Protect Idaho's Wolves August 01, 2006 12:00 PM

Once prevalent in the American West, millions of wolves were trapped, poisoned or shot to death in the first half of the last century. In fact, wolves were very nearly eradicated in the lower 48 states.

Shortly after the Endangered Species Act’s passage in 1973, the wolf was identified as endangered or threatened in the lower 48 states and declared a candidate for species recovery. By the mid-1990’s, conservationists achieved a remarkable accomplishment -- the now-historic reintroduction of gray wolves to Yellowstone National Park.

Fifteen wolves were initially reintroduced into Idaho. Since then, the number of wolves in the state has increased, and by December 2005 it had grown to 500-600 wolves. This includes 36 verified breeding pairs and 61 documented packs well distributed throughout Idaho, according to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Unfortunately, the gray wolf’s recovery in Idaho has not gone unopposed. In 2001, state legislators passed a resolution calling for the elimination of wolves “by any means necessary.”

Extremists in the state have continued their anti-wolf campaign, going so far as to launch an anti-wolf ballot measure in 2006 and telling the Los Angeles Times that "We will get rid of these wolves, one way or another."

In January 2006, the Bush Administration handed over wolf management to the state of Idaho.

Within a week, state officials announced plans to kill as many as 50 wolves in the state’s Upper Clearwater Basin -- 75% of the wolf population in one National Forest. Now Idaho has asked for permission to kill wolves in areas of Northern Idaho where they are still protected under the Endangered Species Act.

US Forest Service Wants to make it Easier to Kill Wolves and Other Carnivores August 01, 2006 12:47 PM

The U.S. Forest Service wants to make it easier to kill wolves and other carnivores in our wilderness areas. Take action now to stop them!

Action Alert

Keep our Wilderness Areas Safe for Wolves!

Dear Adriana,

How do you take the wild out of a wilderness area? Kill the carnivores. That’s what the U.S. Forest Service has in mind.

Tell
the U.S. Forest Service to keep our wilderness areas wild and withdraw
their proposal to make it easier to kill wolves and other carnivores.

The
Forest Service is proposing to make it easier to kill key animals in
places they were once safe -- and let an agency with a checkered
past take control over these operations.

They want to
use an array of poisons, traps and shooting -- including aerial gunning
-- to wipe out wolves and other carnivores in federally designated
wilderness areas.

Take
action now. Tell the U.S. Forest Service to withdraw this ill-advised
proposal. Submit your personalized comments before the August 7th
deadline!

Your comments will be most effective if they are personalized. Tell officials why it is important to you that they do not go forward with this harmful proposal.

And it's not just wolves -- bears, coyotes, cougars and other carnivores are at risk.

These
creatures play an important role in the ecological balance of our
wilderness areas. They are essential species that keep other wildlife
populations in check by preventing overpopulation and habitat damage.

The Forest Service proposal would upset the natural balance in the most remote and natural places we have left -- and Wildlife Services, the agency that would be put in charge, has a grim track record
In 2004 alone, Wildlife Services agents killed more than 37,000 animals
-- coyotes, wolves, foxes, and bobcats -- from the air.

Help stop this harmful proposal from becoming a reality! Submit your comments today.

The proposal allows for the use of the controversial pesticide sodium cyanide. Baited devices could be used to shoot the highly toxic gas into a wolf’s mouth, causing a horrible death.

Under the proposal, federal agents could also chase down and kill bears or other carnivores using planes, helicopters, and all-terrain vehicles -- invading areas once safe for these creatures with loud, intrusive machines.

Submit
your comments today. Tell the Forest Service to drop their proposal to
loosen restrictions on killing our wolves, bears and other carnivores.

Wilderness
areas were meant to be wild and free. According to the 1964 Wilderness
Act, these special places should be preserved in their natural
conditions with little or no human influence. But the Forest Service’s plan could fundamentally alter these largely untouched areas, allowing low-flying airplanes, trucks and all-terrain vehicles to hunt down populations of wolves, bears and other carnivores.

DEFENDERS OF WILDLIFE      Take Action to Save Our Birds

The pesticide carbofuran is highly toxic to birds. In fact, just one granule of carbofuran is enough to kill a songbird.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is expected to rule on the fate of this deadly pesticide this week. Your efforts could decide whether this toxic pesticide stays on the market or not.

