ñáñez, commander of the
Environmental Police.
The animal, a pale horse bay, about 6 years, was
still alive. He suffered burns of first and third grade in 90 percent of his
body. The owner of the horse and his companion surprisingly argued that they
found the horse like that, and had planned to put it out of its
misery!
However, the police established that they poured gasoline over
the horse and set fire to it, because it had refused to walk.
Given the
seriousness of the injuries it was necessary to go to Municipal Zoonosis Center,
where it was decided to apply euthanasia to prevent further
suffering.
"What w e are asking the community to warn that when
situations of violence against animals of any species, reported immediately to
123 or phone 551 78 10," said Sgt Ñáñez, who recalled that this year the unit
has handled 230 cases, among which 130 have been
horses.

Dear Sir
This is to express my profound rejection of the
events of Friday 23 October in the city Santiago de Cali, in which a a horse was
burnt alive, because it did not wa nt to walk.
We ask you to strongly
consider the abolishment of the cart horse industry - because of the documented
repeated abuse!
The horses in Columbia daily suffer from terrible
neglect and abuse, but we believe with strong leadership and firm action from
your office Columbia's cart horses can be protected.
SAV has now
written to Commissioner Olli Rehn; EU Commissioner for Enlargement, expressing
our concerns regarding animal welfare legislation enforcement throughout the
Balkans.
Our four (4)
page letter has covered animal welfare issues in the following
states:
Serbia,
Macedonia, Bosnia and Hertzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro.
Over 25
rime links have been provided to Commissioner Rehn, each of these with many
sub links, showing Balkans animal suffering video footage which details our
concerns. A few examples are shown here:
We have
expressed our concerns that even when provided with such video evidence as this,
clearly showing those involved in animal abuses, nothing is being done by the
authorities to press charges; to
enforce the law. With regard Serbia, the Public Attorney would appear to be
dismissing all evidence provided. More details are provided in our
post:
We have
reminded Commissioner Rehn that (on his website) his very own words
declare:
The European
Union currently has 27 Member States. The Western Balkan
countries, Turkey and Iceland may also join once they meet the
conditions for membership. The aim of enlargement is simple: to
extend the area of peace, stability, democracy and the rule of
law, and prosperity and well-being throughout
Europe.
We pay
particular attention to democracy and the rule of law, as it
is felt that despite Serbian animal welfare campaigners through their right of
democracy, providing large amounts of evidence to Serbian
legislators, no action appears
to ever be taken by
Serbian authorities to apply the rule of
law.
If no action
(prosecutions) is being shown to be taken by Serbian legislators, then possibly
Serbia is not
meeting one of the aims of EU enlargement with
regard both democracy and the rule of
law.
Applying
the rule of law would mean
identifying (from the videos)
and prosecuting those involved with animal
abuses.
We are not
publishing a copy of the information provided to Commissioner Rehn, as we feel
that this is private between him and European citizens representing Serbian
Animals Voice with this evidence.
We have
requested that Commissioner Rehn now investigates animal welfare legislation
enforcement by Balkans states requiring EU membership, and have asked why (from
what we are informed by the Serbian Public Attorney and the police), they as
nations are allegedly NOT enforcing their own national legislation when it comes
to issues of animal welfare.
Ie. not applying the rule of law,
a fundamental condition
which needs to be shown to be
applied nationally by nations wishing to become future
members of the EU.
We now await
Commissioner Rehns responses on this important point of animal welfare
legislation within the Balkans.
Once we have
been provided with a response from Commissioner Rehn, will we then decide our
future route of action.
A
CIVILIZED NATION IS COMPASSIONATE TO ITS DEFENSELESS
MEMBERS.CONSTANT PAIN & STRESS
For the second year, the Norwegian animal organization
Nettverk for Dyrs Frihet (Network for Animal Freedom) has been running
independent inspections in Norwegian fur farms and have discovered shocking
conditions in which animals live. The extensive suffering they saw in nearly 50
fur farms is simply heartbreaking, and this just after the Norwegian minister of
Agriculture said that fur animals were treated humanely in Norway.
Who would question "ethical" fur coats from Norway which is
considered civilized? Norwegian animal caring people have a
different story to tell, and since bad habits die hard, fur animal abusers are
putting up a good fight against animal rights activists in Norway. Fearing the
negative repercussion it will cause to their business, efforts are being made to
discredit pro-animal groups who have dared to speak out against the atrocities.
As we all know, it is now fashionable to portray animal people as "radicals
& terrorists," thus, our counterparts in Norway need all the support
they can get at home and abroad. As usual, our mission is to offer support to
anti-fur activists worldwide, and our Norwegian friends do need our support so
they may be continue exposing the unimaginable cruelty of the bloody fur
trade.
Please watch the video so you may
have an idea of how much suffering Norwegian fur animals are enduring for vanity
and greed of the multi-million dollar fur industry. Sadly, we have no other choice, dear animal friends, than to ask you to
please help us speak out for fur bearing animals in Norway as well.
You may also learn more about the Norwegian group's
investigation, by accessing their website, also in English: http://www.forbypel s.no/english
The above information is déjà vu. About 3 years ago, the British journalist, Jonathan Owens, visited
a supposedly "top notch" fur farm in Norway, and wrote this article:

CATS EN ROUTE
TO GUANGZHOU:
Dear friends of Chinese animals,
For the last few years, we have been helping
Chinese animal caring people and each time we present a new group that so need
help in order to survive and flourish in their areas.
Last time, we introduced "New Beautiful World"
www.people4chineseanimals.org/Beautiful_New_World.html .
This is a group of 10 caring people who could no longer live with the suffering
of an overwhelming number of strays in their city. It's estimated that in
Beijing alone there are over 500,000 stray pets. This group has, for the last
five years, been responsible for spaying or neutering over 10,000 stray cats in
Beijing. Like BNW, there are so many more groups being formed all over China,
all struggling to help stray animals which so suffer being victims of abuse in
the streets and ending up in the meat/fur market.
For those who don't know, there are two cities
in China which are the starting points for the horrors that are perpetrated upon
stray or stolen pets. The poor victims somehow make their way either to the
cities of Nanking or Shanghai and then shipped to Guanghzou where the infamous
live meat market resides. For days, animals travel in the worst possible
conditions, packed in small cages and without food or water until they meet with
the most brutal killings that goes beyond anyone's imagination.
There have been outcries throughout China
about the horrors these loving animals endure. Be it a person who had his/her
pet stolen or just an animal caring person, they all agree that this nightmare
must stop. Unfortunately, their voices fall short in making an effective
political statement, but more people are becoming conscious of the tragedy which
appears to have no end in sight. Exactly because of this desperate condition,
people are going to the extreme of negotiating with cat-nappers who usually
carry false documentation when transporting the animals and the police can do
nothing. Thus, animal people end-up purchasing entire truck load of cats (as
many as 2000 at a time) to help stop the trade. In Shanghai alone, there have
been many such rescues this past year.
Whether the question is if it's wise to go on
rescuing so many pets when there is little infra-structure for them, the truth
is that these actions are having a positive effect as pet-nappers are beginning
to feel the heat. It is not as easy as before to go on stealing pets to send to
their hellish demise. Animal caring people in Shanghai and other cities are
becoming united against the criminals that are making a buck on so much blood
and suffering.
However, as we all know so well, these groups
also need help since they all operate on their own dime which vanishes very fast
when faced with several hundreds of cats at once.
At this time, I would like to introduce to you
this new wonderful group in Shanghai which has been responsible for incredible
acts of compassion and courage by rescuing over 3000 cats from cat-nappers. An
impressive percentage of these animals have all been adopted or returned to
their homes, but many are still homeless and being taken care of by this
compassionate grassroots group which so need our help: www.people4chineseanimals.org/GUANGDONG-CATS.html

