This is a great idea, I am not sure if it is too late, I think if you were really motivated you could put something together, or just do an unofficial food collection for your local food bank without registering with this specific program:

If you can't get it together this year, there's lots of time to make it happen for next year!

I just went there and didn't see anything about it this time right away, however I am at the public library and am almost out of time for this session. If you could take a looksee, that would be great!
I would love to get something like this going.... especially with what's been going on with Hurricane Katrina... maybe, we can figure out a way to start now and encourage people to donate for local food banks as well as for the hurricane victims... and also blankets, coats, pet food....

I did a google search and there it was, maybe it was just that the old link doesn't work anymore, or maybe it was down while they updated for the upcoming season?!?!?
I think the basic idea is that your kids tick or treat for canned food and non-perishables instead of candy. They have an e-mail link to request a kit. I was thinking that your kids could trick or treat for candy and canned food... while your kids trick or treat you pull around a wagon or just throw the donations in the back of your car. You may even want to print out a flier and hand it out around to the neighborhoods you'll be trick or treating a week before hand. I am sending out an e-mail tonight to see if I can get a kit in time.
The e-mail address to ask about this through free the children is:

I really think that this could work well and would be a great idea!
Also, take a look at the other things they have going on there, it's all totally awsome stuff!