Please fill out the form to send your email urging EPA official James Gulliford to protect birds, fish and mammals by removing carbofuran from the market.

We don’t have much time to get the word out about this important issue, so please urge everyone you know who cares about protecting our wildlife to take action, too.

THEY ARE LESS THEN 600 SHORT OF THEIR TARGET OF 20,000 SIGNATURES!

Use your buying power to tell the Canadian government to end the seal hunt.

The 2006 Canadian seal hunt has ended, but our work to stop this brutal hunt is far from over. During this year's hunt, more than 336,000 seals were slaughtered for their fur - most killed were just three months old or younger, and some of them were skinned while still conscious and able to feel pain.

You can stand with us to stop the largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals on the planet. Your greatest weapon is your wallet: Sign our pledge and tell the Canadian government that you won’t buy any Canadian seafood until the hunt is over for good. (You can find out how to spot Canadian seafood here.)

We'll deliver your pledge to Canada's government so the politicians will know you've joined our international "Protect Seals" team to end this awful hunt.

Stop the Namibian Seal Hunt
The second largest seal hunt in the world occurs in Namibia from July 1st through November 15th. This year the government has set the 2006 hunting quota at 85,000 pups; a level that combined with natural mortality could result in the annihilation of this year's entire seal pup population.

Despite declining numbers of pups born annually and seal populations that have not recovered from mass die-offs in 1994 and 2000, the quota increased from 50,850 pups in 1993 to 85,000 in 2006. The increase is motivated by monetary, rather than scientific, reasons.

Ontario delays further action on caribou

Tell the Ontario government that time is running out for woodland caribou!

The Ontario government is deciding on a strategy for the future of woodland caribou. All the while, it promotes industrial activities in critical caribou habitat and delays taking the necessary steps to protect this species.

Take action now! Urge Premier McGuinty to take immediate steps to protect the intact boreal forests that caribou rely upon to survive and thrive.

Protect Endangered Condors from Lead Poisoning

The California condor is one of the world's most endangered species, with just over 125 condors currently in the wild. Lead poisoning from ingesting lead ammunition in carcasses is a severe threat to California condors and also kills bald and golden eagles. Lead poisoning has caused nine confirmed condor deaths since 1997 and is implicated in the death or disappearance of at least 15 other condors in southern California alone. Scores more condors have required life-saving emergency blood treatment involving intrusive chemical therapy after ingesting lead.

Lead bullets are prevalent throughout condor territory, and there is overwhelming evidence that lead exposure comes from ammunition fragments in carcasses the condors feed upon. Condors and other scavenging birds such as eagles are extremely vulnerable to lead and will continue to die of lead poisoning until and unless state and federal agencies take action. Condor experts, toxicologists, and fish and game managers agree that without controlling the presence of lead bullets in condor habitat, the condor faces an extremely difficult road to recovery.

In December 2004, a coalition of conservation groups, Native Americans and hunters petitioned the California Fish and Game Commission to change hunting regulations to protect condors from lead poisoning, but the Commission refused to act. Non-toxic lead-free bullets are already available that perform as well as or better than lead bullets for hunting big game. At least a dozen non-lead shot types are approved by the Fish and Wildlife Service for waterfowl hunting and could be used for hunting upland birds and other game.

Dear friends,

Many people have said to me that they do not believe that Tesco would sell live turtles for food in China.

Here is a BBC video report, part of which shows the turtles in a Tesco store in China. Look at the larger turtles kept in the high level blue coloured tanks, then the smaller ones kept below. The turtles are kept in these brightly lit cramped conditions while they await their fate of being butchered alive. You can view the video HERE

This is the Tesco that is opening in the US as ' Fresh and Easy '.

If you have not already, please take the time to help us put a stop to this cruelty.

Sign the petition: Hands Off The Arctic! August 29, 2007 5:20 AM

Global warming is melting the Arctic at an alarming rate. This summer the Arctic ice cover was the smallest ever recorded. As a result, there really is a race on to grab up the oil, gas and other resources once protected by ice.

And the more oil and gas we burn, the faster the Arctic melts and the closer our planet comes to catastrophic climate change.