As we have declared in recent posts on this site, the EU is doing nothing to prevent animal abuses and suffering; this is a typical example. The EU is only interested inn money.
The EU would appear to be keen for other animal abusing
nations to become members of its club, much to the detriment of
member states which DO show compassion towards animals.
WASHINGTON, DC (WUSA)--A dog is alive today thanks to a quick thinking DC resident.
According to the Washington Humane Society (WH, on Friday, August 7, in Southeast, a woman was throwing away garbage in her apartment dumpster on 9th Street. When the woman opened the dumpster door, she saw a bloodied dog's head covered in lacerations.
The woman called the Washington Humane Society (WH. When WHS Officer Eve Russell arrived, she pulled the dog, now named Trooper, out of the dumpster.
I still get many questions about how Troopers doing. You remember Trooper, the pitbull girl that was found tossed in a dumpster,
wrapped in a garbage bag in Washington DC, an apparant victim of
dogfighting? Well, shes recovered from her injuries, physically
anyway. Shell have some scarring but shes doing quite well. Another
story is her emotional recovery.
This girl was severely abused, not only physically, but shes also
going to have a chance to recover from her emotional abuse as well.
Now that shes physically healed, shes going to be moved to a special
rescue center at an undisclosed location. A place where other
dogfighting dogs have been rehabilitated.
They specialize in rehabbing fighting dogs and often times, dogs
are taken from big name dog fighters and those dogs are very, very
valuable. WHS Program Officer Scott Giacoppo says, I hate to say it,
but its almost like a witness protection program for dogs.
In this program, which is a privately
funded organization, dogs have their own rooms, no cages, a place to
swim, are assigned their own person who even stays with them overnight
at times. They get play, exercise, cuddling and of course, training.
And once Trooper is given the okay by behaviorists, shell then have
a chance to be adopted into a family and have the kind of life she
should have had.
When asked what happens if the experts dont give her the okay,
Giacoppo responded, If they find that shes too aggressive, well have
to look at other options.
I would guess that they would find a sanctuary for her where she can
still live out her life but since this place specializes in rehabbing
fighting dogs, Im sure Trooper will have the best chance and training
they can give her. So Im going to wish Trooper the best and give
thanks to all those who had a hand in caring for her and bringing her
back to health. Its wonderful that theres a place like this to give
her and other abuses dogs like her, a second chance. Good luck Trooper!!
Unfortunately, no one has ever been named as a suspect in Troopers
abuse to date, but hopefully the DC police have not given up and if
theres anything to go on, I like to believe they are following up on
it.
In
February, three chained pitbulls were found at a rental property, in
the 1100 block of Mitchell Street in Shelby, NC. The dogs had been
abandoned and starved to death. The dogs were found by a neighbor who
was cleaning his backyard when he noticed the chained up dogs and
immediately called the humane society.
The previous renter, Sylvia Short, 26, denied that she owned or abandoned the dogs.
It was her residence and no one elses, Assistant District
Attorney Katie Sawyer said. These dogs were starving as she was living
there.
These dogs were chained up with no way to feed or care for
themselves, said Sawyer. They were entirely at the mercy of human
beings to care for them.
I cant imagine the pain and agony of starvation and totally
helplessness as they were chained to trees, Marguerite Mebane,
president of the Cleveland County Humane Society said. Anyone that
could allow this to happen should never be allowed to own a pet.
Short was charged with three misdemeanor
counts of animal cruelty and earlier this week was found guilty by
District Court Judge Meredith A. Shuford. Short was sentenced to
supervised probation, had to pay fines and cannot have any animals
during the probation period.
There is no happy ending but there is some satisfaction that
justice was served for these animals who suffered immeasurably, said
Mebane.
Im sorry, but I dont see justice here! Three dogs, chained to
trees, totally at the mercy of this person, suffered a long, slow and
painful death in the middle of winter and Short is only charged with
misdemeanors and given probation . where is that justice?? These should
have been felony charges and she should be in jail!!
And she continues to deny that the dogs were hers. How do you live
in a house with three dogs chained up outside, that dont belong to you
and not know it? Dogs that no doubt barked and cried and begged for

