Just imagine the progress we could make in tackling teen homelessness if every American did just one simple thing to help. That's the thought that launched the Do 1 Thing campaign, and why we're asking you to join us on February 14th.
Donate, take action, share our message. Every effort counts, so please choose one thing and do it! The difference we'll make together in the lives of street kids will be monumental!

Why We CareThanks to your generous contributions of time, money, and other means of support, Covenant House touches the lives of over 70,000 homeless and at-risk kids every year. But with 1,000,000 young people living on the streets across our country today, our work is far from over.

Our friends at Do 1 Thing recognize the magnitude of the problem, and the need to bring the face of homeless youth to national attention. Through a special partnership, Covenant House and Do 1 Thing hope to raise awareness about teen homelessness in America, and inspire others to do what they can to help.

Dear Covenant House Friend,

As you may have heard, I recently began serving as the new President of Covenant House. I am honored to step into this position at such a crucial time. Twenty years of advocating for kids has shown me that homeless kids need our help now more than ever. I know that together we can, and will, make a difference in the lives of kids living on the streets.

But we must start now…and we must do it in a big way… which is why I'm so pleased that the very first time I ask for your support, I do so knowing that every dollar you give will be matched by three more. That means that your gift of $50 will be worth $200!

More than one million of the world’s children are trafficked for labor or sexual exploitation each year. Last year, Covenant House served more than 70,000 homeless kids in 21 cities in North America, many of whom have been solicited on the streets or muscled into the sex trade.

What an incredible way to mark this new chapter in the history of Covenant House… and quadruple the impact your generosity will have on kids who need our help right this minute!

Recently, FBI and state law enforcement agencies broke up one of the largest child trafficking operations in the United States. The Bureau arrested more than 500 adults who now stand accused of selling children into sexual slavery.

More than one million of the world’s children are trafficked for labor or sexual exploitation each year. Last year, Covenant House served more than 70,000 homeless kids in 21 cities in North America, many of whom have been solicited on the streets or muscled into the sex trade.

America’s homeless kids need Covenant House more today than they ever have before. Yet at the same time, the current economic recession has really hurt charities like Covenant House, and our ability to protect these kids.

I know that I am taking over during challenging times. But despite this, you and I have a chance to do something extra special for these kids.

So please, make your matching gift today – and every single dollar you give will be matched by three more!

You have a chance to protect four more children … fill four more hearts … nourish four more tired and hungry souls. With this matching gift campaign, your gift has four times the power to save a life.

Sincerely,
Kevin Ryan
President

PS: Today, we’d also like to share a video clip from CNN featuring Joanna, whose incredible story was made possible because of friends like you. During our 3-to-1 matching gift campaign, you have the opportunity to quadruple your generosity and help more kids like Joanna. Donate Now.

Please reach out to your Congressional representatives!

A new bill was recently introduced that would direct President Obama to call a White House Conference on Children and Youth in 2010.

With over 3 million reports of abuse and neglect, which cost tax-payers $104 billion there is strong incentive to improve child welfare system.

Together, we must urge our representatives to vote for this key legislation!

Dear Covenant House Friend,

No child should ever have to fight for his life on the street. While our heart always aches for homeless kids, Mother's Day can be especially hard. That's because too many of the kids who pass through our doors have never experienced a mother's love. They've never enjoyed a mother's home cooked meals, heard her advice, or felt her warm embrace. They're wounded, and they need help. Kyle was one of those kids.

With your special Mother's Day gift, our kids will have a chance to experience unconditional love - perhaps for the first time in their lives.
Like so many of the kids we meet at Covenant House, Kyle never had a mother to tuck him in at night. When he arrived at Covenant House, homeless and alone, he had trouble thinking of himself as anything more than a kid who was born a "drug addicted baby." He certainly didn't believe that anyone would ever love him.
Callout

What Kyle really needed was a family to love and believe in him. When he came to Covenant House, we became his refuge, his sanctuary and his love. We immediately began working with Kyle toward a new future one filled with hope, not heartache.

Never afraid of hard work, Kyle earned his high school diploma, an accomplishment that filled him with pride. He says he couldn't have done it without his family at Covenant House, who restored his spirit when he needed it most.

Like Kyle, many of the kids who come to Covenant House have never known a mother's care. And without it, they feel scared, empty, and alone. But Covenant House is here to give kids the love they need, and to help them transcend the sadness and build the bridge to a better future filled with absolute, pure, and unconditional love.

This Mother's Day, help us nurture homeless kids. With your support, every kid who comes to Covenant House will get the food, clothing, shelter, care, and love they need to make a fresh start.

