Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) paved the way for cloned animals to be sold for food. Now, with consumers outraged and food companies wrestling with the issue, the FDA is clearing the way for another controversial technology. The FDA has released draft guidelines outlining how it plans to regulate genetically engineered (GE) animals, including ones destined for the food supply.

Ask Bucknell University to End Cruel Experiments on Hamsters!

After being contacted by a concerned Bucknell University alumnus, PETA has learned that for 30 years, Prof. Owen Floody has been cutting holes into the skulls of female hamsters, damaging their brains, and observing the injuries' effects on the hamsters' sexual behavior. The animals are killed at the end of the experiments, and their brains are dissected. Floody even has his undergraduate students help torment animals in these experiments in his physiological psychology course.

PETA has already expressed its concerns to Bucknell and is now calling on you to help end these experiments. Please contact Bucknell University Dean of Arts & Sciences, Christopher Zappe. Politely ask him to end the experiments on hamsters and implement humane, non-animal teaching methods, which are readily available and used in physiological psychology courses at other universities.

DOMESTIC ANIMALS: Buck's Bill - The Pet Safety & Protection Act Take Action!

Help protect our pets from Class B dealers!

There are 15 Class B dealers left who round up dogs and cats and sell them to research facilities. It is time to take action to stop funneling dogs and cats—often times stolen family pets—into research facilities.

The Pet Safety and Protection Act, otherwise known as, "Buck's Bill," will prohibit the sale of "random source" dogs and cats for experimentation, preventing the theft of pets for research and the abusive treatment of these animals in the hands of Class B dealers. The House and Senate both recently accepted amendments to their respective Farm Bills to prevent stolen pets from being sold into research. While this is a great step forward, we need to make sure this legislation becomes law.

"Buck's Bill" is named in honor of Buck, a black hound dog seized in 2003 in Oklahoma from a Class B dealer. Buck, who had heartworm disease and other ailments, died months after his rescue, while in foster care.

Every year, thousands of monkeys are used in cruel and senseless experiments. They are poisoned to death in drug 'safety' tests and are deliberately brain-damaged during the study of neurological disorders. They have electrodes implanted in their heads, can be denied food and water, and are often made to perform frustrating, repetitive tasks.

Not only do these experiments cause immense suffering but they are also dangerously misleading for humans, because of the significant biological differences between humans and monkeys.

Please withdraw your objections to a ban on the use of great apes in experiments, and allow adoption of the proposal to revise Directive 86/609 EEC.

By repeatedly objecting to animal welfare improvements to be introduced through the revision of Directive 86/609/EEC, you are delaying implementation of new legislation that will affect millions of animals. Your persistence in blocking the new legislation directly contradicts the commitments to animal welfare that you make on your website.

The existing legislation is out of date, and affords no protection at all to hundreds of thousands of sentient animals currently used for experiments in the EU. Evidence suggests that enforcement of the Directive is poor, so that even weak minimum standards are not applied, and standards applied vary in different countries of the EU, thereby distorting the internal market. The Commission’s own decision-making processes – including scientific studies, expert groups, consultations, and an impact assessment – have all demonstrated that change is urgently needed and yet you have continued to block the proposal.

Your refusal to accept the wishes of EU citizens by supporting a ban on the use of great apes in experiments is especially regrettable because no great apes are currently used in experiments within in EU Member States have already prohibited their use and the majority of researchers believe such a ban is appropriate.

I have read the Save PMU Horses Petition to Wyeth, NAERIC, Media, and I hereby sign the petition:

Wyeth is a major pharmaceutical company that uses pregnant mare urine (PMU) to manufacture postmenopausal drugs including Premarin, Prempro and Premphase.

Stallions who no longer perform adequately, mares who can no longer produce foals, and an estimated 30,000 foals per year are unwanted by-products of this industry. Most of these PMU stallions, mares and foals are sold at auction, fattened and sent to slaughter.

NAERIC – the North American Equine Ranching Information Council - is an association which purports to represent farmers who collect PMU.

For years rescue organizations have been working diligently to save as many PMU horses as possible by buying them directly from the PMU farmers and placing them in long term homes.

It is our understanding that Wyeth recently changed its policy and has elected to no longer allow PMU farmers to sell their horses to rescue organizations. We also understand that NAERIC has elected to reduce or eliminate subsidies which were previously available to rescue or placement organizations.

We believe that implementation of these new policies will result in PMU horses being sent to slaughter when they might otherwise have been saved.

This is unacceptable.

By submission of this petition, we demand that Wyeth and NAERIC not establish any further policies or enforce any current policies which would:

1. Interfere with or obstruct PMU farmers or transporters of PMU horses from dealing with rescue or placement organizations.

2. Prevent PMU farmers from giving or selling PMU horses to rescue or placement organizations.

3. Result in the termination or reduction of subsidies which are or may become available to rescue or placement organizations for PMU horses, including purchase and transportation subsidies.

PMU Horses Lose Again To Wyeth Pharmaceuticals

Wyeth Pharmaceuticals
is a multi-billion dollar GLOBAL company which manufactures postmenopausal drugs by the names of Premarin and Prempro. These drugs are made with the urine from pregnant mares (PMU).
In PMU ranches, mares are kept in a state of perpetual pregnancy in order to collect their urine. Foals are an unwanted by-product of this industry.

It is estimated that, in addition to the mares and stallions who have outlived their usefulness, around 30,000 foals are sent to auction every year which, in most cases, is a death sentence.