The Pennsylvania SPCA said it received a tip on Sept. 26th that a man named James Davis, 19, of the 2100 block of 22nd Street in Philadelphia had duct taped the cat.
Then, the PSPCA said it received a call a few hours later, from Davis, to admit to the crime.
Davis was arrested in Sunday. He faces up to two years in prison on an animal cruelty charge.
Action News learned that Davis lost his father and brother to murders in recent years. He is undergoing a mental evaluation.
ASU to Be Investigated for Possible Animal Cruelty September 26, 2009 8:52 PM
An investigation was launched today by the U.S. Department of Agriculture into possible animal abuse in classrooms at Arizona State University that results from a complaint filed this morning by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Normally, we tend to take anything from PETA with several grains of salt, but it may actually have a legitimate argument here.
In the complaint, PETA asserts that ASU is inhumanely killing animals when there are several non-animal methods that could be used to teach the same information.
PETA claims that in basic anatomy and physiology classes, students inject rabbits with drugs after a hole has been cut in the animals' chests -- so the undergraduates can watch the reaction of the rabbits' hearts and blood pressure. PETA claims the animals are then killed.
In another cuddly experiment at ASU, PETA alleges, students sticki pins through the heads of frogs and then dissect them while their hearts are still beating.
ASU did not immediately respond to phone calls placed this afternoon, but we're hoping a representative does, because if this stuff is true and it's not being done to cure cancer or AIDS, it seems sick.
"Killing animals in these archaic experiments is unjustifiable, especially when humane alternative methods are available," Kathy Guilermo, PETA vice president of laboratory Iivestigations, says in a statement. "Arizona State University has shown an apparent disregard for the letter and spirit of animal protection law and guidelines."
Justin Goodman, a research supervisor at PETA, says there are better, more humane ways to teach the information, like computer simulations and experiments on classmates.
Hope the latter don't involve holes in the chest and pins in the head.
"Most animal experiments are a result of archaic traditions and personal bias," he says. "New non-animal methods are state of the art."
Goodman says PETA found out about the experiments when several students complained to the organization.
In a THV update, animal cruelty charges could still be filed against a
man accused of driving drunk and dragging his horse behind his truck.
The Humane Society tells Today's THV that the horse, now named
Lucky, is doing well but it will be several months before they know if
he will pull through.
The Independence County Sheriff's Office says they are pursuing
animal cruelty charges against Danny Ferguson. However, those charges
have not yet been filed.
Ferguson was allegedly driving drunk and pulling the horse in a
trailer behind his truck. Investigators say the trailer came apart, the
horse fell out and was dragged.
More than three and a half years after being convicted on numerous animal cruelty charges, an Arkansas woman will be sentenced.
Tammy Hanson fled before she could be sentenced, but early this morning she was extradited from Vermont to Arkansas. ... In late 2005, investigators found nearly 600 abused dogs on their property near Mountain Home.
On September 14, Bronx resident Ronald Ross, 33, was arrested by
ASPCA Special Agent Adam Gankiewicz and charged with felony animal
cruelty for allegedly kicking his mothers cat, Meow, in the face.
According to Rosss mother, the incident occurred on the morning of
August 21, when after searching the apartment for her missing cat, she
found Meow hiding under her sons bedher face traumatized. When
confronted about the cat's condition, her son reportedly laughed before
admitting to kicking the cat repeatedly in the face with his steel-toe
boots. The woman rushed Meow to ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital,
where the cat was treated for injuries, including several broken teeth
and a ruptured eye that was surgically removed.
Following the attack, the Bronx District Attorney filed a
restraining order against Ross on behalf of his mother, who
subsequently had the locks of her apartment changed. Under these
conditions, Meow returned home where she is now recuperating.
Ross was indicted by a Bronx grand jury on charges of felony
aggravated animal cruelty and misdemeanor animal cruelty, which is a
lesser offense. If convicted, he could face up to two years in jail and
a $2,000 fine.
Stacy Wolf, Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for ASPCA Humane
Law Enforcement, applauded the swift action of the grand jury in
indicting Ross on multiple counts in this case. Inflicting such severe
injury on a helpless cat signals the potential for violence directed at
other vulnerable victims, including human family members. Serious
criminal sanctions are a vital tool in the fight against these vicious
crimes.

Thrown, dropped, mutilated, and ground-up alive. This is the shocking
reality faced by hundreds of thousands of chicks each day at the
world's largest egg-laying breed hatchery - Hy-Line International in

New hidden camera footage obtained at this facility during a Mercy
for Animals undercover investigation gives a disturbing glimpse into
the cruel and industrialized reality of modern hatcheries.
The warm, comforting, and protective wings of these newly hatched
chicks' mothers have been replaced with massive machines, quickly
moving conveyor belts, harsh handling, and distressing noise. These
young animals are sorted, discarded, and handled like mere cogs in a

We were horrified to hear that
a primary school in Kent was sending a sheep to slaughter.
Understandably, many of the children who had cared for Marcus were
distraught. Refusing our calls to let Marcus live out his days on a
sanctuary and teach children a valuable lesson in compassion the
school sent him to the abattoir.
This sad case also raised
important questions about what we tell our children. Whilst we firmly
believe that they should know where their food comes from, this
Disneyfied example of farming did not represent the reality of life for
farmed animals in the UK today.

(Sept. 22) - A second arrest has been made in a recent spate of gruesome killings of at least 19 horses in Florida.
According to the Miami Herald,
Santiago Cabrera, 19, of Hialeah, Fla., was picked up by police on
Monday night and charged with armed burglary, animal cruelty, killing a
registered breed horse and breaking a fence.
Equine meat brings such high prices because some people believe that consuming it can cure diseases like cancer and AIDS.
Cabrera's arrest
follows that of 18-year-old Luis Miguel Cordero, who was picked up by
police last week. Undercover police officers approached Cordero, who
stands accused of killing a horse at Lazy L Ranch in North Maimi-Dade
County, and offered him $2,000 to slaughter another horse. Cordero
agreed and was promptly arrested, the paper said.
Animal protection
groups such as the ASPCA point out that there is no evidence whatsoever
to suggest that eating horse meat helps fight AIDS or cancer. South
Florida's multicultural community, however, is made up of many
residents who come from countries where it is customary to eat horse
meat, CNN reported.

Beaumont police expect to charge a woman Friday with animal cruelty.
Detective Tina Lewallen told KFDM News investigators plan to file
the misdemeanor charge in connection with the death of a dog police say
was emaciated.
Officers found a dead dog Monday in the backyard of a home at 1675 Roberts Street in Beaumont.
The owner of the dead dog told police that although she had moved from the home in June, she returned to feed the dog each day.
Witnesses said it had been left chained in the yard for weeks without food or clean water.
Police discovered a Golden Retriever lying near the dead dog. They
say it was a stray and had befriended the dog, even bringing it food.
Beaumont Animal Control will observe the dog through Monday and then place it for adoption.
every morning I wake up praying for something good to happen by way of our precious furrkids...my inbox seems to double with the need for homes and justice for those who were not shown love....never knew a kind word or gentle touch. I pray that the old saying " the gates of heaven will be lined with animals and they will be the ones to judge who passes thru"......is indeed an actual truth.......I believe in karma....
A bunch of activist friends are helping them since last night. The roads
are gone, the Government says there is no problem in the area, so probably we
are all dreaming about these nonsense pictures. Turkish Government wants all the
stray animals dead. That is the point. They will not help none of them. Another
storm will begin tonight and there isn it much we can do. i am trying to find a
big depot to put some 200 cats from Fatih Mosque but who will helps the other
thousands of strays?
Our friends are in the below shelter (so called shelter) since yesterday.
They are trying to carry one by one and transport 200 meter by foot the dogs.
From 280 , 130 are dead being traped in the cages. And the others are hungry,
cold, thrusty. All the cats, small dogs are dead. And the one to blame is...the
one who said there is not such a problem..
The rescuers needs food, medicines and some other shelters..
Please help us to stop animal abuses in Turkey. this got out of hand
now...

