Ella June 15, 2006 8:33 AM

10 years ago today one of the greatest jazz singers of all times went from us: Ella Fitzgerald.

Born April 25, 1918, she was active on stage for 60 years. From soulful interpretations of standards to aggressive scat and bop versions of jazz hymns like Flying home and How High the Moon, she was one of the most versatile and powerful singers of jazz history.

Lets keep her memory alive.

On April 6, 1923, "King Oliver's Creole Jazz band" boarded a train on Chicago's south side, traveled across Indiana's vast rural landscape, and arrived at Richmond's downtown station near the Starr Piano factory. Pulling into Starr valley, Joe Oliver and his band mates were a long way from Chicago and the only black people among hundreds of German workers in the secluded factory complex.
