EI's Book Recommendations August 13, 2005 8:52 AM

There are so many great books about the environment, and some of them just don't get the attention they deserve.  This is their opportunity to finally do so.  Have a book you'd love to recommend?  List it here.  Give us the title, the author, and a brief synonsis -- what it's about/why you loved it.

Let the world know.  This will be a great resource for birthdays and holidays, and for yourself when you're in the mood for some educational reading, but you're not sure what to pick up.

Swimming Lessons: Keeping Afloat in the Age of Technology August 13, 2005 9:00 AM

Title: Swimming Lessons: Keeping Afloat in the Age of Technology
Author: Dr. David Ehrenfeld
Star Rating: *****

This is a great collection of anecdotes ultimately investigating the environment and the impact of our technologically intensive lifestyle.  the book is broken into five components which progress the reader from an introduction to the problem all the way to what we can expect to see from the future.  ehrenfeld's collection of life stories aptly demonstrates how one can live with the land without being a frontiers man or the greatest outdoor enthusiast.  I read this book throughout my vacation, while waiting for planes and it attracts lots of attention with its quirky title.  A very easy and enjoyable read that had me laughing aloud many a time.

Language Older than Words August 13, 2005 9:07 AM

Title: Language Older than Words
Author: Derrick Jensen
Stars: *****

A long, sometimes tedious read, modern philospher Derrick Jensen looks to our lifestyle full of violence and greed to drawl parallels to the environmental destruction we all partake in.  Painstakingly honest and occasionally painful to read due to the emotional matter, Jensen leaves no stone unturned in his quest for understanding of his own life, fraught with abuse, and of our civilization.  As it's a whopping 399 pages of heavy matter, be sure to pick up only when you have a significant amount of time to dedicate.  It took me 4 days of solid summer reading to make it through.  It's hard to read a bit at a time, which is why I put it down the first time, but picked it up a year later with increased determination.  Jensen is out to make the reader think, proposing questions he won't answer for a hundred pages.  however, this style is hardly aggravating as he delves into so many tangents that it helps the reader obtain a broader perspective of the plight we've created for ourselves in this consumer centered civilization.

The Dynamic Great Lakes September 14, 2005 7:12 PM

The Dynamic Great Lakes is a book about environmental changes in the Great Lakes and how we might become part of the solution to things that should never happen.  Some have called the book empowering since it shows success stories where people have been able to make positive changes.  Amazon.com has a search inside feature.  There is also a website with more Great Lakes information: www.geocities.com/barbaraspring or just type The Dynamic Great Lakes into a search engine.  [ send green star]  [ accepted]