On May 6, 2009, Cheyenne Cherry (age 17) of the Bronx, New York, and a
14-year-old accomplice (whose name has not been revealed due to her age)
ransacked the home of Cherrys ex-roommate, Valerie Hernandez. Not content to
limit their destructive rage to Hernandez's apartment, in an act of unspeakable
viciousness they stuffed Hernandezs kitten, Tiger Lily into a hot
oven and left her there to burn to death.
Cherry admitted to the police that the two fled the apartment so that
they wouldnt hear the kitten screaming and desperately scratching at the oven
door. At her court appearance, Cherry admitted that she left the
apartment knowing the kitten was in the oven with the heat turned up to 500
degrees. She told police that action was committed as a joke.
The shocking case of animal cruelty is expected to come to a close next week
with the probationary review of Cheyenne Cherry in Bronx Supreme Court.
A plea bargain in July reduced Cherrys felony animal cruelty
charge to a misdemeanor, though she was convicted on the felony
burglary charge. She was sentenced to one year for felony burglary and one year
for misdemeanor animal cruelty, to run concurrently (one year total).
However, at the July 31 hearing for sentencing, it was revealed that Cherry
had violated her probation. Not surprisingly, Cheyenne Cherry is a dangerous
criminal with a prior record of armed robbery. We say "not surprisingly" because
the link between violence to other species and violence to people has
been conclusively proven, so much so that the link is utilized by FBI
profilers.
Adolescents who commit brutal crimes against people usually begin with
non-human animals. Indeed, the intentional burning of an animal is a
"particularly significant predictor of violent and even homicidal behavior,"
says Dr. Randall Lockwood of the ASPCA's Anti-Cruelty Initiatives and a frequent
law enforcement consultant.
The case has been adjourned to October 2 for probationary review, so all
comments must be received by the Judge by October 1. IDA is
hopeful that the latest additional information about Cherrys violation of
probation will lead Judge Clancy to conclude the two one-year sentences
should run consecutively, not concurrently.
Polite letters are needed to Judge Margaret Clancy to ask that the two
sentences run consecutively so there is independent punishment for the animal
cruelty charge. Scroll down for talking points for your letter, and contact
information for the Judge.
The unnamed 14-year-old was sentenced to 18 months in juvenile detention.
According to news accounts, she was the initiator of the plan to place Tiger
Lily in a hot oven, though Cherry made the decision that they should flee to
avoid hearing the kittens cries.

It is important to keep letters polite to be effective. This
case has generated a great deal of anger, but that anger should not be vented on
the Judge. Write (and fax) to:
Case #:02546-2009 RE: Cheyenne Cherry Honorable Judge Margaret
Clancy Bronx County Supreme Court 265 East 161st Street Bronx, NY
10451 Fax: 718-618-3573
Talking Points:
Thank Judge Clancy for this review of the case, expressing that you
are hopeful the review will result in a longer jail sentence for someone with
such a violent past.
Emphasize that Cherry is a repeat offender, with two prior armed robberies.
Cherry should be barred from ever "owning" or working with animals in the
future. In July, Judge Clancy ruled that Cherry be barred from "owning" animals
for only 3 years. This is not enough. Given the reckless disregard for animal
suffering she exhibited in this case, and her lack of remorse reported in the
press, the prohibition should be imposed permanently.
Ask the Judge for Post Release Supervision of Cherry along with
psychological counseling for both Cherry and her juvenile
accomplice. This is extremely important because of the tendency for
animal abusers to commit repeat offenses, as well as escalate crimes. Adequate
psychological counseling for both Cherry and her accomplice is the only way to
address the root cause of their violent actions and total lack of empathy for
living beings.

species. Indeed, the intentional burning of a non-human animal is a
"particularly significant predictor of violent and even homicidal behavior,"

been confirmed and cited by the FBI.
Foxes 'Used As Live Bait For Fighting Dogs' September 17, 2009 7:02 AM
Gangs with dogs and nets have been spotted hunting in woodland in the Rotherhithe area of the capital.
Two dead foxes have been found and three dead cats have also been discovered "ripped to pieces".
Wildlife campaigners believe the foxes are caught and used as bait for dogs ahead of illegal fights.
Posters have been nailed to trees in the Russia Dock Woodland park in Rotherhithe warning of the problem.
Members
of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland and the Trust For Urban Ecology
(TRUE) met with local councillors and residents at an emergency meeting
this week.
Police have launched an investigation.
Rebeka Clark from TRUE, which has a base at the park, said dog walkers had reported seeing gangs going into the woods at night.
Others have been spotted at an old football stadium in the area where foxes are known to live in the base of the stand.
Ms Clark said: "I believe people are killing or stealing the foxes which are then used as bait for dogs.
"Two
young foxes have been found dead without injury or disease which
suggests they have died of shock from being chased or held.
"Three cats have also been found completely ripped to pieces. The matter has been referred to the police."
Steve
Cornish, chairman of The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland, said he
understood that gangs were catching the foxes and using them to bait
dogs.
"We have had reports that the foxes are thrown in with the
dogs to get them into a frenzy, to keep them in a fighting state ahead
of bouts.
"Gangs have been spotted by the football stadium with nets, trapping the animals and taking them away."
Southwark's wildlife crime officer Pc Mark Wood said police were investigating the reports.
He
said: "We are working with the owners of the park. We are at an early
stage of the investigation and we are looking at instances of foxes
being killed."
The second year running, independent inspections have uncovered
shocking conditions on Norwegian fur farms. The organisation Nettverk
for Dyrs Frihet (Network for Animal Freedom) has uncovered extensive
animal suffering on nearly 50 fur farms, this just two months after the
Norwegian minister of agriculture and food said fur breeding animals
were treated well.
A Wellington gathering of the caregivers who look after animals used in scientific research has not been disrupted by protests staged by anti-vivisection protestors, says one of its organisers.
Protesters have said they plan a street protest tomorrow night.
Malcolm France, president of the Australia and New Zealand Laboratory Animal Association (ANZSLAA) said the conference at the Duxton Hotel was continuing. ... A spokesman for the Wellington Animal Rights Network, Mark Eden, alleged the people at the conference were "directly responsible" for the deaths of thousands of animals in laboratories around the country.
"They should not be allowed to walk the streets and have conferences where they admire the surgery tools and cages on display, and talk about how they can improve their animal killing techniques".

1. Brooklyn Man Arrested for Neglecting Aging Pet On
August 11, Vincent Turzio was arrested by ASPCA Special Agent Kristi

