Welcome Back Rhonda, it's great to see you here again.
I would like to apologize to everyone for not posting and being here lately, My hubby has been in the hospital a couple times as his diabetes is out of control; and I am trying to balance all of this with training, and now we are working on a Chili/Salsa Cookoff Fundraiser. I will try to be more diligent in my posts.....
I'm wondering if there are notepads, bumperstickers, tshirts or items for purchase? Happy to share with friends. Would love to purchase. Thanks. Rhonda

You can have a Therapy Service Dog that will assist all of you, however, it will probably "bond" with one main person. I do have a family that there are 2 autistic children; yet they have 1 dog. And yes, we can also train the dog as a hearing dog to alert to different sounds. If you go to my website http://www.palswithpawz.org/, you can see the different types of dogs there are. Right now I have from a 3 mo shih tzu to a 4 yr. old Golden Shepherd. If you fill out an application, I will discuss how we assist people "fundraise" and if you tell me what state you live in, I will explain the laws regarding Service/Therapy Dogs.
Do they have dogs that can help the hearing impaired?? My boyfriend is a VietNam vetern that has hearing loss. We were able to get him a phone that has an amplyier on it to where he can hear it ring and talk to people better. Yet, he is unable to hear the weather sirens when they go off, the door bell, or even if someone knocks at the door. He has me wake him because he is unable to hear the alarm clock. I know that he loves dogs and he could use the companionship of a dog. Yet, we have three indoor cats as well and at least one of those does not like dogs.
Then I would have the other question of can you have a sevice dog that is able to handle more then one person with a disabilty in the home? Myself and two children are on the Autism Sprectrum. My son that lives with his father seems happist when he is with the two dogs that they have as pets.
Guess what I am hoping for is a dog that can help my boyfriend with his hearing needs and then the others of us with the Autism that are in one home. We are on a fixed income and I am not sure that we could afford alot of animals and I have no idea what the city laws are on such things as well.
My daughter was bitten by a dog about three years ago and had 30+ stiches to her right cheek. She no longer feels confortable around the larger dogs and is on the Autism Spectrum. Are there small dogs that can do these sort of things as well?
Want to put my thanks out that there is a group like this to help people. I am very happy to be appart of a group like this. Also think that it is fantasic that you train these dogs that you resuce as well. Thanks, Heidi
Things have been really crazy on my end here, and I apologize for not keeping up with this group. I should have everything back to normal again soon. (My computer crashed). So if you have any questions, or things that are going on, please share with us.
Christine,
I cannot thank you enough and will feel forever in your debt. You have a wonderful heart and much knowledge and I will listen and do as you suggest. Thank-you so very much, from the bottom of my heart and soul. I will keep you in my meditations. Take good care.
Yours In Kindness and Compassion,
Lin
Lin,
You can rescue and train your own service dog; HOWEVER, just remember, that there are a lot of protocols that you need to follow. And, not every dog has the capabilities of becoming a service dog. I do use rescued dogs as a majority, but only 25% of those that originally tested as possible candidates, make it completely through the program. Luckily, we run additional programs, such as READING Pawz, that allows us to use these dogs that don't qualify as Service Dogs to benefit children who have trouble reading. I will send you an e-mail with our application. Our waiting list is 9-24 months, right now.
hey Christine, thanks for the info. i won't forget it if i ever get a service dog 5 years, by now it may be longer, from now. the timeline discourages me from applying for 1, plus i am low-income, & somewhere inside me believe there's a dog i can train to be my service dog & we wii rescue each other. but i will start putting in applications. thanks so much for getting back to me, i really appreciate it. is there any way for me to apply to get on your waiting list? i really believe in your philosophy & ways. if not, i understand so no worries, o.k.? i, too, look forward to a new friendship & great correspondence. take it easy. 8-) yours in kindness & compassion, Lin On Mon, Sep 1, 2008 at 9:22 AM, Care2 Groups: Rescued Dogs/Service Dogs/Therapy Dogs/Austism/Psychiatric Mailing List wrote: > *Welcome* 9:21 AM > > Welcome, Maria and Lin. Welcome, Maria and Lin. Please use this group to ask any questions that you have.
Lin, in regards to a Service Dog, if you get one that is already trained, they should have no problem with your cat. Now the same might not be true for your cat, but they can probably co-exist peacefully. Service Dogs are trained to assist their handler, and prior to you receiving a dog, they must go through vigorous Public Access Training, which includes (at least ours, and I am sure others do) take our dogs to places like zoo and local aquarium, in addition to the normal places, so that they are aclimated to all types of situations. So when you find an organization that you are interested in, ask them how they aclimate their dogs; I am sure you will get almost the same answer.
Maria, I am really glad you are here. You are a great friend. I look forward to our discussions.
hey,
my name is Lin & i am a 52y.o. F poet/writer living in seattle w/my 5 y.o. rescued M cat, Milo.
i have a great deal of interest in this group. i have had m.s. for 25+ years. when still able to work, i was a certified vet tech & write news for wa. state for bestfriends.org, best friends animal society is the country's largest no-kill companion animal shelter tho they're internationally known. wherever a disaster strikes in the world, they are there to rescue the animals. they'll also take in special needs animals from wherever. they were the group who were awarded michael vick's dogs, some not considered rehabilatatable. if you have on demand on your t.v., the show, DOGTOWN, the place where the shelter got it's start will be on the natgeo channel, (#273) @ either 9 or 10p.m. & the 1st story will be about the dogs they call the vicktory dogs.
i'm also interested in this group because i suddenly find myself looking for a dog i can train to be a service dog, or 1 already trained to be 1, who will ignore Milo..
my passions are:my writing/my passion for animals which includes a peaceful activism for animal rights & welfare, & my spiritual growth. of course, friends & family, as well. i love to read, watch movies, (often the same 1, over & over & love all music, even rap, as long as it's not violent.
nice to meet you all, i'm happy to be here.

I would like to welcome slv, mizuki z, katrina g, lucky n, ange b, mick c, pearl, maria, stephanie, carina, annalies, willy, georgeanne windy cory and bob to our group.
I am hoping that in this group we can help each other. We all might not be disabled, but we probably know someone who is. There are a lot of laws people don't know about. Scams to take advantage of us, and resources that one or all of us might not know about. So please post any questions or if you run across something that you never heard, or something new. It probably means that at least one of us doesn't know it either. Together we can make life a little easier for each other.
My husband and I have learned a lot more than we thought we knew before my accident. And I worked with the Special Olympics and volunteered a lot of time. It makes a huge difference when it's you or someone you love.
Anyway, just wanted to say hi and welcome to you all.....time to go work with my dogs. Three more weeks and Scotty will get to take his Service Dog Murray home for the first time. Normally, service dogs don't go home until the after complete training; but number 1 Scotty lives close so we will complete his training b going back an forth; and Number 2, since Scotty found out that he was getting Murray and we train with Scott once a week, he has only has 1 seizure in 2 months. It used to be daily. Talk to you all later....christine
Hi Christine, Yay Pals with Pawz. I look forward to being part of your group!
Awhile back I posted news about Murray and Scott and created a share in my sharebook today. I just wondered, how are they doing?
Thanks. Windy
Please everyone introduce yourself. I will start: My name is Christine and I trained my own service dog, and now train service dogs for people who might not otherwise get them. I use primarily rescued dogs, as there are way to many good dogs in the animal shelters. If you want to read more information about me you can go to www.PALSwithPawz.org.