With great gratitude,

America’s streets are teeming with dangerous predators – brutal pimps, gangs and pornographers. These human traffickers buy and sell children, especially homeless kids, who only want someone to trust.

Covenant House knows all about the dangers these kids face, and we’re working harder than ever to protect them. But we need your help. We need to hear your voice. Please complete our special survey and tell us how you think we can best end human trafficking and teen homelessness.

Why We Care

Criminals who engage in human trafficking aren’t always what they seem. Their evil intentions are disguised by a warm, friendly and caring façade. But this is all just part of their game to deceive trusting kids with the promise of a place to stay, a good meal and a better life.

Like thousands of homeless and runaway kids looking for a second chance, young Michelle was lured in – and trapped – by a human trafficker. Instead of a new start, she found herself forced into a life of prostitution….

He's a musical prodigy. A self-taught genius. A one in a million. And he's a homeless kid.

All our kids are special — but Perry is the kind of kid who inspires you to look past today's hardships and see a brighter tomorrow.

Months ago Perry was living in a car, dreaming of simple things you and I take for granted — a hot meal... clean clothes. Now, his dreams are as big and bright as the heavens.

Will You Help Just 1 Kid?

You don’t have to save thousands of kids from the streets in order to make a difference. You can help Just 1 Kid and change a life forever.

Our new Just 1 Kid campaign asks you to do whatever you can to help one kid living on the streets. The campaign will culminate with our Candlelight Vigil on November 5th when Covenant House supporters gather to remember the thousands of homeless kids still living on our streets, and on November 7th in a National Day of Service.

Please join the Just 1 Kid campaign and take action in whatever way fits your talents, interests, and lifestyle. A group in New York has formed a team to run on behalf of Covenant House in the New York City Marathon. Follow their example and do whatever you can to help Just 1 Kid!

Help Publicize the Problem of Teen Homelessness

Covenant House kids need all the friends they can get! Please write a review to nominate Covenant House for the Youth Thrive Awards 2009 before September 30th. If we receive enough reviews from our dedicated supporters, the Thrive Awards will give us the publicity we need to better spread the word about youth homelessness. It takes less than 5 minutes to let others know that you believe Covenant House is the most important human rights movement for children in the Americas!

Dear Covenant House Friend,

It breaks my heart to think of the number of homeless kids with nowhere to go tonight – when even the world has forgotten them.

Every year, in the late Fall, we organize candlelight vigils to honor the memories of those young people who have died alone and anonymously on the streets of our cities and towns. But our candlelight vigils have another meaning, too – the candles lit to remember the lost are also a symbolic light to guide homeless kids to the open doors of Covenant House.

This year, we’re asking you to host a candlelight vigil in your community on November 5, 2009:

http://candlelight.covenanthouse.org/attend/contact.php

We’ll provide you with a how-to kit, including sample invitations and tips on how to organize your event. We’ll also schedule conference call check-ins to answer your questions and help you build a successful vigil. Please consider hosting an event today:

http://candlelight.covenanthouse.org/attend/contact.php

Just imagine the progress we could make in tackling teen homelessness if each person on this list hosted a candlelight vigil. Hundreds of candlelight vigils in communities across America will send a message to the homeless kids who live on the streets – you are not alone; you are loved.

Please consider hosting a vigil today – we’re trying to get 100 candlelight vigils on November 5, 2009, and right now we’ve got one. This begins with you.

Thank you for everything you do for the kids –

Sincerely,

Kevin ryan Kevin M. Ryan

PS – Watch this video right now – and then please, please consider hosting a vigil for these kids:

Deceived by promises of shelter and food, homeless kids are easy prey for human traffickers. Help stop these predators by supporting International Megan's Law! This new bill expands the protection of Megan’s Law, mandating reporting for convicted sex traffickers trying to travel internationally, and preventing those with a record of sex crimes against minors from entering the U.S.

You can make a real difference in the fight against the trafficking of innocent children. Show your support for International Megan’s Law by emailing your congressional representatives today!  [ send green star]  [ accepted]

Ana sat with a group of other Covenant House girls and couldn't believe the road she had walked to get there. An intelligent, hard working student, Ana fought back tears as she told her new friends about her dreams of continuing her education... and the horrible night that might have ended them.

When Ana's parents shut the door behind her, they left their daughter alone and abandoned in the world. She snuck into an office building and spent three nights sleeping in a cold stairwell...
nothing but a light jacket separated her from the cold concrete.