Bella the Chihuahua died in February. Authorities say the dog was beaten to death by Frank Coppola.
A Staten Island
man was arrested Wednesday for beating his girlfriend's 5-pound
Chihuahua to death - after he claimed the dog "ran into a wall."
Frank Coppola
was charged with one count of felony animal cruelty and misdemeanor
animal cruelty for killing the tiny 3-year-old pooch named Bella,
according to Joseph Pentangelo of the ASPCA.
The incident took place Feb. 28 when Coppola was left alone with the little dog in an apartment he shared with her owner, Melissa DePietro.
Coppola called DePietro and told her there "was a problem" with the dog, according to Pentangelo.
They rushed the dog to a local veterinarian but the badly bruised pup died.
Under questioning by the vet, Coppola claimed the dog had "run into a wall." But authorities say she was beaten to death.
"The dog had broken ribs and bleeding in the lungs," Pentangelo said.
After
an investigation assisted by the Staten Island district attorney's
office, Coppola was arrested by ASPCA Special Investigator Paul Romano.
He was released on $2,500 bail.
Coppola's lawyer, Joseph Sorrentino, said there is no evidence linking his client to the heinous crime.
"Mr. Coppola vehemently denies these charges," he said.
SPCA inspectors have removed the partially-charred body of a pet dog being cooked in a backyard barbecue.
But they cannot prosecute anyone over its death because it had been killed "humanely".
Frustrated SPCA Auckland chief executive Garth Halliday revealed it isn't illegal to kill and then eat a dog in New Zealand if the animal is slaughtered in a swift and painless manner.
Halliday said shocked inspectors had evidence that backyard dog barbecues were becoming more common.
Paea Taufa, found roasting the pitbull terrier-cross in an umu at his Mangere home, said dog was a Tongan culinary delicacy.
"If we eat heaps of... pig you get a (sore) stomach. But when we eat ... dog, it doesn't matter how much you eat, nothing is wrong with the tummy," Taufa told Sunday News. Mary Lyn Fonua, managing editor of the Nuku'alofa-based Matangi Tonga news website, said dogs were eaten in Tonga but usually by desperately poor people.
"People do eat dog. But you can't go to the market and buy dog meat," Fonua said.
This woman has a screw loose - only someone who is mentally retarded would keep a puppy in a closet for months. Since she herself needs a toilet for her own ablutions, just where in hell did she think the pup had to do its 'business'?

State police say dog carcasses and dog fighting paraphernalia
were also seized when the Indiana Gaming Commission and other agencies
executed search warrants Tuesday in Orange County.
Adam Parascandola of the Humane Society of the United States says many dogs had scars and marks consistent with fighting.
Thirty-nine-year-old Brian E. Denny of French Lick was arrested

Its
sad enough when someone gets a dog and then confines it to a chain or
yard all its life but can someone in their right mind possibly tell me
why anyone would get a puppy then stick it in a closet to live for 8 or
10 months until it died from the heat? Well, thats just what Lauren
Masterson, 20, of Beaverton, OR did!
She got a little rat terrier puppy and that tiny little puppy, Milo,
lived in a 3′ by 4′ patio storage closet in her apartment until it died
recently from the heat. Oh, she said she took the puppy out to play
with it occasionally but complained that the puppy always did its
business in the closet so that it was constantly filled with urine and
feces.
When she found the puppy dead, she just dumped it in the trash.
Amazingly, she actually did contact the
police, thinking she may have been responsible for the puppys death
duh!! Now why would she be responsible? She only confined a puppy to a
dark, stinking hole for months on end, leaving it to suffer and
languish in the summer heat until it died stupid waste of life!
She was arrested and charged with animal cruelty, sadly only a
misdemeanor, released the next day and will appear in court On August
10.
Now this POS will get her little slap on the wrist, a fine, maybe
probation but she will never face the hell that tiny puppy suffered
through its whole short life. There will never be justice and Masterson
will be free to do the same thing again! God forbid she ever has
children, one can only imagine what they will face at her hands. This
poor puppy is now free from her cruelty and abuse, but what about her
next victim . will there be one and who or what will it be?? What a
scary thought!
The Rudd government says it will continue to support Australian Wool Innovation despite the industry group's failure to meet a deadline to abandon the controversial practice of mulesing.
The wool growing industry's peak representative group on Monday announced it would not be able to meet a deadline to eliminate mulesing by the end of 2010 because a viable alternative had not been found.
The deadline was introduced five years ago as part of an industry-led commitment to abandon mulesing which involves removing skin from a sheep's backside to reduce the risk of flystrike.
Animal rights groups say mulesing is cruel and have launched campaigns calling for a boycott of wool that comes from mulesed sheep.
BOARDMAN The pastor of an East Western Reserve Road church is charged with animal cruelty.
Timothy L. Hayes, 35, is charged in Mahoning County Court with five counts of animal cruelty. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 6. ... Township police were called to 102 E. Two boys, ages 11 and 12, were charged with cruelty to animals after they allegedly helped to burn a kitten, according to Detective Albert Murray with the Macon Police Department.
Murray says they are also looking for an older man in connection with the case, but would not give any more details.
Murray says the two boys were involved in the burning of the kitten at 2175 Merriwood Drive on Sunday.
The boys were arrested Monday and released to their mothers, with a court date scheduled for next month.
The Hayward Junior Rodeo takes place at the Rowell Ranch in Hayward,
California on Saturday and Sunday, August 1 & 2, beginning each day
at 9:00 a.m.
This rodeo is for children ages 6 through 18, and will
feature 19 different events. Of particular concern are the calf roping,
bull riding, and goat tying events.
Goat tying is especially traumatic for the animals. A young goat is
tethered at one end of the arena. A child on horseback gallops to the
goat, dismounts, then throws and ties the hapless and terrified animal.
Sometimes the horse runs right over the goat. (Click here to see video on YouTube.)
Goat tying has absolutely nothing to do with life on a working
ranch. It's basic rodeo training prior to graduation to calf
roping. The Rowell Ranch rodeo policy allows each goat to be thrown and
tied a total of five times per day. And how long before a child gets
a hoof in the eye? At the very least, it's bad parenting to allow
a child to take part in such a potentially lethal event. Some would
call it child endangerment. We call it cruelty to animals - and child endangerment.
Please write/email the Hayward Area Recreation & Park District
and ask them to discontinue this cruel event, for the sake of the
animals as well as the children. This mistreatment of animals sends the
wrong message to the children involved - it desensitizes them to animal cruelty and suffering.

Here are two experts' statements to help you prepare your comments:
1) Peggy W. Larson, DVM: "As a former large animal
veterinarian, a pathologist, meat inspector and former bareback bronc
rider, I don't have to imagine the trauma these young, small goats
sustain in this ridiculous, cruel event. The injuries and the pain are
real. There must be some collective mental vacuum in the rodeo crowd
that would find this event fun. Substitute a 40 pound dog in this event
and the roper would wind up in court for animal cruelty, probably
felony animal cruelty in most states. These events are inhumane and
cruel and must end."
2) Capt. Cindy Machado, Chief Humane Officer, Marin Humane Society:
"The [YouTube] video accurately depicts what happens, but doesn't show
the extent of injuries that these goats and sometimes horses can
suffer. Lots of tangling issues, rope burns, dislocated legs, sometimes
broken necks/legs... I would argue that it could be considered cruelty
under Penal Code 597(b)..."

animals were in pens within 30 feet of the house, and some of the living ones
were eating the dead ones.
Animal
control workers and volunteers spent considerable time cleaning up the mess.
Veterinarians
were able to save some of the animals, some of which were shipped out to animal
refuges from North Carolina to Rhode Island.
Hedrick
had been convicted of animal cruelty within the past year and got a suspended
jail sentence.
Robin Tarabochia,
Hedrick's attorney, said two
veterinarians who examined the animals and the property concluded that Hedrick
did not intentionally mistreat the animals.
She said
Hedrick has a history of taking in unwanted animals and ended up with so many
it became "overwhelming."
Tarabochia
described Hedrick as an animal lover and said she once worked for an animal
rescue league in California.
Tarabochia
requested and received permission for an evaluation of Hedrick's mental state before her sentencing.

DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) - The stench in one metro Detroit neighborhood is unbearable as police make a startling find. They removed dozens and dozens of dogs from a single home in Dearborn and they have to return to collect the others.
The homeowner is not currently in police custody, but he could be facing animal cruelty or neglect charges. Police are still trying to determine whether he was hoarding, breeding or selling the dogs. Meanwhile, the house has been deemed unfit for human habitation. The homeowner says he had 80 dogs in the house and, so far, half of them have been rescued.
"The smell is worse than sewage," said Linda Shanks. The stench coming from a house on Orchard Avenue in Dearborn was so severe that onlookers were covering their faces. "Look at his yard," said shanks. "You would never believe what's beyond the doors." A house in horrible condition and dozens of dogs, 42 and counting.
More details are emerging about the wounding and later euthanizing of pigs at a Valley Center avocado grove where local Marines and sailors are being taught how to perform emergency first aid. Authorities won't comment on reports some pigs are being shot and others stabbed.
Wounding animals to train troops for battlefield carnage has been criticized by groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. The organization has asked the military to halt the practice, petitioning the Obama administration for an executive order instituting a ban.
The "live tissue training" exercises provide Navy medical corpsmen, doctors and frontline troops with the skills needed to save lives by learning how to staunch bleeding from massive wounds and open blocked airways, the Marine Corps said.
Pigs are given an anesthetic and pain medication before being wounded and are euthanized when the procedures are complete. Officials will not say how the pigs are wounded, but the animal rights organization claims that pigs used in similar training are stabbed, shot, and in some cases, poisoned.

Shooting of 50 dogs by Ariz.
county draws criticism By GLEN CRENO and ALEX
DALENBERG
Arizona state and national animal rights groups are criticizing the
decision by animal control officers to shoot and kill more than 50 dogs
owned by a man who was in jail for a month in early May and couldn't take
care of them.
Anna-Marie Rea, who heads the shelter where Navajo County usually takes
stray dogs, said the agency could have handled the dogs if someone had
called. "Shooting is not a humane way to end an animal's suffering,"
said Rea, executive director of the Humane Society of the White Mountains
in Lakeside. The dogs were owned by Edward Harvey, who lives in a rural
area outside of Heber in northeast Arizona. Harvey said he took in stray
dogs, pets he called "my babies." He said he had been jailed on a gun
violation in early May and couldn't make bail. He was released after about
a month. County officials said the dogs were aggressive and would have
been difficult to round up. They said the dogs would have died on the trip
in the animal-pickup vans, which aren't air-conditioned. Instead, the
dogs were shot by animal control. Dr. Wade Kartchner, director of the
county's health department, which oversees animal control, defended the
actions of the officers. "We do feel like the decision made in the
field was the right one to prevent suffering for the animals," he
said. Harvey still can't talk about their deaths without becoming
emotional. "That's more punishment than I deserve," he said. "No one
needs to be treated that way, especially animals." Rea said the
shooting should not have happened. She said her agency could have
dispatched a euthanasia technician, food, water and kennels to the site.
She also said the Humane Society has enough vehicles and volunteers with
trucks and trailers to transport large amounts of animals safely. Even
if some of the dogs couldn't be moved from the site because they were too
wild or too sick, she said the Humane Society had the resources to safely
euthanize them at the site. The national Humane Society and the group
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals also are criticizing the
shooting. Betsy McFarland, senior director for companion animals at the
Humane Society of the United States, said there had to be a better way to
handle the situation. She said the county needs to find better vehicles
and said the group could help with animal-control
training. "Animal-control departments and the Humane Society around the
country have dealt with situations where a large number of animals that
need to be contained and humanely dealt with without resorting to shooting
the animals," she said. PETA sent a letter to the Navajo County
Attorney's Office calling for an investigation into the shooting. Navajo
County Attorney Brad Carlyon said any investigation would be up to the
Sheriff's Office, which said it wasn't planning one. Some of the dead
dogs were at the home when Harvey returned. He said he also was shocked to
find carcasses inside the home. Kartchner said his officers couldn't
remove some of the dogs because they were under debris or in the midst of
dog and human feces. He denied any dogs were left inside. Bernard
Huser, chief deputy of the Sheriff's Office, said living conditions at the
trailer were "pitiful," unhealthy for Harvey's teenage daughter. He said
about 30 guns were taken from the house.
An Oahu man whose wife died last week had his animals taken, all 400 of them. It took nine different animal welfare groups several days to transfer all the animals to an emergency shelter. The conditions in which the animals were found could lead to animal cruelty charges by the Hawaiian Humane Society.
These dogs are now being cared for at a temporary shelter after being found in deplorable conditions at a Waianae home, along with cats birds and rabbits. In all, more than 400 animals were rescued by a team of 50 volunteers; some had flown in from the mainland. They found some animals had been living among carcasses.
The dogs died at the police headquarters at
Sherwood Lodge
A police officer is to face prosecution over the
deaths of two police dogs in Nottinghamshire, BBC News has
learned.
The German shepherd dogs were found dead in a private vehicle
outside Nottinghamshire Police's headquarters on 30 June.
Legal proceedings will be brought against an officer for
allegedly causing unnecessary suffering to the animals, the RSPCA
confirmed.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed the officer has been suspended.
A police spokesperson said: "Following a review of the
circumstances into the deaths of two police dogs, Nottinghamshire
Police has taken the decision to suspend the police officer
involved.
"An internal inquiry is also continuing."
The Met Office said it reached 28.1C (82.5F) in Nottingham on 30
June.
The RSPCA has said the force reported the incident to them on the
day it happened and had co-operated with the charity in the
investigation.
Anyone convicted of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal
could face up to six months in prison and a £20,000 fine.
When Pearl River County supervisor Sandy Kane Smith went to the abandoned gas station in McNeill, nothing in his life prepared him for the sight and smell of the dead and dying dogs abandoned there.
"I have seen a lot of things in my life, especially on my grandmother's farm," said Smith, "But I have never seen anything like this. Just to see those dogs tied up the way they were, well, there are not words to describe it."
Four dogs were found dead behind an abandoned gas station in McNeill earlier this month. The owner, Alicia Goynes, has been charged with six counts of animal cruelty. Goynes has defended herself, saying she had been on vacation and had left the dogs in the care of a woman she has not named.
Smith, has promised to study what options the board of supervisors has to enact laws that would have more bite to them against people who commit acts of animal cruelty. He said even the process they had to go through in order to save the lone surviving dog was arduous.
"We couldn't just take the dog out of there, we had to get a (seizure) warrant and that took all day," Smith said.
DUSTY: You are so right. It does seem that it takes the loss of a human life for them to notice. When are people going to realize that animals are living, breathing beings also. Beings that feel as we do.
Bernadette..............if you have the link to the story, please post it here. I rarely get to the care2 news anymore (too much bickering at times for my taste) but I do note those stories sent to me by others (and take actions)....... Dana...great to see you back and posting responses to these articles.....I do not understand what is happening to our youth. We need some sort of class for companion animals/preventing abuse or something in the schools (yet they're talking about cutting back on school days now due to lack of money/funding) Something needs to be done to prevent these kids from doing this stuff in the first place...and making them (and the parents) accountable for their actions. I guess it will take them killing a "human being" before anyone wakes up and then we can all sit back and say "I told you so".....could have been prevented but no one cared.
BILLINGS - Less than a week before her trial was scheduled to begin, Linda Kapsa has changed her plea in Billings District Court.
Kapsa plead no contest Thursday morning to one count of aggravated animal cruelty. In return, prosecutors dropped all other charges. Kapsa was charged with two counts of animal cruelty after authorities confiscated more than 200 dogs from her Ballantine kennel last December.
As part of the plea agreement, the State will ask for a 20 year suspended sentence with the Department of Corrections. They will also ask that Kapsa only be allowed to keep six spayed or neutered dogs while Kapsa wants to keep 20 animals.
I am writing in regard to the Darby kid responsible for the cat burning case.
The article stated that his age would have something to do with his conviction and the case is closed. I don't understand this. This is a terrible example to the young people of our society. How are we going to teach them right from wrong at these early ages if we don't prosecute somehow. This is extreemly disheartening.
He needs to be punished and sent to therapy for his actions. Not that this should be the singular reason for recognizing animal abuse but it has also been proven to be a link with human abuse as well. Most (if not all) our serial killers started out with animals.
I thought the authorities were sworn in to protect all of God's creatures. He needs to be taught that the cruelty to any living being is not going to be tolerated and to learn love and respect.
I do hope you appreciate my standing in this issue.
A 9-year-old Darby boy has been taken into custody and turned over to the county's Children and Youth Services (CY department in connection with a cat found fatally burned on Sunday, according to police. "He's under an age that we would charge (him)
Sheriffs deputies alleged Weichel shot an adult male tabby with a bow and arrow on March 13 at his familys home northeast of Lincoln. The arrow went through the cat but didnt kill it.
Then, deputies say, Kratz picked the cat up by the tail and hit it against a picnic table twice, then dropped a log on the cat.
I am writing concerning the poor kitty that was tortured and killed by the two boys who shot it with a bow and arrow, picked the cat up by the tail and hit it against a picnic table twice, then dropped a log on it. There is NO excuse for this sort of behavior. These teens are not "just being teens". Good people just don't do acts as this.
They are a terrible example to the young people of our society. They need to be punished AND sent to therapy for their actions. They are old enough to know better and old enough to be prosecuted.
Not that this should be the singular reason for recognizing animal abuse but it has also been proven to be a link with human abuse as well. Most (if not all) our serial killers started out with animals.
I do hope the authorities remember that they were sworn in to protect all of God's creatures. I also hope that she gets the maximum in fines, jail time and psychological counseling. She needs to be taught that the cruelty to any living being is not going to be tolerated and to learn love and respect.
I do hope you appreciate my standing in this issue.

Suspect in South Miami-Dade cat killings arraigned
BY DAVID OVALLE
dovalle@MiamiHerald.com
In interviews with police, accused cat killer Tyler Weinman eagerly
described how to dissect cats, even describing the ''tearing sound''
made when cutting open a feline's body, according to an arrest
affidavit released Monday.
Miami-Dade police detectives concluded that Weinman fits the bill of a ``sociopath.''
Weinman, accused of killing and mutilating 19 cats in South Miami-Dade, was formally charged Monday in Miami-Dade court.
Prosecutors at Monday's arraignment made public a previously secret
arrest warrant affidavit detailing the evidence used to arrest Weinman
last month.
Among evidence cited in a largely circumstantial case:
Twice during the killing spree, officers found Weinman near where
mutilated cats were found. Once, he wore all black and a backpack --
and laughed when an officer suggested he keep his cats indoors.
On May 15, when officers stopped him during a nighttime traffic stop,
they found a ''cutting tool'' he apparently threw outside his driver's
side window. The tool was impounded; Weinman was arrested for marijuana
possession.
During that arrest, Weinman claimed he got prominent scratches on his
body from feeding a stray cat at his mother's house; he eagerly showed
the scratches off to detectives.
Police outfitted an electronic tracking device to his car that placed him in the immediate area of one killing on June 6.
The teen, at length, described dissecting cats, which he learned
during an anatomy class at Palmetto Senior High. He noted that cats for
dissection could only be received from Mexico.
''It's really important to note that there is not one single, not one
single witness in there that says that Tyler Wienman touched a cat -
not one witness,'' David Macey, Weinman's attorney, said after Monday's
arraignment.
The 18-year-old is accused of killing the cats in a monthlong spree
that terrorized Cutler Bay and Palmetto Bay pet owners and drew
national headlines.
He is charged with 19 counts of felony animal cruelty, 19 counts of
improperly disposing of an animal body and four counts of burglary.
Weinman is free on $249,500 bond and is on house arrest while he awaits
trial.
He has pleaded not guilty.
A Miami-Dade judge had given prosecutors until Monday to release the
arrest warrant affidavit, which was sealed as investigators looked at
charging other suspects believed connected to the killings.
A soldier accused of animal cruelty has been reduced in rank and faces separation from the Army amid news reports that he is suspected of killing his familys dog.
Spc. Franklyn Zimmerman, 22, of Fort Bliss, Texas, was reduced to E-1 and punished under Article 15 of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice, according to officials at Fort Bliss. The officials declined to provide any details but confirmed that Zimmerman was punished on an animal cruelty charge.
The officials declined to speak further because an Article 15 is nonjudicial punishment, and additional details of the case are protected by the Privacy Act.
Information released June 19 by Fort Bliss officials said Zimmerman is undergoing separation proceedings that may result in a less than honorable discharge. The proceedings are expected to be completed by mid-July.
An Article 15 is less severe than a court-martial and is not a trial.
Local animal rights advocates and KFOX News, a television station in El Paso, Texas, have said Zimmerman is charged with animal cruelty for allegedly stomping on the neck of his dog, a golden retriever named Tinkerbelle, and killing her and breaking the hind leg of his other dog, Wrigley.
Debate rages over animal testing in NSW Miles Godfrey
July 3, 2009
Welfare groups are
calling for an urgent public debate on animal testing amid claims millions of
creatures are being killed or maimed every year in Australia in the name of science.
New figures published by the NSW
government's advisory body, the Animal Research Review Panel, show the number
of animals killed in NSW experiments rose by more than 1,000 to 8,813 during
2006-2007.
The NSW Department of Primary Industries
(DPI) said the figures were not surprising, and that compliance with
international standards meant the number of animals affected was unlikely to
fall.
The Australian Association for Humane
Research estimates more than six million animals are used in medical and
pharmaceutical trials in Australia annually, with at least 100,000 of those
animals dying.
"This is going on daily and we really
do need the community to be aware of what is being done in their name and have
a real public debate about the ethics of this industry," Glenys Oogjes,
executive director of the Animals Australia campaign group, said.
People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals (PETA) and the RSPCA have both demanded a halt to animal testing
despite claims by government officials there is no alternative.
"The European Union has a committee
designed just to ensure animal tests are being moved away from, and to validate
alternatives. Australia
has not changed," PETA spokesman Jason Barker said.
"We would like to see the number of
animals used in testing reduced, in fact, we want to see animals replaced with
other techniques such as cell, tissue and organic cultures and even human
volunteers, where appropriate," RSPCA spokeswoman Lisa Chalk said.
The DPI said it would not change its
policy to reduce animal deaths in the near future.
"If we are to have non-animal testing
for a certain product, that has to be approved on an international level and
that process takes a long time," DPI spokesman Ross Burton said.
However, NSW scientists are already
pioneering alternative methods.
Dr Laura Batmanian, from Sydney University's
Medicine Faculty, has developed a computer simulation to scrap tests on 250
rabbits a year.
"There is now solid evidence that not
only are non-animal technologies more humane but they also produce
scientifically valid data," NSW Greens MP and animal welfare spokeswoman
Lee Rhiannon said.
The Body Shop, which claims none of its
products are tested on animals, said there were alternatives to animal testing
for cosmetics.

A gruesome discovery at an Austin dumpster sparks outrage. July 05, 2009 6:33 AM
A dog was
found tied up in layers of black plastic bags. The woman who found the
dog believes she was tortured, killed, and dumped.
I wasn't expecting to find this, said Vicki McCauley.
McCauley and some co-workers found the dog near the dumpster outside
the Country Home Learning Center off Balcones Club Drive and North 183
two weeks ago.
They thought it was a child's body. They
pulled the blanket off it. They pulled the plastic off to realize it
was a dog, said McCauley.
McCauley took photos of the dog, since named Sweetie, to show to animal cruelty investigators.
Her paws you know were all bound up all tied up with a rope. The bag
was all tied up as well, said McCauley.
She doesn't know
how long Sweetie had been at the dumpster. By the time McCauley found
her there bugs were crawling around.
To me it looks like a Pit Bull that was abused, tortured, she said.
McCauley called Austins 311 for help. She was transferred to APDs animal cruelty detective.
The police officer said that he feels that this is just a decomposing
animal. I don't feel that way, said McCauley, When I got the plastic
off of the body and I looked at her it's like mmm-mmmm this is not
okay. It's just...to me that is not decomposing.
McCauley took it upon herself to unwrap the plastic bags. When she did,
she says it looked like Sweetie's throat had been slit. Her paws were
tied together with rope. McCauley believes someone burned Sweetie's
face and back.
On Friday night, frusterated that the
citys investigation hadnt turned up any suspects, McCauley joined
about a dozen animal activists at the dumpster where Sweetie was
abandoned.
Personally I want to know who did this and
why they did this and I want to seem them punished for it, said Ernest
Samudio.
The group laid flowers by the dumpster in Sweetie's honor.
I just wanted her to know that not everybody is bad and mean and the
horrible thing that happened to her was inexcusable, said Cindy
Marabito.
Armed with fliers, the group was ready to plaster the community with Sweeties story, hoping to find answers.
I really want to know who did this to this animal. I think it's wrong, said McCauley.
The Austin Police Department says its animal cruelty detective is
investigating. Animal cruelty specialists with the city are also
involved, but are still unsure whether Sweetie was abused and dumped or
if her owners dropped her off at the dumpster after she died of natural
causes.
PETA is offering a $2,500 reward for the person or people responsible.
A
Salinas, KS, woman, Teresa Grover, is mourning the loss of her sweet
little rat terrier, Bug, who was brutally killed over the weekend and
authorities want to find out who committed the cruel crime. On Sunday
morning, Teresa found the body of her little dog laying atop a roll of
TV cable, some bolts and the wrench that has been used to beat her to
death.
She was pretty sweet, she loved everybody, and she, everybody that
came in she knew they were here to see here, and play with her, Teresa
says.
She meant quite a bit to us. Thats why they were shocked to find
the dog dead in the backyard Sunday morning. I was just freaked out, I
was so scared, I couldnt believe anybody had done anything like that.
There was a big hole in her thigh that the wrench fit perfectly
into, her belly had been ripped, her back leg had been broke, I mean
the bone, it was a compound fracture, the bone was just ripped up and
out.
Bug, a family pet for more than two
years, was the reason that Teresa got into fostering dogs and the loss
of her baby has really hit her hard.
Id like to bring whoever, whatever to justice.
Police say that if a person is found responsible, they will face
animal cruelty charges. A vet who examined Bug but did not perform a
necropsy, believes that in his opinion the injuries were consistent to
animal to animal wounds. Teresas three other dogs werent harmed.
Although details are rather scant, if there were items left in the
yard that didnt belong to Teresa and the wrench fit into a wound, Im
not sure I see how an animal attacked and killed the little dog. One
way or another, this is a terribly sad story and if a human had a
hand in this, I hope they are caught and punished. Anyone who could
brutally kill an innocent little animal is a danger.
An
8-12-week-old mixed breed puppy is recovering today at the Buncombe
County Animal Shelter from wounds to its paws, legs, stomach and face
after two men dragged it by a leash on Sunday.
At least two calls were logged into the police, the first at 7:10
pm and the second about 25 minutes later reporting two men dragging a
puppy, its paws bloodied. At first, police couldnt locate the men but
the second caller, Troy Leeper, followed on his bike and was able to
lead the police to them.
Two Asheville men, Richard Darnell Brent, 49, whose address was
listed as the Buncombe County jail and James Lewis Drew, 58, have both
been charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals.
The puppy, who was treated for its
wounds, is expected to recover and didnt even belong to either of the
two men. For some unknown reason, the puppys owner had allowed Brent
to take the puppy temporarily.
It probably had never been trained to walk on a leash, Shelly
Moore, executive director of the Asheville Humane Society said. I just
dont understand why someone would do this. Its a 6-pound puppy. You
need to pick it up and carry it.
What the hell is wrong with people that they would drag a helpless
little puppy along concrete sidewalk until it was injured and bleeding
and then continue to drag it?? OMG!! Someone needs to tie a leash on
these brainless morons and drag them around! These idiots were dragging
this puppy for at least a half an hour. Thank goodness a good Samaritan
stepped in and called 911 and followed at least one of this asses until
he could point him out to the police. Looks like the idiots residence
is going to stay listed as the jail!
